Social life

Im joining CC next year but not because of my high school transcripts instead due to financial issues. I’ll be open. I wanna go to parties and have all that fun alongside my academics but my question is will I get to experience that in a CC?

4.0 Gpa not enough?

Hey guys. I just finished my first year of cc. I have 32 credits completed and maintained a 4.0, but I feel like that’s not enough. I’m currently working on a short film aswell (I’m pursing a film degree) and am employed at universal studios. Is there anything more I could be doing to help me transfer? Lmk

Intro to Python Programming Comparison

Hello, I want to take a course like this over the summer and the issue is that I've been recommended 2 California community colleges to take the course at fully online however one of them is requiring me to go in person once to confirm my identity but it's about an hour away. The other option I have seems to have no problem letting me take the course however I've looked on ratemyprofessor and the professor seems to be no help at all, his videos are over 6 years old, and won't respond to you unlike the one at the college requiring me to do an in person visit. The professors from the college needing an in-person visit have been rated higher willingness to help and are kind so I'm indecisive. I want to ask if it'd be better to put in the effort to try and take the course at the further college going in person for my identity verification then doing it online, accepting the one that has low rated professors and try to learn the material myself, or maybe look for a different way to study the course as I'm doing it to gain experience with the subject before I fully go into university in the fall?

The Colleges: Miramar Community College (Supposedly Worse) / Mt San Jacinto College (Supposedly Better)

Also sorry if this isn't the right place to post this question but I want to ask for advice to see what someone else thinks.

Hi everyone,

You are recommended to take part in the 'AI Use in College Learning Survey.' This study will help us learn more about the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in your college learning process and the role that these tools shape your academic experiences.

This research is being conducted with a professor in Ocean County College.

This survey is voluntary; if you decide to take part in this survey, you will be asked to answer eighteen (18) questions (17 multiple-choice questions and one short response question), which will take around 10-15 minutes to complete.

You can find the survey here:

- By clicking this link AI Use in College Learning Survey, to access it directly.

- By copying and pasting this URL https://forms.gle/ZubsCJabNRVLpVhA7.

If you are not currently enrolled in any college or university, then you are not advised to take part in this survey. Nevertheless, you are encouraged to share this survey with an eligible respondent.

Before responding here are some important things to note before attempting the survey.

The questions included will be related to:

  • Your academic background (only includes your age group, academic level, and area of study)
  • Frequency of AI tools used and which tools you use
  • Uses of AI in your academic studies
  • Your opinions about the use of AI tools in learning and academic achievements
  • View about academic integrity and concerns related with the use of AI tools

Please note that:

  • All data you provided will be kept confidential and will not identify you in any way.
  • Only information related to your age, academic level, and your major will be collected.
  • Information including your email, name, gender, where you study, and other sensitive information will not be collected.
  • The software 'Google Forms' will require you to sign in for you to complete the survey; we will not collect your email addresses.
  • You have the option to skip certain questions and leave the survey at any time you want, and there will be no consequences for you if you decide not to answer the questions.
  • You will not be entered into any draws for prizes. There is no financial incentive to complete this survey.

We appreciate your time and cooperation.

Regards,

A student from Ocean County College

Schmoop and AI Detection - false flagging

At the end of the semester I was faced with a student who wrote a paper side by side with my tutors in the student success center. I ran it through MS Word -> Editor similarity detector (which is not an AI detector) as a check against the Canvas "Turn it in" add on ap.

I was led to the Schmoop website. It's a Cliff Notes type site and it's history extends before the use of AI, but also the way Schmoop is designed is flagging papers as AI or it's passages as simliair in AI plagiarism checks.

Example - "Girl" is a common piece of literature used. Schmoop has PAGES on "Girl" and because it claims it uses human writers to write in a "Fun, youth oriented voice" it is not only flagging content students right as copied, but it ALSO features common assignments in standard college level Lit curriculum.

It features quotes, discussions on all aspects of common assignments, and if Schmoop had parsed the last 15 years of the assignments based on "Girl" it would properly explain why their pages are so extensive and complete.

STILL because of it's content its triggering Turn It In. And Editor. And hitting students hard with accusations of plagiarism.

Anyone else see this?

Massasoit Community College

Massasoit Community College question - How do you get credits from your previous college to be accepted? I've already sent in my "official transcript" from my previous school, but that didn't have my Massasoit student ID associate with it. The registar's office sent me a link to submit a Credit Registration Form, but when I went to the link there is disclaimer that says, "The following Forms are not accepted and will not be processed if uploaded: Credit Registration Form" Does anyone know how to get this done?

Online checker says my essay is 89% AI

I did not use any AI for this essay, not even once. I found my sources through google and wrote it out in a planner before putting it together.

I always plug my essays into AI detectors cause I'm curious if they will turn up partially AI (and to double check nothing bad will happen.)

Two sites said 89% AI and one said zero. I'm just worried it might get flagged as it's a final report forth a 1/4th of my grade.

Why don't all states allow community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees?

I’ve been wondering why all states haven’t allowed community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees, especially since some states already do. In those states, community colleges can grant bachelor’s degrees in areas such as nursing, technology, education, etc., which improves affordability and flexibility for students.

In those states, community college bachelor’s programs are usually much cheaper than traditional universities. They often continue using community college tuition structures for upper-division courses, meaning students do not see the same sharp increase in cost that typically comes with switching to a four-year university. Even when there are small increases in costs for bachelor’s level coursework, the overall cost is still significantly lower than that of most public universities.

If community colleges could offer bachelor’s degrees, it would allow students to stay local and earn a full bachelor’s degree without needing to relocate or switch schools. In some areas, universities are not close by, so this would make access to four-year degrees more realistic. It would also reduce overall costs because students would avoid expenses like housing, meal plans, and other costs typically associated with traditional four-year universities. It would also benefit students who work, just like those who work while completing their associate’s degree, and those who have families or children because they are not able to relocate or commute long distances. Another benefit is that students could stay for all four years without needing to transfer after completing their associate’s degree. It would also help students who prefer in-person learning but are currently forced into online classes because they are not able to relocate or commute to the main campus.

Regional higher education centers can help which some states already have but they do not offer a wide range of degree programs. Because of that, some students still do not have the ability to stay local, since their specific degree or program is not offered at those locations.

Why hasn't every state considered letting community colleges offer bachelor’s degrees?

I graduate in THREE days! Then off for my BSN!

So after not being in school for over 10 years, I went back to school. I got my associates in science pre-nursing and I am going to 4 year top 10% school I graduated with a 3.96 GPA. And after everything I’ve been through in this life, I am so proud of myself. I had to do a little bit of a brag and show off my graduation dress and shoes. I’m so proud of myself and it took a lot of work to get here. Any other grads this week coming up? Also. so weird why is my school doing a graduation at 10 o’clock in the morning on Wednesday? Such a weird time to do a graduation. Anyways, congrats to the other graduates into your future endeavours. And anybody else transferring to a four year school? I’m doing an accelerated program so I will be graduating in December 2027. Here’s my graduation dress and shoes if anybody wants to appreciate it. Yes, this is a humble brag and I don’t care. Also. My Czech-American stole❤️

Attending CC or a 4 year uni

Hi everyone

I didn’t expect to be on this subreddit until lately. For most of high school, I have had decent grades and kept up with a 3.8 GPA. However, I made the mistake of overloading my junior year with APs and not putting in enough effort as needed to pass these classes. My mental health and care for academics have plummeted and I don’t know what to do. As a result, I’m wondering if I should first attend CC or a “mid” 4 year state university. My grades are As with the exception of a D-, B-, and a B with 2 weeks of school remaining.

I’m struggling with a few core subjects such as science and math when I want to major in a STEM field.( I am not a Cali resident) Was also wondering IF I should even go to CC.

There are some cons I’m considering with CC (not limited to):

  • Credits may be hard to transfer, and you might be held back a year which is something I oppose
  • Not as many opportunities and resources to gain research, internships, networking etc etc
  • Pls list any more if there is even a little I am trying to be open about this decision

Cons to a “mid” state school:

  • Costs more
  • Will probably regret committing to a state uni just because it’s a 4 year
  • Pls list any more if there is even a little I am trying to be open about this decision

Please let me know your thoughts and opinions, thanks everyone!

Should I take a break after completing my assiociates?

I've started I've not had my head in the game. I just went through the motions and impulsively joined classes, without considering structure. It's kinda how I handled stuff for a while, until recently where I smartened up a little and realized it was making things worse.

That and had trouble focusing/engaging, dealing with depression, keeping up practice with art (I feel more confidence in creating, but my skill is lacking), finding a job for a year(and being denied unemployment because I valued school time), and other personel issues that are a bit too sensitive.

But I've managed to pass so far. I just feel I haven't got any clue what I want to do.

I have one more class to complete, a CWE, which I intend to do this summer, and I did impuslively apply at a four year college for transfer for Fall. But now I'm wondering maybe I should get my life sorted with a gap year, maybe even consider other education options more critically.

I probably will, but I figure I need to weight my options and not be impulsive.

Online vs In Person Pre-Calc 2

So I may have to retake my precalc 2 class next semester (or over summer) in order to graduate on time. I need advice on whether or not I should do this online, as I had already designed my schedule around passing this class. Anyone have experience with online math courses? is it harder/easier? I have all the notes from this semester so I assume i'd be more prepared than I was but I want to make sure I make the right choice

WHERE AM I GOING TO GO? HELP ME

As the title suggests im legit lost as to where to go and wanted to get people's perspectives and thoughts on the following schools.

got into UCSB, UCSD, Tulane, Umiami, and Bentley, and am currently waiting for others as a transfer student coming into the junior year.

For the UC's I got in as a econ major, with UCSD specifically being International studies - econ.

For Tulane I got in for Finance, and the same thing applies for Umiami and Bentley.

Now for Bentley, I got 112k scholarship and for Umiami I got 15k academic year scholarship. I wanted to get people's opinions on these schools. Bentley seems like the smartest move since I'll be able to get my Bachelors and Masters in two years, along with it being covered by scholarship. Though, everywhere I've looked online about Bentley, there's legit nothing. Like why has no one said anything about the school, makes me nervous for no reason but like idk. also, food apparently is kinda meh and like, I literally have no other info to go off of for it. One of the features of Bentley University that stood out to me was their trading floor, which I thought was about as hands on as I'll get in a finance school from any of the schools I currently have.

For UCSD, I loved the campus, but like idk, I'm at Warren, so that kind of sucks, and everywhere I've looked online, there's no modern reviews on Warren college at UCSD. I've also heard that the school is socially dead, but at the same time I think socially, it'll probably just be what you make of it.

The one thing about Tulane is it's very big religiously, and I'm just not that religious personally! Also, when comparing it to other universities that it gets compared to like Duke, Rice, Vanderbilt, etc. I just don't think it holds up. Jobs and stuff will probably not think highly of it compared to these others

I'd really enjoy hearing everyone's thoughts on these schools, maybe your personal reviews or experiences, and any other info you could provide!

Need advice from a home schooler.

I’m planning on starting community college soon, but I’ve had a pretty rough academic background because of bad homeschooling and I honestly haven’t really been in formal classes for years. I’m starting tutoring before I enroll because I’m trying to rebuild my foundation, especially in math and writing.
I really want to succeed and maintain around a 3.8+ GPA, but I genuinely don’t know how realistic that is for someone in my situation. I never really learned how to write essays properly, study for tests, take notes, or do a lot of the things most students already know how to do. In math especially, I feel very behind.
For people who started college after educational gaps or weak schooling, was it actually possible to catch up and do well? Did professors expect everyone to already know how to write essays and take exams, or do community colleges help people build those skills? I’m worried that my lack of experience will make it impossible to get good grades, even if I work hard. What helped you succeed when you came in behind academically?

Deflection, Denial, and Deception

When the State Center Federation of Teachers (SCFT) delivered a historic unanimous vote of no-confidence against SCCCD Chancellor Dr. Carole Goldsmith and three of her top administrators in November 2025, Goldsmith's response was telling: not accountability, but a calculated playbook of deflection, denial, and deception. Hours before the vote, she staged a rushed retirement announcement widely seen by faculty and union leaders as a transparent attempt to drain momentum from the proceedings and give the Board of Trustees cover to avoid action. Rather than engage with the substance of faculty grievances, she dismissed the unprecedented vote as mere "political" and "bargaining" tactics, a claim the article dismantles by showing that only seven such votes have occurred across 73 California community college districts in the past five and a half years, making them anything but routine. Meanwhile, Board President Danielle Parra and other trustees compounded the damage by publicly praising Goldsmith and deflecting faculty concerns, even as evidence mounted of a district-wide culture of retaliation, corruption, nepotism, and fear under her watch.

Trying to get a program started at my local community college.

27m here. I’m interested in horticulture but my local community college doesn’t offer it so I’m trying to get a program started and whoever runs the email system is clearly trying to talk me out of it. Been going back and forth with them for hours. This is the latest email I got back.

“Thank you for your continued interest and passion for pursuing a horticulture program with Delaware Tech. We truly appreciate your enthusiasm and initiative in bringing forward ideas that could benefit both students and the community.

At this time, Delaware Tech does not currently offer a horticulture program, and the creation of a new academic program involves a very extensive review and approval process. This typically includes evaluating student demand, workforce and industry needs, available funding, curriculum development, faculty expertise, facilities and equipment requirements, as well as state and institutional approvals.
While individual interest and advocacy are certainly valuable parts of the conversation, the development of a new program would require broader institutional planning and long-term feasibility review.

We encourage you to continue exploring educational opportunities in horticulture and related fields that the College does offer. You are welcome to stop by campus and discuss this with an Advisor. No appointment is needed.

We appreciate you sharing your vision and interest with us.”
