Correct Powder? Colt 1860 Army.

Was given this powder by a revolutionary war reenactor friend. I thought it was triple F but can’t tell. I shot, COLT ARMY 1860, for the first time today with 24 grains, lubed patch, and then proper size .44 caliber ball that seated with a nice thin lead ring. When I shot it felt extremely underpowered and sounded like a Roman candle. Ball had very little velocity. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solved: Thanks, Y’all! I appreciate you guys taking the time to comment and help out.

Firing the Springfield 1842 and using the bayonet in War of Rights.

I think the musket animations in War of Rights are incredibly realistic, so I wanted to share them with you guys.

fun fact : the Springfield Model 1842 is the last smoothbore musket produced by US armories, but the first to utilize the percussion system. Although designed with a thick barrel intended for future rifling

The One Day A Year That I Don’t Automatically Shoot Suppressed…

80 grains of 2F equivalent pyrodex vs 80 grains of 3F 777 in a pedersoli 12g sxs on the fourth to piss off my neighbors that complain about people shooting guns (blanks) while they illegally burn about a cubic yard of trash during the worst dry spell we’ve had all year. The next time they call the cops, i will let the boyz in blue mag dump my machine gun into the barn i am about to tear down. Bet they will love hearing a half hour love song of 124 nato supers digging me an extra freedom trench towards the back nine. Happy f’ing fourth, you filthy fellow Americans!

Got three pounds of 777 and pyro, a case of 9mm i loaded, plus three drums of reloaded steel case cast BS 7.62x39. A literal pile of black powder guns, a postie m72, and a reising. And we loaded some of my dad’s ashes into our signal cannon for midnight. Tally fucking ho.

200 yard freedom delivery - Have a great 4th, let’s go!!

Crazy you can see the ball in the slo-mo. Happy 4th and hope everyone has a good day!! Took an educated guess and aimed about 3.5 feet high and 2 feet to the right (about 15mph wind right to left) and boom. Definitely the best shot I’ve made with a black powder firearm.

Had read .50cal carries better than .45 past 150 yards so decided to try 200 with an old DGW Southern Mtn Rifle since this one runs 1700fps consistently with 75 grains of 3F and is very accurate. Could do prob 225 with the same load but 250 or more would be very difficult even with a higher charge just due to aiming and seeing the actual target.

Powder?

I’m sorry if this has been asked a hundred times. So, when looking for powder, all I have seen around me is Pyrodex and Hodgen 777, which I assume these should not be used? Or that’s what a couple of local enthusiasts would say.

What do you all recommend, and where to find?

Nickel plated bp question

I recently inherited my great grandfathers forehand arms co 32.
Planning on loading some bp rounds for it
What are the best ways to clean it? I’ve heard that you have to be careful with nickel plating and what products you use. I normally use ballistol, but I’ve heard that’s no good on nickel.
Does anyone have some info on loads for it as well?
Thanks all

I like big bores and I cannot lie...

A few months ago I didn't own a single black powder firearm. Here's the gang today, two more incoming and probably more on the way!

I have .45, .54, and .58 - convince me why I might need a .50? It just seems like an orphan caliber to me... Not as efficient as .45, lacks the versatility of a .54 and can't hit with the authority of the .58 am I missing something...

Pedersoli Plainsman .45

Zoli 1863 Springfield reproduction .58 (Zouave)

Lyman Great Plains .54

Investarms Hawken .58

Pedersoli Kodiak Express Double rifle .58

Investarms Hawken Carbine .45

On the way:

Armi Sport Kentuckian .45

Pedersoli Mortimer .54 flintlock

Really hoping to pick up an antique status Remington New Model Army .44 when the opportunity presents itself

Cap Rake - Miracle Fix Or Myth?

TL;DW below

>!In Jake's 2nd episode of "This minor upgrade really improves the reliability of this specific cap and ball revolver! Why didn't I do this sooner?", he tries out a cap rake on an open top Colt that cap jammed way too much for his liking. Upon installing the cap rake, the cap jam problem seemed to be completely resolved as the gun was shot several times without a single cap jam. Granted, the testing wasn't super extensive, but Jake's initial results really impressed him and they seem great so far.!<

>!Which begs the question. Why don't more cap and ball revolvers have cap rakes installed from the factory and why don't Remington 1858 NMA reproductions have grooves cut into the cylinder pin?!<

Identification help

I'm trying to identify if this is a commercially produced Centermark Fusil or if it was put together from parts by someone. No serials or other numbers that I can find, although I don't know if Centermark did serials. Any easy way to determine the caliber?

Thanks!

Doing some draws

25 grains of 3 f pyrodex

The cross draw is far more comfortable but slower for me

Colt First gen U.S. marked

At my local gun shop today I found a number matching 45LC Colt first gen with its factory letter for $1500. I plan on loading some black powder rounds for it and having a blast. Lockup on every cylinder is perfect. It's marked U.S. which it's letter verifies. I'm leaning toward it being a cavalry model.

I found company who produce double barrel Cap-and-ball shotgun replica.

Company named "super gun" reproduced Prussian inventor Wilhelm Collath hunting shotgun on paper cartrige and caps (somethink like in Maynar Carbine).

Ammo box

Experimenting with making one piece paper cartridges and handling a few made me realize how fragile they can be, meaning paper cartridges in general, so I made this historically inspired solution to carry one full cylinder's worth. Its a slide design because I couldnt be bothered to make a new one each time, but I can see the practicality of having a closed little box. Its way more secure than this, albeit a bit more difficult to access in a pinch. But for modern shooting, both can work I guess.

A bigger box with a lid would be better for the range, but alas, that is for a future project!

WGW Baby Russian

I picked this up off that auction site, it was mislabeled with a poor picture. I cleaned off the rust and repaired the grip, gave it a good cleaning. All functions are now 100%. These first model #2 single actions (Baby Russians) bring a premium over the second model.
