While volunteering in my city's hospital, I noticed a box full of old electronics (read: it was crammed full of beige speakers, some cables mixed in, and some other things that weren't visible straight away). I assumed that I wouldn't be able to take anything due to their strict policies regarding ewaste, but I was in luck (I'm getting to that). A few minutes later, the cleaners came in. I was hooking up computers, so I didn't see that they took the box, put the items in a different box labeled ewaste, and tied that box. Not noticing the box, I asked the cleaners what happens with ewaste. As part of explaining, they pointed on the box (I went to check in the room where the stuff originally was, and it really was gone). I asked what I can do if there was some stuff that interested me. To that, they cut the string holding it closed, and they told me to take anything. (I then checked with the manager, and they let me take it if there are no hard drives.)
Now, let's get into what I actually got. It's sorted in imafe order, and the things that interest me the most are bold.
Genius SP-F350 speakers (they appear to have never been used, and they're in the box) (circa 2006 according to a search)
Dell AS501 soundbar speaker (2004 according to the quick guide, needs a Dell monitor with a 12V barrel jack, which I don't have yet, but I'll ask my school to write off a P1911, which has the jack)
Genius NetScroll + (yes, the space is there on the label) mouse (looks new from the bottom, and the PS/2 cable is still tied up, but it has grime on the top) (early 2000s) (I already have one, but having 2 is usually better, and ball mice absolutely rock)
Some sort of Logitech mouse (grabbed it because it has a Santander logo; fairly unassuming USB optical mouse otherwise)
Dell DVI cable (also looks unused) (if I do get a Dell P1911 to use the soundbar with, it'll be nice to have this Dell DVI cable to go with it)
HP power cable (looks new as well) (one can never have enough of those)
HP DisplayPort cable (clearly new, the bag isn't even torn) (I don't actually have a monitor with DisplayPort, but it will be helpful to have this cable when I wind up getting one) (I asked why it was thrown away, and the response I got was "we have a million of those")
HP printer cable (has to be new again, still sealed) (also used for USB on monitors with a built-in USB hub... like a certain Dell model that appears here way too many times, even though I don't even have it yet)
Ethernet cable (forgot the brand) (clearly new as well, but I get why they'd throw away a short patch cable of dubious quality; I took it anyway, and I think it is Cat. 5e, so it's alright)
Driver floppy for a CD-ROM drive and what looks like an analog audio cable (I'll image the floppy, scan the label, upload it to archive.org, and comment the link when I get home)
HP VGA cable (looks new) (can never have enough of those, again)
USB printer cable (brand unknown)
Power cable (brand unknown) (looks to have a bulge on the side that goes to the PSU, so I'm not sure if it's safe or actual ewaste)
I know, this isn't the most flashy or new stuff, but I'm happy that I got literally anything from this hospital after being told that they never sell any electronics when they don't need them anymore. Well, they still don't, as I got all of this for free, after all. No, I don't know if any of this works. By the way, the country is Czech Republic if you were wondering.
UPDATE: the big speakers are absolutely amazing! I wasn't expecting what are apparently budget speakers to sound that full.
I got about 70 lbs of old computer cords several are still at the job under the house I started going through cutting the plug ends off. This is about 25% of what’s left. Also 11 old monitors from the 90s and 1 packard bell mainly just a lot of old cords what do I do with this stuff no one buys this stuff here in middle Tennessee.
I recently found this PC that got threw out for e-waste recycling by my neighbors - saw it when I was walking on my street, asked them if I can grab it and 5 minutes later it was mine. It is rocking the Intel i5 6500, had no RAM but I put in 8GB DDR4 (it was before the RAMmagedon) 120GB SSD, terabyte HDD and a GTX 960 4GB! It works like new and it is now a Debian + CasaOS server. What do you think about my find?😄
Help me repurpose them please
Just now i went to recycle centre to recycle something & look what i found Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, Cracked screen, bad charging port & badly crack rear glass.
Yes the phone still works, i did factory reset & it works well, the display got big black dot but i don't mind it. So happy with this, gonna restore it & keep in my collection :)
Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700HQ
GPU: NVIDIA Quadro M600M
Storage: 512 GB SSD
RAM: 32 GB 2133 MT/s DDR4
OS: Windows 11 LTSC (later installed by me)
I found this put with the bilk and almost left it but decided to take it. The outer box looks absolutely terrible but the inner box containing the actual set was somehow still sealed with the tape on and all. I did unfortunately dumbly cut off the tape which probably tanked it's value to see whats inside but its had everything still in its plastic packaging. Im currently contemplating weather I should sell it as it is currently or open it up and have fun with it on clone hero. For context im under the legal drinking age and dont own a ps3, just a wii.
Taking apart a few old tvs and came across this. I’m aware that they are essentially light bulbs but does anyone know what to do with them? This tv was working but I found it on the side of the road for free. This is the first tv I’ve taken apart with these inside. I think it’s the only part of this tv that I’d feel bad about breaking or throwing away. (I refine PMs as a hobby)
I’ve been quietly building an app called Origin Search and wanted to get some honest thoughts from people who are into old stuff, antiques, history, restoration, abandoned places, old cars, etc.
The idea came from seeing old houses, rusty objects, random antiques, and damaged old photos and always wondering: what was this thing originally? or what did it look like when it was new?
The app is super simple. You just scan or upload a photo of something — an old item, rusty object, antique, damaged photo, old house/building, car, pretty much anything.
It will:
• Try to identify what it is
• Restore it visually to what it likely looked like in its best/new condition
• Give a history/background on it
• Estimate the value when possible
One thing I’ve actually found useful is restoring really rusty or damaged items just to figure out what they even are before trying to research them.
Still building and improving accuracy, but curious — what would you use something like this for? Old family photos? Antique hunting? Forgotten buildings? Estate sale finds?
I am trying to expand my home lab setup because I need a deeper four post rack cabinet to mount a couple of enterprise servers I recently acquired. Buying new enclosures online is proving to be incredibly expensive due to the massive freight shipping fees required to deliver heavy steel frames to a residential address.
I know that regional asset recovery firms and commercial liquidators constantly clear out old data centers and corporate server rooms, but I am not sure if those types of outfits ever sell individual pieces of hardware directly to the public or if they only deal in bulk scrap contracts with major corporations.
Have any of you had success reaching out directly to corporate e-waste liquidators to purchase surplus racks, blanking panels, or rails? Or is it generally better to just wait around on local classified sites hoping an old system administrator dumps their enterprise gear for cheap?
Screen is pretty scratched but you can’t normally notice it and it runs just fine for light gaming I paid about 40 bucks to throw in a 1050 soldered on motherboard and new heatsink also has 8gb of ram and 128 gb of storage (might upgrade both soon)
This is just part of the haul I got today from one house. The best part is, I didn’t even have to solicit it. This stuff comes to me and people reach out asking me to come and get it.
With the matching 5 disc cd changer too
Someone this morning dropped this off. Never seen a case like this one before ! Thinking of using it for my e waste only build ;-) 1000w power supply sounds nice
Hey guys, If you’ve read my last post you’d know that yesterday was my first time binning! Today I went back to that same target with some scrap stuff I had and as I was tossing it in the bin I snagged myself a macbook! Model a1465! (Does anybody know the newest Mac OS version this thing can run without slowing down or lagging? Not really interested in Linux.) I saw its MagSafe charger in the bin but as I was gonna grab it the store manager came and told me I couldn’t recycle stuff with the bin lid open :( unfortunately that’s 2 different generations of Mac chargers I need now so as I’m typing this I’m heading to the thrift store to see if I can finely a charger for either of the macs! Thanks for reading :)
