A hypothetical (somewhat) scenario:
An elderly patient begins voiding large amounts of blood when they use the bathroom. They are in the mid to moderate stages of dementia, and very secretive and paranoid about sharing anything around their health with their family. The dementia has caused perceptual, disruptions, and the patient believes that the blood in the toilet is her “special ability” to make colorful urine, and a special trick that she can do.
This belief causes her to brag to her family about the pretty “tinkle” in the toilet. When she does, her adult children immediately realize that there’s a problem, and ask her if she’s talked to the doctor about it. She insists that the reason that she is putting all that lovely color into the toilet is due to being special, and accuses the family members of being jealous.
She will not listen to their requests that she call her doctor, and discuss it with him, and gets angry when they insist that she needs to be evaluated.
The adult children have attempted through multiple avenues to get this information to their mother’s PCP. They have been blocked at every avenue, have called the patient safety line and left a message, have submitted an online form for the patient safety portal, have called the office and been blocked (by people who clearly don’t understand HIPAA), and so the blood in the urine continues, the patient ends up with pain and is eventually evaluated and diagnosed with Stage 3 bladder cancer.
Wouldn’t the system have some liability for refusing to listen to family members’ concerns early enough to treat it without as many complications? (especially if there’s lots of documentation that attempts were made to get the information to her provider,…)
Any staff nurses have to report for jury duty? How did it work?
I got a summons to call the night before a night shift. So call after 5pm Monday for a Tuesday morning report. I’m scheduled to work that Tuesday 7pm night shift.
This was just delivered to my room (while I was in the bathroom). Guess they are out of hummus/pretzel platters, English muffins and string cheese? At least they didn’t skimp me on the Cherry Bubblys today. 🫠
I just learned of the PSDA, and I’m wondering how UPMC gets away with not giving us designated sick time? Appreciate if anyone knows!
Me and my girlfriend were in the ER on 5/05/2026 and we’ve been calling patient relations multiple times a day. They lost my PayPal debit card and my BP meds. It was a large amount of belongings to just go “poof”. They made sure to give back all the electronics that could be tracked basically. But, the amount of stuff missing is probably equal too of not more than the electronics.
They even lost an electric blanket that had the chord plugged in to it….and only got the chord back.
If anyone could point me in the right direction or actually works there and can help me as well I is greatly appreciate it.
We also have Magee patient relations doing Mckeesporta job and they or ably sick of hearing from us. Should we make a police report? Or what?
hi! i had a job interview for food services this week at upmc and they said they’d be calling the people who are moving on with the interview process at the end of this week, it’s friday and i was just wondering if they don’t call today if they would possibly call on a saturday? i just really want this job opportunity…
What has happened with this health system? It's officially broken. No replies to My UPMC messages. No appointments available. Docs leaving left and right. Don't even get me started on the disaster that used to be the Midlife Health Center.
Thanks for your time to let me vent. I'm so frustrated.
Can anyone confirm that MMJ cards are accepted by the SON? Along with the card, I have a letter from my psych provider confirming the management of this medication along with my diagnosis that qualifies me for the program. I’ve heard mixed things and would like to confirm for peace of mind.
does anyone know if you can work at UPMC as a nurse and have a med card
I had a procedure in March of this year that I had scheduled last summer (they were scheduling that far out.). In January of this year, I received a call from the office that the provider was no longer doing the procedure that day at my selected location, but could do it at another. If I didn’t want to go to that location I would have to reschedule which could take months. So I kept the procedure on the same day but now in a new location. Fast-forward and I just got the bill and it was outrageous. I called my insurance company and they explained to me that the location that I had the procedure was way more expensive than the original location (hospital vs surgery center.). I knew that certain labs for when you got your blood work were more expensive than others, but had no idea about facilities. Do I have any type of recourse for not being told that the change location would increase my cost. It seems unethical, but not surprising. I’m guessing the answer is no, but wanted to see if anyone had a suggestion.
I start a new position at presby soon and the 2nd Ave lot seems like the best bang for buck. Would anyone know roughly how long it takes the shuttle to get to get from the lot to presby? Shifts would be 7-7
Thanks!
If you miss the scheduled shift before/after a paid holiday, I understand you won’t be paid for that day of the holiday. Will they take from your PTO bank to cover 8 hours for the day of the holiday or will they put in unpaid time off instead? Thank you!
