Anyone ever have a co-worker act like a 2nd boss?

A coworker who is not a manager/supervisor/director on paper or title but acted in verbiage or attitude to you in the office environment or communications. Or would make statements to your boss about something you didn't do or exaggerated the extent of something. Is this typical with the state?

Do we get any discounts for being state employees?

Ya know, like how people get veteran or first responder discounts? Anything for us measly public servants? Im curious but my gut tells me no 😅

Did the RTO/WFH situation stop any of you from voting for Abbott?

I am curious if state employees who would have otherwise voted for Abbott are voting Gina due to the RTO bullshit.

TWDB Hiring Timeline!!

I was interviewed on 3rd week of April, was contacted to provide 3 references 2 days later-on and my references were contacted by 28th April. I followed-up with HR on 6th May and got response on the same day stating that the hiring process is in final stages. And after that, a complete silence till now. What should I expect? Should I move on or is it normal?? How long does it take to hear back??

what do you have to tell your manager vs HR when you give notice?

I work for the state already and my particular office has become incredibly toxic to the point where an hr investigation is being conducted against all of my supervisors. I am pretty sure 1 of them is not coming back as they have been gone since April 30th…

It’s created a very uncomfortable setting to work in, multiple people are trying to leave and the remaining supervisor is the one who created the hostile work environment in the first place. She has threatened people that she isn’t afraid to get people fired, told all of us in a meeting that if we make any mistakes we are threatening her career and livelihood, told us our other supervisors call us liars and she cusses and belittles us. I have told the hr investigators all of this (her telling us that if we make a mistake we will be jeopardizing her livelihood and career happened yesterday and my meeting with HR was Thursday so they don’t know she said that) but she remains while the other 2 have been gone the entire month.

Understandably, I’ve been trying to find another job and have found one at another state agency. Normally, I would give two weeks notice because that is the proper thing to do, but with the way my supervisor has treated us and threatened us, I don’t feel she deserves my two weeks. New job said I can start May 26 or June 1. I want to leave asap.

When I give my notice, can I tell HR that I am transferring to another state agency, when and where so they can handle the leave etc? Do I have to tell my direct supervisor where I am transferring to? Will she ever see paperwork that states I am transferring to such and such other agency?
I am not sure who has to sign off on the paperwork when an employee transfers to another agency but I don’t feel like my supervisor needs to know any more personal information other than I am no longer going to be working for her and when I plan on leaving. I am honestly prepared that she wouldn’t accept two weeks notice if I gave it the way she has been talking to us and may just tell me to leave.

Thanks

Just started and I’m miserable

So far the pay is low, the benefits don’t seem that competitive and actually lose you potential retirement income if you don’t stay. I was told I’d have flexible time to come in because our division is RTO and they took that away and are making me come in at peak traffic times so my commute is 45-1 hour each way. I’m not getting enough sleep because I have to be up so early to accommodate their work start, I’m missing work outs, and have stopped hanging out after work because I’m always exhausted and have to be in bed by 9 or 10 or I can’t wake up early enough so now my work life balance is shit.

Is working for the state even worth it anymore for new employees? People made it sound like getting in was this big deal, but from what I can tell it’s a low pay job with bad work life balance inside a rigid structure that doesn’t care about your mental or physical health and there’s literally nothing to do to distract you during the day but sit at your computer and wiggle your mouse so they don’t think you’re “away” even though they’ve given you no assignments.

This job market is terrible and I might not be able to keep this one for long because of how badly it’s tanking my mental health.

Negotiate pay

A job I’ve been wanting has opened up with TVC. I’m currently with HHS but the job is about 1200 less…. Is there room to negotiate or has anyone negotiated before?

Is Texas Workforce WIOA program still available in Houston/cypress Texas?

Here recently, my husband has been trying to get in contact with Texas Workforce to speak to a WIOA Specialist to get a training solar trip for CDL school to get his CDL. Record the basic Texas Workforce line and ask if they provide financial assistance in getting a CDL but the caller that they no longer do that. But I hearing from others that they went through the Texas Workforce in order to get their CDL. So I’m always confused as to why when we call and ask about financial assistance they always tell us they no longer do it. So I decided to look it up on Google and it stated that the main line may not know information and to personally speak to a WIOA career specialist because they have that information. So my husband went in person and they gave him an external number to call and ask about training scholarships. Now the thing is they’re not answering the phone. I’m wondering, has anyone experience these setback when trying to get financial assistance towards getting their CDL out here in Houston/Cypress Texas?

Parental Leave

If you left after parental leave, how long did you stay? Before you put your notice in? I am still so burnt out and depressed even with the time off I’ve had. I am dreading going back in a couple of weeks…

Free Wills?

Don’t state of Texas employees get assistance in writing a will? If so, can someone point me in the right direction. I saw nothing on ERS. TIA

Update: I called ERS no will help. I called EAP (employee assistance) and after answering a zillion questions and talking to 3 different ppl they said they could find me a discount attorney. Texas Legal monthly fee plan seems like the best bet.

Should I move on?

I interviewed 3 weeks ago and sent a thank you/follow up a week later. I got a response that an update was coming shortly. It’s now been two weeks since that email without any news. My status on Capps still shows under consideration and the posting is ongoing. Now I read somewhere that after selection they won’t communicate with the other candidates until the chosen candidate has started the job. Can anyone confirm?

Ok. I may harp on this return to the office situation, but what I’d like to know is how many state employees in Texas go to an office everyday and do not interact with anyone except via phone or Teams.

List your agency (if you want). I find it very interesting that Texas State Agencies are putting their employees on the road for the sake of principal when gas prices are sky high, all of your interactions can be done from the comfort of your home and it’s the easiest way to give those that do not have public interaction a slight raise without giving them money. What I am seeing is that state agency leaders are utilizing 1985 standards. The roads are too crowded for emergency vehicles and if you don’t have to be on the road, you shouldn’t be. Where are our state representatives fighting for Texas and making our carbon footprint smaller.

Last, I am seeing that some managers are using it for punishment as well. Someone step up and tell Abbott this doesn’t make sense.

job offer and surgery already scheduled

I currently work for a state agency already. I have a partial thyroidectomy scheduled for August 5th. I have already been approved to have off August 5-14th at my current job.

HOWEVER, I have interviewed and been given an offer at another agency and I am not sure how I should handle my surgery now. This new job would allow hybrid work schedule, they said I could come into the office as much or as little as I want as long as I work 40 hours a week. (Their office is an hour away from where I live).

What would you do?

  1. My 150 hours of leave will go with me as im transferring from one agency to another without a break in service.
  2. should I let them know I have a surgery scheduled August 5th and would need Aug 5-7th off and could perhaps work from home August 10-14th? If they say that’s fine, great. But prepare for them rescinding the offer due to the surgery.
  3. Or should I just reschedule this surgery for later on down the road since my biopsy was benign and my surgeon is considering it “elective”? I know this nodule will continue to grow (it’s 5 cm right now) so I would prob need surgery eventually but it could possibly wait 6 more months or maybe a year.

My surgeon said most people take off 1-2 weeks for the surgery. I have no idea if I would be able to do my job very quickly after my surgery or if I truly need to be off 5-10+ days from work because this is a mostly admin role.

Thanks

When do I put in my notice?

I am transferring to a different department, but within the same agency. I start my new position on June 1st ,and I’m trying to figure out if I should give a full two weeks this Friday or wait until sometime next week? Also, if my last day is Friday May 29th, would I have a break in service over the weekend?

SWI

I finally applied to Statewide Intake, and they've reached out to set up the in-basket and a possible interview if I do well on my in-basket. Does anyone here work there? How is work-life balance? Micromanaging? Are calls back-to-back? I currently work for DFPS in COS, and I don't want to jump from the frying pan into the fire.

TxDOT

My husband applied for a job with TxDOT. How long does it normally take to hear back from someone? Once hired is there room for growth?
He is wanting to get his CDL at someone point, do they help with that?
