Confused between JNU MA in International Relations and MBA – Need Honest Advice

Hi everyone,

I'm currently in the final year of my B.Tech and have developed a strong interest in geopolitics, international affairs, and foreign policy. Because of this, I'm seriously considering pursuing an MA in International Relations from JNU.

However, almost all of my friends are advising me to prepare for an MBA instead. Their argument is that an MBA offers much better placements, higher salaries, and more career opportunities, while they believe an MA in IR has limited job prospects unless you're preparing for UPSC.

This has left me genuinely confused.

I would really appreciate it if current JNU students, alumni, or anyone pursuing IR could share their experiences.

Some questions I have:

- What are the placement and job opportunities after an MA in International Relations from JNU?

- What kind of roles do graduates usually get?

- Are think tanks, research organizations, consulting firms, NGOs, or international organizations realistic career options?

- If someone is not interested in UPSC, is the degree still worth pursuing?

- Looking back, would you still choose JNU IR over an MBA?

I'm not choosing a degree only for money, but I also want a stable and fulfilling career. Any honest advice, personal experiences, or career insights would mean a lot.

Thank you!

Can I get into JNU with a score of 309/500 in CUET UG?

I am a female from general category (NOT from Quartile 1 or Quartile 2) and have scored a 309.06 out of 500. Which language programs am I likely to get into with this score in first admission list itself once the depravation points are added?

MTECH after an Msc. What are the possibilities?

I'm currently a student in Bsc Zoology and while my first preference is studying well enough to get a good college in masters and then go down the research route, the possibility of doing an Mtech after msc is also looking promising.

I know that for core engineering courses I won't be eligible in top colleges but for Mtech in interdisciplinary ones, for eg Mtech in Nanoscience at JNU, I do stand eligible provided I clear the cutoff. I want to know if I will be eligible for placements provided I've got a biology background?

Are there any other course+college combinations that you can suggest that accept biology background people?

Is this a common pathway, has anyone done this from biology?

My qualifications:

X - 96%, XII - 90%, Bsc Zoology second year

French at jnu, reasonable?

So im aspiring for bms at sscbs, but I don't think I can clear the cutoff this year, I'm thinking of keeping JNU French as a second option (basically take a partial drop). I got 74.8% (including the deprivation points), OBC NCL F

I've studied French for 5yrs in school, so I figured that the first year would be somewhat easier for me

But I'm still unaware of how demanding the curriculum can be

My other option will be enrolling in the part time french course at Hansraj for a year, this will give me a reason to get out of the house while also giving me decent time to focus on CUET prep and other relevant skill building (but the downside is that I really want to get out of the house as soon as possible)

So my cousin got 353 marks including deprivation points. She is from the UR category. Her preference list is

1-Spanish

2-French

3-Korean

Please be straightforward 🥹 and tell if she could get Spanish? Pls don't give false hopes, we will be more than happy to listen to the most possible thing for her. And plan accordingly.

Do I even have a shot for Japanese?

I'm a general (F), did my 10th nd 12th from *Q2*

•Eng: 195.936

•Gat: 148.098

That gives a total of ~344 (idk to what places they round up to for scores)

Also, do I have a chance for Mandarin?

I'll be grateful for the help

Confused between Political Science (Hons.) and Sociology (Hons.)

I'm filling my DU CSAS preferences and can't decide between Political Science (Hons.) and Sociology (Hons.). I genuinely enjoy both subjects.

My long-term goal is UPSC CSE and later a master's from JNU.

A few questions:

Which course helps more with UPSC preparation?

Does DU's Political Science syllabus overlap well with CSE?

If I take Sociology (Hons.), is choosing Sociology as my UPSC optional a good idea?

For JNU, which is a better path: M.A. in International Relations or M.A. in Sociology?

Would love to hear from DU/JNU students or UPSC aspirants.

Thanks!
