Old friends reunited

Two weeks ago, I posted a French-stamped perfume bottle from the first part of the 20th C which I found at the thrift store. Went back this weekend, and there was another. The pair are now newly reunited! Each one has a French-stamped silver cap with nice decoration and French stamped silver neck. Total silver weight is about 45 grams. Looking closely at the wings, rather than stamped decoration, these are carved with each varying slightly. I'm unfamiliar with heraldic crests, so feeding the pics and a few minor prompts to AI, the digital system explained the imagery. I find AI-driven antique identification to be only so-so but I provide parts of the AI-generated explanation as it might be of interest to some. So--- AI generated material follows:

The structure resembling a brick crow's nest is actually a mural crown (or mural coronet).

  • Design: It features a ring stylized to look like a defensive masonry wall complete with battlements and towers.
  • Meaning: Originating from ancient Roman military decorations awarded to the first soldier to scale an enemy town's wall, it symbolizes civic honor, defense, fortitude, or a connection to a specific township or governed estate.

Emerging from the mural crown is a demi-eagle (the upper half of an eagle) depicted in a "rising" posture with its wings outstretched.

  • Meaning: The eagle is the king of the skies, traditionally representing magnanimity, courage, high ambition, and sharp vigilance. In this context, "rising" out of a fortress or crown underscores a triumph or elevated nobility.

·         The ribbon bearing the motto "TRUTH" directly contextualizes the family values. Mottos in heraldry were frequently chosen to express a core principle, a war cry, or a play on the family's surname. In English or Anglo-Norman heraldry, a motto written directly in English (like "Truth") is very common for British or Irish families.

·         The small braided segment beneath the crown—which looks like a rope—is a torse (or wreath). This represents a twisted skein of silk and cloth that traditionally anchored the crest mantle to the knight's helmet.

The area of the Phlegraean Fields has been provoking regular earthquakes for almost a year now. Last night the stronger one. Is it something to worry about?

I live close enough to the area of the volcano so it's normal to feel a bit worried. This area usually does not have that many earthquakes of this magnitude so regularly. For the past year there's been soooo many earthquakes and bradyseism has been very active too.

I was looking for a gift coffee mug for my boss

Shit post, in a manner of speaking, as that is likely a chamber pot.

The weather really broke in my favor!

I found some time to zero the 44s. One is a Ruger Red Hawk (5.5") with Burris 2x. The other is a S&W 629 (5") with ultra dot on top. I zeroed the Ruger to Underwood 300gr xtp and the smith to Federal standard 240gr soft point. In this area we have seen high temps, smokey air and humidity but all that cleared out Sunday and I was happy to sit at the bench and walk the shots in to the targets at 50yds.

I Am Eighteen: Alice Cooper's hit 45 from 1971.

Alice Cooper is always a famous musician and is now also a DJ for a fun radio show where he can be his own worst enemy and my best entertainment while I'm driving home. My favorite shows of his are when he includes anecdotes from his early years as a performer and musician. So, Uncle Alice, if your listening, play Eighteen for your next Friday show. I catch that one reliably out of... I think it is 98.5 from Hanover, PA. - I Am 18 (+ a bunch!)

Small pizza holder? No! It is a drink coaster!

Webster and Co cut glass and sterling coasters. The stamp is very small but clean. Based on scrolling, these are likely made 1930s-40s. Now I can protect cheap ikea furniture from Miller High Life using fancy coasters!

I let this one go...

Pearl Harbor shocked Americans and the country pivoted to war. This song may stir different reactions today but in the aftermath of Japan's attack it was viewed as patriotic. You can find a recording on YouTube if you are interested in hear it.

Happy 250th, USA

The bicentennial was celebrated across the 1970s in the US. This year is the 250th! We moved forward 50years, but the decorations seem to work pretty nicely!

Midnight somewhere.

Very good condition set of postwar production popular jazz and blues numbers performed by British musicians. Spooky takes a holiday may be better know as Satan Takes a Holiday... I guess somewhere in sales they didn't want to offend. Love the cover art! Those lories are going to be difficult to locate in Piccadilly today!

Bailey Guthrie, 7&3/8. I love a nicely fit hat.

Can't wait to watch the music show at the county fair this fall wearing my new Bailey western hat. It is made using shantung. Probably not as fashion forward as some, this classic design is light and easy to wear. If there was one thing I could change, I would add decorative ventilation in place of the minimalist three dots.

Happy 44+ a few birthday to me!

I purchased the S&W629 (5") in the fall. Based on q&a on here I picked the Ultradot red dot and this winter had it installed by a local gunsmith. Today I take it to zero at an indoor range with 44specials. Once I get it ok, I will later on take both to the outdoor range to set up at 50yds with Underwoods nice hunting ammo. I will also get out it's friend, the Ruger Redhawk. And not shown, there should be time for some easy shooting 38s as well. It is my birthday so let's burn some lead!

RVG thoughts?

American Recording Society "Giants of Jazz" and "Woody Herman". These two belong to a series from the 1950s that was sold as a subscription. I find them here and there on thrift shop shelves. A subset of the overall sport RVG and if in good condition always play well and are enjoyable. I have not played the two I purchased today but I have good experience from prior.
