Garage Sale Sterling

Stopped by a garage sale and saw a large jewelry stand. Lots of rings, pendants, and earrings. A quarter of it was marked as sterling on the little bags they were in. 1/3 of it all was stamped 925 or sterling the rest just whatever pot metal etc.

Just was grabbing anything that looked like it was properly marked as silver. Some unpriced some priced as probably reasonable for silver jewelry. Picked through it all even with $10 for a ring or $3 for earrings; prices that were on the edge if there was going to be any margin judging from the weight in grams. I plopped it all down at the ladies at their checkout table and said I was looking for a deal on the lot and I'm going to grab my magnet to check a few things.

There was one ring that was marked 925 on the inside but it was suspiciously shiny like it was lacquered and sure enough that was the one item that the magnet picked up. I went and put that back and the ladies had totaled the prices on the bags at $69 and told the head lady I said I was looking for a deal.

In my head I was thinking hmm I'd offer $40 or $45 and id still might be behind with scrap price and silver dropping. The Lady shot back $25 for the lot. I handed it over nice and slow and casually perused the free bin as I walked away. Found a tie bar marked sterling at the bottom to add to the bag they gave me.

Wished them a wonderful day and left.

Deals are out there this was my first real big silver find.

Jupiter Flute

Found this last Thursday at Value Village. Random zippered box on a shelf... Probably the 20th flute I've looked at in 8 months across the 10 stores I frequent... finally hit!

Jupiter model JFL-611R - II.

$30 CAD with a spend $40, $15 off coupon (Also grabbed a student quality clarinet for $30 more).

Felt greedy for a second, because after researching I realized it's only the head that's silver and then had a tinge of disappointment... but even still, 77g is nothing to sneeze at.

I'll take it to a music shop tomorrow, a bit concerned that there's a few dents in the head piece, and the box has some broken separator walls. Seem to be selling on ebay for about $400 US / $500 CAD, so obviously worth more as an instrument, hopefully I can move it before school.

Silver Plate and Bowls

Could someone please tell me if these are worth anything and where best to sell them?

Need some help on this one.

I know community makes silver plated items. Did they do a dirty trick and name the company “community sterling” and the item is silver plated?

The stamp does say sterling….

….So is it sterling silver?

Wife gave me a box of stuff to take to goodwill.

$163 worth of metal almost got dumped at goodwill. Head joint is sterling. Rest seems to be plated.

Old friends reunited

Two weeks ago, I posted a French-stamped perfume bottle from the first part of the 20th C which I found at the thrift store. Went back this weekend, and there was another. The pair are now newly reunited! Each one has a French-stamped silver cap with nice decoration and French stamped silver neck. Total silver weight is about 45 grams. Looking closely at the wings, rather than stamped decoration, these are carved with each varying slightly. I'm unfamiliar with heraldic crests, so feeding the pics and a few minor prompts to AI, the digital system explained the imagery. I find AI-driven antique identification to be only so-so but I provide parts of the AI-generated explanation as it might be of interest to some. So--- AI generated material follows:

The structure resembling a brick crow's nest is actually a mural crown (or mural coronet).

  • Design: It features a ring stylized to look like a defensive masonry wall complete with battlements and towers.
  • Meaning: Originating from ancient Roman military decorations awarded to the first soldier to scale an enemy town's wall, it symbolizes civic honor, defense, fortitude, or a connection to a specific township or governed estate.

Emerging from the mural crown is a demi-eagle (the upper half of an eagle) depicted in a "rising" posture with its wings outstretched.

  • Meaning: The eagle is the king of the skies, traditionally representing magnanimity, courage, high ambition, and sharp vigilance. In this context, "rising" out of a fortress or crown underscores a triumph or elevated nobility.

·         The ribbon bearing the motto "TRUTH" directly contextualizes the family values. Mottos in heraldry were frequently chosen to express a core principle, a war cry, or a play on the family's surname. In English or Anglo-Norman heraldry, a motto written directly in English (like "Truth") is very common for British or Irish families.

·         The small braided segment beneath the crown—which looks like a rope—is a torse (or wreath). This represents a twisted skein of silk and cloth that traditionally anchored the crest mantle to the knight's helmet.

Chistofle tray

Found in an antique store. I've been looking for a lovely breakfast tray for Sunday mornings and I'm so happy with this find. Based on a Google of the stamps it appears to Christofle Silver-plated between 1935-1983, and the shop owner guessed it's 1950s. Any info anyone can share on the brand or tray would be appreciated!

And also tips on cleaning it, i've got silver polish for some picture frames but I'm worried as it is plated I might damage it.

Pawn shop find from 2018

Purchased the silver bar in 2018 from a pawnshop in Austin, Texas not really sure where it might’ve came from if it’s collectible or not, and I don’t really know which community to post this on to figure out more information about it hoping that somebody might have seen one before, but it is an odd shape. It has a company name on it the purity, etc., on the side in the photo the side that it’s currently resting on is mirror polished, and has the company name on it so that’s why it’s not in this photo. Hopefully somebody can give me some kind of information if possible about it or if they have ever seen one before I would be very grateful.

Should I melt it ?(50 grams)

Hi! I got this in a flea market for 8 bucks. It dates back to 1902. I can’t really figure what it is? I’m assuming it’s a letter opener but it doesn’t even look much like one.

Anyway, it’s not particularly pretty so I’m thinking about melting it.

What do the members of r/SilverFinds think?
