For those that use blackpowder substitutes, which one do you like best?

I'm particularly curious as to which substitutes you think smell the best, which ones are the easiest to clean, and which ones are the least prone to rusting guns.

I'm A New Vegas Fan That's Playing FO3 For The First Time In Years: FO3 Is Better Than I Remember It

While there are things I think New Vegas does better than 3, let's first talk about stuff I liked, found interesting or was impressed by.

The familiar, iconic and recognizable environment of DC

I might even argue that of all the Fallout games, even considering 4, Fallout 3 looks the most like it's real world counterpart, even if it's a condensed, retro futuristic/post apocalyptic version of it. As someone that has actually seen DC metro tunnels, the Capital Building, the Smithsonian Museums, The Washington Monument, The White House, The Lincoln Memorial, The Jefferson Memorial and the general area, I felt right at home despite the fact I visited DC just once about a decade ago. I have visited the Vegas area more recently, but it wasn't to see places like the Old Mormon Fort, Hoover Dam, Goodsprings or other New Vegas landmarks.

A solid albeit limited music selection

There may be less songs overall than in New Vegas, but I've listened to just about every song in New Vegas many times over, and the music in 3 is pretty solid for what it is. I think I recognized some songs and artists from the TV show listening to Galaxy News Radio.

Fast skill progression and you get perks every time you level up

This can be both a positive and a negative depending on your perspective. You can level up skills such as lockpick, science and speech much faster than you can in New Vegas, but the level cap is also smaller.

Short main story

Again, this can be a positive or negative, but sometimes it's nice to play a relatively short and punchy main story line in a RPG that doesn't take hours upon hours to fully complete.

Limited resources

I felt like I am more strapped for consumables in 3 than in New Vegas, which can increase the challenge of the game in a good way, but can also be annoying when you're having to ration ammo and health items earlier in a playthrough. This point connects to the overall desolation of the Capital Wasteland overall.

Less dangerous deathclaws

Because deathclaws in this game aren't as formidable to deal with and don't congregate in packs like New Vegas, they aren't as nightmare inducing for new and veteran players alike.

Armor isn't as strong for both NPC's and the player character

Weapons that might feel useless against heavily armored enemies in New Vegas can feel oddly punchy and useful. I can use the combat shotgun against Enclave soldiers at close range to surprisingly useful effect, something that would be harder to do win New Vegas. Weapons in general seem to be much more punchy against a variety of armored enemies.

Bobbleheads

One thing that 3, 4 and 76 have that New Vegas doesn't is collectible bobbleheads that boost your stats. Sure, there's the snow globes that you can sell for caps, but I might argue bobbleheads are a better collectible item than snow globes.

Stealing stuff doesn't automatically generate negative karma, even if you're stealing from the baddies

Yao Guai

Karma system instead of the faction reputation system

While the faction system in New Vegas has a lot of good things about it, the absence of a faction system and emphasis on general karma is a nice change of pace, even if I might prefer the faction reputation system of FNV.

Post game content after the main quest is complete, even if it's only accessed through DLC

Wind sounds

There's a certain wind sound that you hear often when exploring the Capital Wasteland that really portrays the Capital Wasteland as super desolate that I like.

No cazadores, tunnelers, nightkin, nightstalkers or lakelurks

These enemies present unique challenges in New Vegas that don't exist in 3.

Metro tunnels

One thing that I dislike about both 3 and New Vegas is that I don't really enjoy navigating the vaults in the games. The vaults of 3 and New Vegas can be hard and not fun to navigate through. However, the Metro tunnels of DC are a nice set of dungeons to crawl through, even if you have to crawl through a lot of them if you want to explore every part of the downtown DC/Alexandria area.

Fallout 3 sets up a lot of things that comes in later games like New Vegas and 4 surprisingly well

Playing against the Enclave in 3 gave me a new perspective on Arcade and the Remnants in New Vegas. Also, interacting with Doctor Li, the Railroad, synths and the Institute in 3 really sets up the characters, factions and events in Fallout 4. I had no idea or forgot how much Fallout 4 as a game draws from Fallout 3.

A better, dedicated player house in Megaton

I guess the Lucky 38 counts for the New Vegas version, but as far as a player house and local settlement that has everything you might want in a base, 3 and 4 does this better in my opinion than New Vegas.

The Capital Wasteland truly feels like a desolate, post apocolyptic wasteland directly affected by nuclear war

Now to discuss the stuff I didn't like or prefer

Bullet sponge enemies

Maybe I'm using the wrong guns or my weapon skills aren't high enough, but a lot of enemies in the Capital Wasteland take a lot of bullets to put down, even on the very easy difficulty. Some enemies like certain variants of Super Mutants can sometimes take an entire magazine of an assault rifle or chinese assault rifle to take down.

Dated, less than enjoyable and clunky combat

While New Vegas could be criticized for less than ideal combat, even for it's time, 3 feels even more clunky and dissatisfying despite being only a couple of years older as a game.

No aim down iron sights feature

Limited/non existent crafting

You can craft so many things in New Vegas, but in 3, a lot of the crafting I was used to in New Vegas didn't exist at all or was severely limited.

Limited/less meaningful skill checks in dialogue

Fallout New Vegas rewards a variety of build types in many ways, but in 3, it seems like the only skill that matters in dialogue is speech

Limited perks to choose from

Not only are the perks themselves limited in number, but a lot of the perks in 3 boil down to "This perk increases 1 or 2 skills by a certain number of points"

Speech checks have a percentage to pass, not pass/fail

Instead of needing to come back to a speech check after leveling up and/or using items to buff your speech skill, you can just save before dialogue and reload saves until you pass the speech check, and annoyingly, you can still fail a speech check even if your speech skill itself is really high.

Limited weapons, no weapon modifications and no ammo types

Limited consumable items

The combat shotgun has a slower fire rate than the riot shotgun in New Vegas and I think it looks better

More limited roleplaying overall and a very linear main story

More desolate, random and empty map

It makes sense from a lore perspective considering DC was much harder hit by the nukes than the Mojave, but even though the Mojave is desolate in it's own way, it still feels more full of things to to find and see than the Capital Wasteland. Apart from the metro tunnels and the downtown DC/Arlington area itself, the factions, settlements and points of interest in the more desolate parts of the FO3 map seem to be very randomly placed with no rhyme or reason, making exploration for newer players looking for good loot, interesting quests or NPC's more a game of luck than of truly satisfying exploration.

Less incentives to sneak

Because enemies seem to spawn more randomly in the Capital Wasteland (maybe it's more because I'm much more familiar with New Vegas), I don't feel much of a need to level up my sneak stat like I do in a lot of my New Vegas runs.

Limited lighting

Even in broad daylight, it seems like the game is oddly dark or dimly lit unless you crank the brightness all the way up.

Limited factions and faction play

This plays into the desolation bit. The Capital Wasteland just has the BOS and Enclave as major power players, but in New Vegas, there are dozens of major and minor factions that are intertwined with each other in different ways that can be really juicy for a roleplaying game enthusiast. Heck, even the raiders in New Vegas have different leaders and factions, in 3, the variety of raiders and raider leaders is less pronounced. There are some interesting factions like Temple Of The Union, Paradise Falls, the BOS outcasts, Tenpenny Towers, Roy Phillips' gang, the underworld, Republic of Dave and Little Lamplight. However, I think there are several big reasons why the Fallout TV show is set in the southwest and visits New Vegas rather than around DC so it can revisit factions and characters from 3.

No hardcore mode

New Vegas' hardcore mode with sleep deprivation, starvation, dehydration, ammo weighing stuff, more limited healing mechanics from consumables and perma death for companions can change New Vegas in meaningful ways. However, such an optional mode does not exist in 3.

Lackluster NPC companions

I would argue that of the newer single player Fallout games, Fallout 3 has the most forgettable companions. New Vegas has interesting and memorable companions, 4 might even have even more interesting and memorable companions than New Vegas, but with 3, I'm not getting that same sense. I think part of this is because New Vegas and 4 have companion quests while 3 does not, so it feels like companions in 3 are there just to help you handle combat better and carry your stuff, not a significant addition to the overall story. Also, screw you Fawkes for not going into Project Purity for me unless I buy Broken Steel.

Super Mutant Behemoths

In some ways, I prefer dealing with FNV enemies like the Giant Robo Scorpion, the Deathclaw Mother and the Deathclaw Alpha Male than Super Mutant Behemoths.

Less than stellar graphics

I know this is pretty low hanging fruit considering FO3 is almost 20 years old, but New Vegas is only 2 years younger than 3, can still be played on PS3 and Xbox 360 and I think it looks noticeably better overall than FO3.

Unplayable on PC without mods

Despite what everyone might complain about with New Vegas regarding bugs, crashes and general playability (which I have experienced first hand playing New Vegas on PC), Fallout 3 is quite literally unplayable without mods on PC for me as of the time of this post. 3 straight up crashes as soon as I try to launch it. I ended up uninstalling Fallout 3 from my Steam account and requested a refund, forcing me to play 3 on my Xbox. Yes, I know that 3 can work on PC if you mod it, but I should not have to mod a game in order to be able to successfully launch the game in the first place.

Summary

While there are things about Fallout 3 that I might like or even prefer over New Vegas, I do like New Vegas as a game overall more than Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 truly feels like you're trying to survive in a desolate, post apocalyptic wasteland of the United States capital, Washington DC, hundreds of years after a truly devastating nuclear war in every sense. On the other hand, New Vegas still feels post apocalyptic, but in a place that is well on it's way to fully rebuilding.

I think Fallout 3 shines during NPC dialogue and cut scenes, exploring the ruins of downtown DC and Alexandria and it's general wasteland aesthetic and ambiance. Where I think Fallout 3 comes up short is in it's graphics, combat variety and enjoyability and a too randomly scattered and desolate wasteland outside DC/Alexandria proper.

I just played Fallout 3 for the first time in years. Here's how I think it compares to New Vegas...

While there are a lot of things that I think New Vegas does better than 3, let's first talk about stuff I liked, found interesting or was impressed by, even considering 3 is an older game than New Vegas.

The familiar, iconic and recognizable environment of DC

I might even argue that of all the Fallout games, even considering 4, Fallout 3 looks the most like it's real world counterpart, even if it's a retro futuristic/post apocalyptic version of it. As someone that has been in DC metro tunnels, seen the Capital Building, the Smithsonian Museums, The Washington Monument, The White House, The Lincoln Memorial, The Jefferson Memorial and the general area, I felt right at home despite the fact I visited DC just once about a decade ago. I have visited the Vegas area fairly recently, but it wasn't to see places like the Old Mormon Fort, Hoover Dam, Goodsprings or other New Vegas landmarks.

A solid even if limited music selection

There may be less songs overall than New Vegas, but I've listened to just about every song in New Vegas many times over, and the music in 3 is pretty solid for what it is. I think I recognized some songs and artists from the TV show.

Fast skill progression

This can be both a positive and a negative depending on your perspective. You can level up skills such as lockpick, science and speech much faster than you can in New Vegas, but the level cap is also smaller.

Short main story

Again, this can be a positive or negative, but sometimes it's nice to play a relatively short and punchy main story line in a RPG.

Limited resources

I felt like I was more strapped for consumables in 3 than in New Vegas, which can increase the challenge of the game in a good way, or be an annoyance.

Less dangerous deathclaws

Because deathclaws in this game aren't as formidable to deal with and don't congregate in packs like New Vegas, they aren't as nightmare inducing for new and veteran players alike.

Armor isn't as OP for both NPC's and the player character

Weapons that might feel useless in New Vegas without the proper perks like shotguns feel oddly punchy and useful, even against heavily armored enemies. I was using the combat shotgun against Enclave soldiers at close range to surprisingly useful effect.

Karma system instead of the faction reputation system

While the faction system in New Vegas has a lot of good things about it, the absence of a faction system and emphasis on general karma was a nice change of pace, even if I might prefer the faction reputation system.

Familiar gameplay elements

Certain parts of 3 are 2nd nature as a New Vegas player

Post game content after the main quest is complete, even if it's only accessed through DLC

No cazadores, nightkin, nightstalkers or lakelurks

These enemies present unique challenges in New Vegas that don't exist in 3.

Now to get to the meat and potatoes of this reflection, the stuff I didn't like or prefer

Bullet sponge enemies

Maybe I was using the wrong guns, but a lot of enemies in the Capital Wasteland annoyingly take a lot of bullets to put down, even on very easy difficulty. Some of the enemies like certain variants of Super Mutants can sometimes take an entire magazine of an assault rifle or chinese assault rifle to take down.

Instead of needing to come back to a speech check after leveling up and/or using items to buff your speech skill, you can just save before dialogue and reload saves until you pass the speech check, and annoyingly, you can still fail a speech check even if your speech skill itself is high.

The game doesn't really incentivize you to explore

Outside of pure curiosity, or a desire for more XP or more loot, the game doesn't give you too many compelling reasons to explore the Capital Wasteland.

Metro tunnels

While it makes sense that the nation's capital would be tough to navigate after direct hits from a nuclear war, it doesn't make it less annoying to slog through the metro system to get to certain destinations for the first time

Limited weapons, no weapon modifications and no ammo types

Limited consumable items

Combat shotgun has a slower fire rate than the riot shotgun in New Vegas and I think it looks better

More limited roleplaying and linear story choices

While New Vegas gives a roleplaying game player many decisions to make throughout the game , 3's main quest boils down to a small handful of decisions that amount to self sacrifice, letting someone else take the fall or being cartoonishly evil. Just look at the possible ending slides for New Vegas. There could be trillions of unique ending slide show possibilities in the game, but for Fallout 3, it drops to just a couple hundred different ending slide show possibilities.

More desolate and empty map

It makes sense from a lore perspective considering DC was much harder hit by the nukes than the Mojave, but even though the Mojave is desolate in it's own way, it still feels more full of things to to find and see than the Capital Wasteland.

Less incentives to sneak

Because enemies seem to spawn more randomly in the Capital Wasteland (maybe it's more because I'm much more familiar with New Vegas), I didn't feel much of a need to level up my sneak stat like I do in a lot of my New Vegas runs.

Limited lighting

Even in broad daylight, it seemed like the game is oddly dark or dimly lit.

Heck, even the raiders in New Vegas have different leaders and factions, in 3, it's just general raiders and the slavers.

Companions are mostly unnecessary and can be hard to find

Fawkes not being able to enter the irradiated control room for you unless you buy a DLC

Seems like bad writing that they patched up later on

Bethesda's reliance or penchant on finding lost family members who left a vault for the main storyline

No hardcore mode

New Vegas' hardcore mode with sleep deprivation, starvation, dehydration, ammo weighing stuff, more limited healing mechanics from consumables and perma death for companions can change New Vegas in meaningful ways. However, such an optional mode does not exist in 3.

Less iconic/likeable/memorable NPC's

As well as there being less unique NPC's or NPC's in general in 3, I find many of the NPC's in 3 to be less endearing or memorable than the NPC's in New Vegas. Maybe this is just a preference thing for me personally, but I think many other gamers might share my sentiment here.

Super Mutant Behemoths

In some ways, I prefer dealing with FNV enemies like the Giant Robo Scorpion, the Deathclaw Mother and the Deathclaw Alpha Male than Super Mutant Behemoths.

Limited ways to complete quests

Many of the quests in New Vegas give you several ways to complete a quest, but in 3, you're often more limited in how those quests can be completed.

Unplayable on PC without mods

Despite what everyone might complain about with New Vegas regarding bugs, crashes and general playability (which I have experienced first hand playing New Vegas on PC), Fallout 3 is quite literally unplayable without mods on PC as of the time of this post. 3 straight up crashes as soon as you try to launch it unless you know how to mod 3. I ended up uninstalling Fallout 3 from my Steam account and requested a refund, forcing me to play 3 on my Xbox.

Summary

While there are things about Fallout 3 that I might like or even prefer over New Vegas, I like New Vegas as a game overall much better than Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 truly feels like you're trying to survive in a desolate, post apocalyptic wasteland of the United States capital, Washington DC, hundreds of years after a truly devastating nuclear war in every sense, both for better and for worse. On the other hand, New Vegas still feels post apocalyptic, but in a geographic area and society that is well on it's way to fully rebuilding itself.

You know, stuff like from European colonization, French and Indian War, American Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican American War, American Civil War, Wild West/Native American Resistance.

I rarely conceal carry because I have little time and money to train with my pistols

On top of that, my church has an inconsistently enforced and communicated ban on lethal weapons, a lot of the jobs in my career either discourage upon or openly prohibit employees from having lethal weapons on the premises, my wardrobe isn't particularly well suited to concealed carry, and my current CCW setup isn't exactly comfortable or lightweight.

That's part of the reason I'm considering getting a KelTec P32 like my dad has instead of the subcompact P365 I have now. Also thought about getting a belly band holster.

I'm at the point where I doubt my ability to reliably hit a man-sized target at 25 yards, even under ideal circumstances.

Are there any ending slides that don't sit right with you?

For me, it's the ending slides related to the Fiends and the Followers of the Apocalypse.

I realize Obsidian developed FNV under a tight schedule, but I still think these two sets of ending slides in particular are worth criticizing because they don't seem to reflect the world the player has spent the entire game shaping.

1. The Fiends

I do concede that the Fiends are portrayed as a pretty serious threat to the NCR through many means, and for good reason. However, I never considered the Fiends to be a faction so dangerous that they can overrun the largest NCR military base in the Mojave, even considering that the Legion uses the Fiends to weaken the NCR near Camp McCarran. Even I have trouble wrapping my mind around all of that as someone who considers the NCR to be a paper tiger.

I think that the ending slides overestimate their ability to wipe out or severely damage Camp McCarran. Unless every major Fiend leader is dead, the Fiends are still capable of launching a coordinated assault on Camp McCarran.

Based on what I've seen and heard about the Fiends after hundreds of hours of playtime, the Fiends to me are a loose collection of druggies with guns held together by a handful of dangerous leaders, not an organized army capable of conducting a large-scale assault against a fortified NCR base with a good chance of success.

The way the Fiend slides are written makes several player decisions feel completely unimportant. Whether you stop Captain Curtis' sabotage in I Put a Spell on You, expose Contreras' smuggling operation, or influence whether First Recon stays in Camp McCarran or head to Forlorn Hope, the decisive factor in Camp McCarran's fate is almost entirely based on whether every major Fiend leader gets lead poisoning.

2. The Followers of the Apocalypse

The Followers have a similar problem, particularly in the Yes Man ending.

I don't have an issue with the Followers struggling. They're a humanitarian organization running a charity clinic in a post apocalyptic ghetto, so it makes sense they won't have the same potential as the NCR or Legion.

My issue is that the ending doesn't seem to account for everything the Courier can do to improve the Follower's situation. You can get Bill Ronte and Jacob Hoff sober, establish a medical supply agreement with the Atomic Wrangler, murder Dixon, kill off the Omertas, turn the Fiends into piles of green goo, and either eliminate the Great Khans or convince them to leave the Mojave. You can spend the entire game reducing the very problems that overwhelm the Followers.

Yet in the Yes Man ending, the Followers still end up drowning in druggies with little indication that any efforts to help the Followers made a meaningful difference.

The problem isn't that the Followers struggle—it's that the ending seems to understate or outright ignore the total impact of the player's actions. Considering how much emphasis New Vegas places on meaningful choices, these two epilogues stand out to me as some of the few places where the ending doesn't fully reflect everything the Courier accomplished.

CMV: Political discussions on Reddit have never led to a meaningful impact on a political issue

Notice that I said political issue. I do not consider wallstreetbets creating a huge financial upset regarding the Gamestop stock to be a political issue in the strictest sense. So, we can see that in certain cases, Reddit can be the catalyst for significant change in the world, but I have yet to see that be the case for a political issue.

It is true that Reddit has hundreds of millions of daily or weekly users, but I do think that Reddit's influence on any political issue is minimal in comparison to the amount of users that use Reddit on a semi regular basis.

I believe a vast majority of people discussing politics on Reddit already have their minds made up on the gamut of issues being discussed throughout the world and thus, it's just a place for people to yap in their own echo chambers about world events. Are there exceptions to this? Of course. Do those exceptions have a meaningful impact on politics? I don't think so.

Many subreddits of a directly or indirectly political nature all have some sort of political bias where a single viewpoint often prevails and dissenting views are often downvoted significantly and are therefore largely hidden from the view of other users. This is the case for both the largest subreddits with millions of users and the smaller subreddits.

The CEO of In-N-Out recently confirmed that an In-N-Out employee was killed in yesterday's shooting in Twin Falls

My takeaways from the Idaho In-N-Out shooting

For those who don't know, as of the time of this post, 3 people were killed and multiple people were injured in a shooting near an In-N-Out restaurant just a few hours ago in Twin Falls, Idaho.

https://notthebee.com/article/unknown-cowboy-seen-engaging-active-shooter-at-idaho-in-n-out

From what I know (which isn't saying much because this is a developing story), a young white man shot an AR-15 into a parked Tesla and another person shot a suppressed pistol supposedly in the direction of the AR-15 wielding young man. Multiple people have been killed or wounded in the incident, including the main suspect of the shooting.

I think many people have been desensitized to shootings in the US, have shrugged their shoulders and said something like "Well, I guess that's the price of the 2nd Amendment".

I feel like this shooting may quickly fade from public memory because the body count isn't or won't be high enough to be comparable to mass shootings like the Uvalde or Las Vegas shootings.

It made me also think that the guns we should be training with the most are our pistols. I believe we are the most likely to need our pistols in a self defense incident, whether it is in or outside the home, and who knows what engagement distance we may find ourselves in. Rifles and shotguns are pretty easy and quick to become somewhat proficient with compared to pistols.

Surely there must be a way to allow sound citizens to own arms suitable for self defense while also preventing those who wish to do harm from obtaining and using guns. In other words, I don't 100% agree with 2nd Amendment absolutists that say "every gun law is an infringement" but I definitely don't 100% agree with Giffords that want to make it virtually impossible for everyone including sound citizens to own arms for their self defense and use. Hopefully that makes sense.

What Makes New Vegas Great: A Reflection On What I Want From Future Fallout Games

With the exciting news that a Fallout 3 remaster, New Vegas remaster, and two new Fallout games are in the works, I wanted to discuss what arguably makes New Vegas the best Fallout game and even the best RPG video game ever made. But, even New Vegas fans like myself can admit NV has its shortcomings.

What I Want Less Of

Bugs (Of Course): Whether it’s the game crashing completely at inconvenient moments or other bugs, including quest bugs, New Vegas can have frustrating moments related to these issues. Hopefully these issues will be ironed out and removed in future Fallout games. Will bugs be completely gone from future Fallout games? Maybe not. Would it be nice if it did happen? Yes.

Stealing from Evil Karma NPC’s or Factions Yielding Negative Karma: So you mean to tell me killing certain NPC’s gives me good karma but stealing from the same NPC’s gives me negative karma? -_- To quote a previous US president, “Come on, man”

Automatically Getting Negative Reputation With A Faction For Doing Something Bad Against Them While Hidden: Seems like a cop out to me. You mean to tell me that there really are spies everywhere that know whenever I kill or steal from a faction even if I’m in the middle of nowhere with absolutely no witnesses?

A Badly Designed Difficulty System: A difficulty system where very hard means you deal less damage and enemies can take more damage is not a good difficulty system. Difficulty systems that just make enemies more tanky AND players more fragile aren’t that fun. What’s better is difficulty only affecting player character health, how hard it is to sneak and how aggressive and competent players are in combat. If I shoot an unarmored human in the head with just about any gun, with little exceptions they should go night night instantly.

Companion Quests Having Unknown/Complicated Triggers That Can Be Easy To Miss: Looking at New Vegas wikis, the companion quests can be easy to miss if you don’t know what you need to do or not do in order to trigger certain companion quests.

What Makes New Vegas Great

Low PC Operating Requirements: This is more of New Vegas being almost two decades old and computer tech advancing since then, but it’s nice having a game that almost any modern PC can run flawlessly.

Affordability And Bang For Your Buck: Again, this is due to New Vegas being such an old game, but the ultimate edition is just $20 on Steam right now, that is an amazing deal for a game and several DLC packs for such an immense amount of replayability.

Console Commands: This is more of a general compliment on recent Fallout games than a New Vegas specific thing, but it’s nice to have an option to do so many things in the PC games that are straight up unavailable on consoles. Want to make yourself 50 feet tall and fast? God mode? Add any item or NPC you want? Sure, all thanks to console commands.

Debug guns: This is related to the console commands, but it’s kinda fun to have super OP guns you can mess around with like the debug mega pistol, disintegrator or the faderator.

Four DLC’s With Unique And Fairly Well Written Characters And Stories: While Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 have DLC’s that I might like just as much or maybe even better than DLC’s in New Vegas, I do still want to compliment the FNV DLC’s for what they are.

Rushing Water: I only recently discovered what Rushing Water even is, and I really wish I knew about it sooner. Rushing Water is a part of the Lonesome Road DLC, can be crafted using just Jet and Purified Water, and increases attack speed with a vast majority of guns and melee weapons in the game by 50% by 30 seconds, and this can stack on top of the Fast Shot perk. It turns certain guns from okay or good weapons to use in general to phenomenal or borderline overpowered. Rushing Water temporarily turns you into Jerry Miculek or insert amazing martial artist/swordsman here.

Gambling: In hindsight, putting gambling in a game where you can have a very high Luck stat might be a bit broken, but it can still be fun nevertheless. Also, I don’t hate Caravan. I actually learned how to play it and can win if I really put my mind to it.

Ragdoll Physics And Death Animations: I think that New Vegas has an old school, cartoony type of death animation/ragdoll physics that I enjoy much more than the more modern Fallout games like 4 and 76.

Any Character Build Can Work: While there might be potential meta builds, because there are so many different perks, weapons and armor sets, just about any character build can succeed in the Mojave. You can often complete the same quest through several means, whether it’s through outright murder, science check, speech check or whatever, the game gives you many options.

Reputation System: There are many factions and towns in the game that can punish or reward your actions towards them, which can sometimes also lead to getting a negative reputation other factions as a side consequence.

Well Written Characters And Factions: Because the major factions of New Vegas have so many pros and cons (for the most part), the debate about which major faction is best for the hobby still rages to this day. None of the main factions is the distinctively good option.

Very Little Essential Characters: There only a small handful of NPC’s in New Vegas that are deemed essential and thus cannot be killed (AFAIK it’s just children, Yes Man, and anyone the Courier has in their party), so while not everyone may do a kill everyone playthrough with recurring frequency, it is nice to know something like that is an option. Also, because the Gun Runners kiosk is a robot in a bulletproof store, that can be your fallback vender if you kill all the other ones.

Immense Opportunity For Player Choice: Fallout 3’s story and player decision making often feels very linear, while the decision making ability for players in New Vegas feels very open ended on what you decide to do or not do in the game.

Replayability And Amount Of Content: I have put almost 700 hours into FNV over the years and despite that, I am still learning things about the game on every playthrough or watching other people play the game for the first time. Maybe it’s a dialogue option you didn’t know you had to complete a certain quest or something else.

High Weapon Damage/Low TTK:  One of my bigger complaints about the 4 and 76 is that a lot of enemies can feel overly tanky, even on very easy mode. With FNV, that is largely not the case. Weapons can often feel very satisfying and quick to use. Confession time. I have been playing FNV on very easy mode a lot recently and very recently, choosing not to use armor. That way, I have a “custom mode” where enemies are killed nice and quick but I can also die quick if I’m not careful.

Great Soundtrack: FNV may have the best soundtrack/radio station quality of any video game I have ever played. Also, shout out to Mr New Vegas, who may be the best radio DJ of all time.

You can jump right into the action when your playthrough starts: You wake up at doc mitchell’s house, set up your character and can get released straight into the wasteland. For veteran players, this can often take just a few minutes. However, other modern fallout games like 3, 4 and 76 often require you to do more preliminary stuff before you can venture out into the wastes.

Western location and western features: New Vegas is the only Fallout video game to be made within the past 20 years to be distinctly set in a location west of the Mississippi River and it shows in a refreshingly unique way. Cowboy guns, cowboy perks, cowboy outfits and cowboy songs.

A departure from looking for lost family members: Instead of in 3 or 4 where the main story revolves on finding lost family, you’re just a courier with an endless amount of possible backstories on a quest for revenge

Ammo reloading/crafting: New Vegas might have the most in depth ammo reloading system of any game I have ever played. As someone that wants to handload ammo IRL, it is really nice to see that kind of system in a game like New Vegas.

VATS completely pausing time: Unlike 4 or 76 where using VATS slows time in game considerably but doesn’t pause it completely.

No critical hit buildup meter: New Vegas either having a random or guaranteed critical hit system is much better than the crap 4 and 76 have.

A much better and varied dialogue system: 4 and 76’s dialogue system is a downgrade across the board from both 3 AND New Vegas.

Skill checks being total pass or total fail: I also like how skill checks are either you pass them or you don’t. No percent chance of passing a skill check that is either known to you like in 3 or partially hidden like in 4. So, no reloading saves until you pass a skill check, you gotta come back to the skill check with the exact amount of skill that you need.

What I Want To See From A New Vegas Remaster

Adding In Cut Content, Especially A Post Game Mode: One missed opportunity of FNV is that once you complete the main quest, the game ends. However, Fallout 4 lets you keep playing after the main quest is completed and I believe there is post game content in the game files, so gimme more of that please for FNV.

Adding More Things Into The Game: Due to engine limitations of the original game, certain parts of the map had to be split up in to separate pieces and if you try to spawn in more people or creatures to make certain parts of the game feel more alive through console commands, the game engine can’t keep up and frame rates start to drop. I get that the Mojave Wasteland can be pretty empty and desolate, but I think some parts should feel more alive like the Strip and it’s casinos.

More weapon modification options: As much as I love to criticize 4 and 76, one thing those games got right was greatly expanding the amount of weapon mods that you can do to your weapons. Many guns in FNV can’t be customized at all in for the guns you can mod, you might have just one or two mods you can put onto them.

What I Do NOT Want To See In A New Vegas Remaster

Turning New Vegas Into Fallout 4 Mojave Edition: There are a lot of things about 4 and 76 that I do not like. There are many things about New Vegas that I do like, including certain things that some people might not like. So, I hope the devs do not forget what makes New Vegas so great and err on the side of caution in keeping New Vegas pretty original to what made it great.

Basically The Same Game As The Original Just With Bug Fixes And Better Graphics: With that being said, I think that remasters with bug fixes and better graphics are largely pointless as long as the bugs in the original game aren’t too bad. The remaster should justify whatever price it commands as the mods for the original game are almost countless.

Nice But More Optional Things To Have For Future Fallout Games

Make The Riot Shotgun In FNV Full Auto And Make The Combat Shotgun Have A Faster Fire Rate: With the Fast Shot perk, the Riot Shotgun has a higher rate of fire in semi auto mode than the Combat Shotgun does in 4 with a Rapid Receiver. Also, it’s nice to have something be full auto even if the rate of fire doesn’t increase over semi auto so you don’t have to click as much.

Make a single player focused game with optional multiplayer: Fallout as a franchise seems to really excel as a single player only game, but that doesn’t mean that I think it should stay single player only. While Fallout 76 may have been a good concept in introducing multiplayer to fallout, the concept was and is poorly executed. What if there was a middle ground where the newer games are single player by default but you can invite friends to play with you in your own fallout world?

TL;DR: Fallout: New Vegas is arguably the best Fallout game and one of the greatest RPGs ever made because it emphasizes player choice, meaningful dialogue, memorable factions, replayability, satisfying combat, and strong roleplaying freedom. While the game has flaws like bugs, inconsistent karma and reputation mechanics, awkward companion quest triggers, and an unideal difficulty system, its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. A remaster should preserve what made New Vegas special while adding cut content, expanding customization, improving performance, and making the world feel more alive, and future Fallout games should build on New Vegas's RPG-focused design rather than moving away from it.

As a reminder, last year, PSA said they wanted to make the 570 a pump action and a semi auto off of the same receiver

So I am hoping that PSA will release an update soon on the semi auto version of the 570
