Where in Himachal can I find an Auroville or Kochi-like relaxed vibe?

Hey guys,

I usually spend my birthdays down South in places like Auroville or Fort Kochi because I love the relaxed vibe, great hostel crowd, and creative/conscious community events.

This year, I want to experience Himachal but with that exact same energy. I’m looking for something exclusive and non-commercialized, but still reachable. A place with great boutique hostels, good indie crowds, and events where you can actually have meaningful conversations and connect with new people.

Any specific villages, properties, or hidden pockets you guys would recommend for a birthday week? Appreciate the leads!

How to search for affordable homestay

Hi guys.

How do you search for cheap/affordable homestays. People who stay for atleast 15 days or a month.

I prefer single room homestay with kitchen. Not a hostel. I like cooking my own food.

For the past 2 year I have been getting rooms via airbnb. But recently the prices have been doubled up, dont know. What kind of inflation is this.

I believe 15-20k should be a decent charge for a single room with attached kitchen.

So, I need some tips on finding cheap monthly homestays. It's not location-specific, so generic advice would be great.

Mountains, 5G, and Absolute Peace: My 2-Week Pahalgam Workcation [OC]

I recently wrapped up a two-week "work from mountains" stint in Pahalgam. If you are planning something similar, here is the lowdown on how it went and what to look out for:

🏨 Accommodation & Views

  • My Setup: I stayed at a hotel with stunning mountain views for ₹2,000/day—worth every single rupee (without meals)
  • The Budget Reality: You can easily find budget stays in Pahalgam and Laripora for around ₹1,000/day, but you will likely sacrifice the view.
  • Pro-Tip: If you are booking a long-term workation online, double-check and verify the room view with the property before paying.

🍛 Food Options

  • The Choice: The hotel offered a 3-meal-a-day package for ₹4,500, but I opted out and decided to eat from outside.
  • The Verdict: Eating at local restaurants and nearby dhabas is the way to go. It gives you way more variety, and flexibility. Food at dhabas were cheap but not hygenic like local Restaurants. I was able to find few hygenic dhabas and I balanced the food eating from both Dhabas and Restaurants. My food expense per day was ~600.

📶 Connectivity & Internet

  • Hotel Wi-Fi: Decent and stable enough, clocking in at around 30 Mbps for both uploads and downloads.
  • The Lifesaver: Airtel 5G was the real MVP of the trip. It was incredibly reliable and regularly blasted speeds over 200 Mbps, making video calls and heavy lifting a breeze.

Can you please suggest some potential places to visit in August

Hey Folks,

This reddit is a god send, I was thinking of my first workation since past one month and somehow this reddit came as a suggestion.

I don't have any constraints on timelines etc. Can you please suggest some places based on your knowledge.

Few constraints which I have are:

* needs to not over-crowded with stable connectivity

* Don't have too much risk of landslides

Would be really grateful for any suggestions you folks can provide.

Where to go in Himalayas this July?

Reaching Delhi this weekend but nothing planned next. I'm planning for a quiet solo workation and my only prerequisite is stable WiFi and power backup. So remote areas are out of options, as I checked out most of the hotel reviews in these places. Even Mussoorie, Naggar, Dalhousi hotels have wifi outages. Remaining are Manali, Rishikesh, Dehradun are just cities or towns. I want some mountain views too. Some place that won't have to be reached by tough roads like Shoja or someplace that can be cut off due to landslides (even for Manali, we got caught up in a 8-hr traffic due to one landslide near Mandi last year). I can't go to North-East as I've booked flight till Delhi and from there going to NE will be out of my budget. I will restrict myself somewhere within HP, UK, Leh, PB etc. Please suggest, TIA.

Workation recommendations needed (Tried and tested only)

Hi All,
I am 29F and on my notice period, need a workation recommendation for July (10-20 days) with a decent wifi connection, weather and good view.
I haven’t done a workation before this, so please share your experiences and things to keep in mind.
I am not sure what budget usually suffices, so, any form of leads/help is appreciated! Since I am new to this, I’d be happy to include company.

I am from Delhi and am open to traveling far if the place is worth it.

Is anyone working in US Shift (6:30PM - 3:00AM) need some insights

Hey, I'm thinking about my first workation, preferably in the hills! Has anyone here with odd working hours tried it? I've got a few questions:

  1. Would staying in a hostel be an issue if I work late at night? Are there common areas where I can actually get some work done without disturbing others sleep
  2. How's the internet connectivity usually? My job needs me to be online constantly.
  3. I only have 10 leaves a year and no public holidays, so how should I plan my travel in and out?

Workation from a remote village in Sikkim

Enjoyed a beautiful stay at a remote village called Lingmoh, located in South Sikkim right between lush green mountains. This is the only homestay in this village, and they offer a great stay with home-cooked food and more than decent, stable internet.

The view from the balcony is just majestic, and an evening stroll around here would make everyone's mood better. Every view is postcard-worthy.

Workation in Pulga & Kasol ( III )

So, we stayed 3 days in Pulga and then moved back to Kasol for next 3 days.

It was a really great experience, especially the slow and peaceful life in Pulga.

Kasol, as always, was crowded especially over the weekends.

The weather was changing a lot, in the morning it was bright sun till noon and then suddenly it starts to rain, not heavy though.

The road from Manikaran till Pulga had some rough and broken patches in it, but it was a joyous bike ride.

I am looking to relocate to Himachal Pradesh, need suggestions on stay

Hi everyone,

I’m considering relocating to Himachal Pradesh for a couple of months and working remotely from there. The main reason is to take a break from city life, experience the mountains, and spend some time in a calmer, more scenic environment.

I’m from Bangalore, and since I’d be living there alone, I have a few concerns regarding safety, internet reliability for WFH, and whether there are any challenges one might face while settling in for a couple of months.

For those who have done something similar, what should I look for when choosing a place to stay? Are there any towns or areas you’d particularly recommend (or avoid) for someone working remotely?

Also, if there are any people from Bangalore/Karnataka currently living in Himachal or who’ve spent an extended period there, I’d love to hear about your experience.

Any sort of advice, tips, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Just back from A Solo workcation at Pahalgam for 2 weeks! [OC]

I did a work from mountains from Pahalgam for two weeks,

  • Accommodation & Views: I stayed at a hotel with an incredible mountain view. It cost ₹2,000 per day, but it was absolutely worth it. While there are plenty of budget hotels available in Pahalgam and Laripora for around ₹1,000 per day, most of them do not offer a clear view of the mountains. If you are planning a long-term workation, be extra careful when booking online—make sure to verify the room view beforehand.
  • Food Options: My hotel offered an all-inclusive package with three meals a day for ₹4,500, but I chose to eat out instead. There are plenty of local restaurants and dhabas nearby, giving you much better variety and flexibility.
  • Connectivity & Internet: The hotel’s Wi-Fi network was decent, providing around 30 Mbps for both upload and download speeds. However, the real game-changer was Airtel 5G was highly reliable, delivering speeds of over 200 Mbps.

Workation in Leh, Ladhakh from kerala

Hey everyone,

I'm planning a workation in Leh soon (solo, Mid july) . I’ll be flying in from Kochi and plan to work during the weekdays, explore the local area on the weekends

As a software engineer, I need to make sure the logistics make sense before I commit. I have a few specific concerns and would love your advice:

  1. Internet Reliability: I do work as a software engineer, so I need a highly stable connection. How reliable is the Wi-Fi/Fiber in Leh town right now? Which postpaid cellular networks are currently the most dependable for a hotspot fallback?
  2. Altitude/AMS: Going straight from sea level to 11,500 ft is a big jump. What’s the reality of acclimatizing while trying to work? Did brain fog affect your productivity in the first few days?
  3. 4-Day Long Weekend Itinerary: With Saturday through Tuesday completely off from work, where should I head? I’d love to see places like Nubra Valley or Pangong Tso, but I want to make sure I pace the altitudes safely.

Has anyone worked remotely from Thailand for 3–4 weeks when their company policy says remote work is limited to your home country.

I work for a large American multinational tech company and my employment paperwork mentioned my remote work location should be within my home country (India).

I’m not looking to relocate abroad or become a digital nomad. I normally live and work in my home country and plan to continue doing so.

I have a Thailand trip coming up and am considering spending about 4 weeks there. The first week would be paid leave, but for the remaining 2–3 weeks I’d be working normally while staying in Thailand. I would still be connecting through the company VPN as required.

A few details:
Fully remote role
Around 8 months into the job
No plans to move abroad permanently
No change in tax residency
Just a temporary workation
Performance wont suffer due to travel

I’m curious if anyone has been in a similar situation where the official policy was “remote within your home country” but you temporarily worked from another country for a few weeks.

What happened in practice?
Did IT/security notice foreign logins?
Did you tell your manager beforehand?
Were you asked to stop, take leave, or return?
Did anyone actually face HR issues for a short 3–4 week workation?
