Why are Italians so disconnected from their former colonies?

While the British, French, Portuguese and Belgians are still by and large connected to their former colonies in Africa, while that is not the case with Italy, neither culturally, nor linguistically, nor through immigration, and many Italians don’t even know where e.g. Somalia is located. Why is that?

First time in Italy, love your country, but I have a silly question. What about speed cameras?

Are you guys serious with this speed limit camera?

43°43'51.7"N 11°19'03.5"E right before Firenze.

You drive 130km/h. You come out from that tunnel. You can't see any warning signs because:
a) nothing is in English
b) there are so many trucks in the right lane that you would not see anyway

And right after that, there is a speed camera. Like less than 200 meters. Am I supposed to cause a road accident or what?

Please tell me it's not working...🙄🇮🇹

How was life in Italy in the 1980s?

Hey guys! I have asked a few questions about Italy in the past, and this topic is pretty interesting to me. I enjoy looking at how life was in different countries in the 80s-early 2000s. I also ask my father how his life was back in the day in his country-(EX-YU country), I am also interested in Italy.

How was daily life there back then?

How did people entertain themselves then?

How was soccer back then-(I heard it was the best era of italian football back then?

Were movies also popular? If So? Was it domestic ones or Hollywood ones?

Were they watched in cinemas or on TV and VHS tapes?

Overall, How was life then for average Italians?

Thanks for your answers, I look forward to hearing interesting stuff!!!!! How was life in Italy in the 1980s?

Why some Italians seem to openly support Putin?

Why among all the EU countries the support for Ukraine in Italy is the lowest? And why some people not just try to justify Putin, but they openly support him and his aggression? Are there some sort of cynical pragmatic national reasons, influence of Russian oligarchs in businesses, old transient revisionism, NATO skepticism/Kremlin anti-western narratives or what?

Are there open scientific sociological studies about this trend? Thank you

Moving to Italy on a study visa from Pakistan , is it worth it?

Hi everyone,

I’m from Pakistan and I’m considering moving to Italy on a study visa for a Master’s program. I wanted to ask for honest advice from people living in Italy, especially international students or people who moved there from outside the EU.

My situation is a bit complicated emotionally. My life in Pakistan is comfortable in some ways. I have my work setup, family/social familiarity, lower living costs, and I already work as a freelance developer. But culturally and personally, I don’t feel very connected to Pakistan. I’m not religious, and I often feel restricted by the social/cultural environment here.

Italy feels important to me because it could give me more independence, personal freedom, and a possible long-term path in Europe. But at the same time, leaving comfort behind feels scary and forced.
Italy also seems the most affordable to go to via study visa and its better then romania

Anyway, my main questions are:

  1. Is student life in Italy manageable for a non-EU student if I also do freelance work online?
  2. How hard is it to find part-time work without strong Italian at the start?
  3. Is Italy a good place for someone who wants a more secular/private lifestyle?
  4. Are italian people friendly
  5. How difficult is the bureaucracy for student visa, residence permit, and later work options?
  6. For people who moved from countries like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, etc., did Italy actually improve your quality of life?
  7. Would you recommend Italy as a long-term option, or only as a temporary study experience?

I understand Italy is not perfect. I know there can be bureaucracy, loneliness, language barriers, and job market issues. I’m not expecting a fantasy life. I’m just trying to understand whether the struggle is worth it compared to staying somewhere comfortable but culturally limiting.

Any honest advice would be appreciated.

Do Italians just not wear sunscreen, or not wear white?

I can’t find a sunscreen that doesn’t stain my white clothes yellow and it leads me to ask the question: do Italians just not wear sunscreen? Or they never wear white? How do you guys deal with this issue?

Why the hate for the Italian-American diaspora community?

Okay, this is a question I’ve seen often but I don’t like how people asked it, and I’m passionate about diaspora communities celebrating their culture how ever they see fit. I’m just tired of the hate. There’s people with years of Italian immigrant roots and I see people just kinda going “shut up, you’re American”. And what’s with the semantics crap? American is a huge country with a very large population. A lot of people have roots in places like Italy, Poland, Austria, Germany, Ireland, France, etc. So the short hand for that is just “I’m Irish”, “I’m German”, “I’m Italian”. 9 times out of 10, they don’t mean they’re citizens of that nation, they’re referring to their ethnic background. Italian and Italian-American culture isn’t the same, there’s a difference, why can’t we accept that? Why can’t we let diaspora communities celebrate their culture?

Which University/Universities in Italy is best for studying medicine?

Hello everyone! I’ve been thinking about attending university in Italy lately. In case anyone is wondering, I’m from Turkey and my goal is to take the UKMLE exam after graduation. English-taught education, international networking, and affordability are important to me. After doing a bit of research Italy seems like a great option and I noticed the University of Milan ranks well globally. What are your thoughts on UniMi, do you have any other suggestions? Thanks

Question for non Italians who have been to Italy: did you see any clear cultural differences between Northern and Southern Italy/Italians?

I am Italian and I see lots of cultural differences but I wonder if these differences are exaggerated by our provincial mentality or if foreigners see them too in the same way. Thanks

Would you rather have perfect pronunciation or perfect grammar?

I'm prepping for a trip to Italy, and I keep imagining myself freezing up and just aggressively gesturing at menus because my language skills aren't ready. To build up my confidence, I have been practicing my speaking skills every night before bed. My pronunciation tracker actually grades my accent and tells me exactly which syllables I am messing up on (love this). Should I be aiming for perfect pronunciation or perfect grammar? Which will locals prefer?

Are blue eyes a beauty standard in Italy?

Asking because I've been watching an Italian show (The Leopard) and every named character has had blue eyes except for 1. But according to Google, Italians are 70-80% brown eyed. Are blue eyed people considered more beautiful and hence become actors more?

Is Silvana perceived as an old person name by Italians?

Some young Italians (in their late 20s) said that female name Silvana is considered as old woman name in Italy. Is it just them or its a general sentiment of the people of Italy? I'd love to hear your opinions.

Just Being Italian?

Recently, a Southern Italian friend(m) told me that he and his best friend(f) hug each other a lot. But he avoids doing it in front of her boyfriend, out of "respect."

From my perspective, that reads as sneaky. If it's truly innocent, why hide it?

Personally, I(f) also have close male friends and treat them like homies. My behavior around my opposite-sex friends stays exactly the same whether or not my boyfriend is there, because I won't do anything behind his back that I wouldn't do in front of him.

But his point of view is: friends are just friends, and toning it down around a partner is simply being considerate, not deceptive.

  1. So where do you draw the line? Are they being sneaky, or respectful? Where do you land on this?

  2. For those from Southern Italy—where is the line between friendly physical affection and something more? It's so confusing from the outside!

Help find a song?

Hello

I recently heard a song, but I don't know the title of the original version since the one I heard was a cover. I was wondering if you might recognize it.

I’m also open to discovering new music, so if you have any recommendations, I’d be glad to hear them. https://youtu.be/mRt9nuV9UvY?is=1qudNN3qtFE_ioJ7
