It was left off of every setlist in 2024 and 2025
Priest were already huge long before Maiden broke through. Up until around 1990, both bands were extremely successful. Then both went through similar phases: two less well-received albums with new singers, followed by the return of Dickinson and Halford.
But while Maiden seemed able to pick up almost exactly where they left off at their peak, Priest have also had a solid comeback, just on a noticeably lower commercial level. I don’t really understand why that is.
Musically, they feel absolutely comparable in terms of quality and consistency. Both have a similar number of iconic songs and landmark albums, and they clearly appeal to the same audience.
Is it ultimately just branding and imagery—like Eddie as a strong visual mascot on album covers and merch—that made the difference?
Sometimes I think about the K.K. thing and how that went down, and it seems a little sad that it never came back around. You kind of hoped that one day they might work it all out and pick up again. It didn't have to go that way. Sort of like that baffling explanation about how Rob ended up out of the band in the '90s because of a miscommunication or something. When you're all in a band for decades, fix your issues. Don't let them metastasize like a cancer.
Say what you will about Metallica and its use of a life coach, it worked, and ironed out a lot of internal interaction issues that kept the band going (I mean save for Jason Newsted, who decided it was weak to seek that outside help and opted out). Maybe Priest should have mediated its differences? Or maybe better management could have steered them all through that crisis better. Who can say?
Was out looking at vinyls today. I saw a random box of them under the newer releases and found a 1984 pressing of Defenders of the faith. Just have to clean it up and see how it plays.
I don't get it. Is it, like, a metaphor?
I will be seeing Priest in Pula, Croatia in less than 2 months.
Wondering how hard is it to get first row at their concerts these days? How early should I queue?
Does anyone here know if the best hits album (vinyl) has Hellion included? Hellion and Electric eye is pretty much a one package deal, I mean c'mon you cant have one without the other. It just lists Electric Eye by itself, thanks.
This is not serious, it's a stupid meme I made. Enjoy.
Side 2 of this album is monumental. Dissident Aggressor is Priest at their heaviest. Simon Phillip's drum work is beyond compare. I'd be interested to hear what you think? I know people really go for Painkiller, but give me Sin After Sin or Unleashed in the East any day.
