My First and Last Ozzfest (2004 and 2010 - both in Camden, NJ)

With Ozzfest all but confirmed to return as a one-day festival at Aston Villa Football Club in Birmingham, UK, I think back to how many incredible lineups I saw at Ozzy's traveling festival between 2004 and 2010 (the only one between those years I didnโ€™t go to was 2008's one day event in Texas).

My very first Ozzfest was in 2004 at the then Tweeter Center in Camden, NJ (Aug. 26) I'll never forget how blown away I was by both Judas Priest and Slayer. The highlight of the night, though, was when Bill Ward came out and delivered the unfortunate news that Ozzy was ill and couldn't perform that evening. After a few seconds of boos, the crowd became stunned when Ward announced that Black Sabbath would be performing with Rob Halford filling in. What proceeded was an amazing and historical set - with Halford absolutely crushing Ozzy-era classics.

6 years later I'd attend my last Ozzfest at the same venue (rebranded to Susquehanna Bank Center). Ironically Halford was playing with his solo band on this tour's edition - but he didn't need to fill in for anyone, as Ozzy closed out the night with a rousing solo set (after Motley Crue played a surprising fun, bare-bones set... well, as bare-bones as a Motley Crue show can be). The highlight of the day, though, was witnessing a tornado briefly blow through - forcing Black Label Society to cancel their second stage headlining set (though somehow not canceling the rest of the day...).

There's a ton more stories I can recall from both metal festivals... but that's for another time ๐Ÿ˜‰

Who was the best band you ever saw play Ozzfest? Favorite lineup? Share in the comments below, and stay tuned for more things to come from this space (including stories from festivals like this)!

RIP Frank Beard - Remembering Seeing ZZ Top at Sea Hear Now (Asbury Park, NJ - Sept. 13, 2025)

Sad to hear that Frank Beard, drummer of ZZ Top, has passed away. It was literally just a few months ago that I finally got to see the legendary Texas blues rock trio live - on the Asbury Park beach at Sea Hear Now (Sept. 13, 2025). The death is even sadder when you remember that just a few weeks prior marked the five year anniversary of Dusty Hill's passing.

My condolences to Frank's family, loved ones and fans. Check out some pictures I took during ZZ Top's set at Sea Hear Now in this clip. Also check out video I took of Phish surprising fans at their 93rd Madison Square Garden show with a blazing cover of "La Grange":

That Time I Saw Oderus Urungus' Viking Funeral and GWAR's Return at GWAR-B-Q (Hadadโ€™s Lake - Richmond, Va., Aug. 2014).

12 years ago, i spent an emotional weekend at GWAR-B-Q - held months after the sudden death of Dave Brockie at Hadadโ€™s Lake in Richmond, Virginia. Honestly, I could spend hours reliving memories from this particular weekend - I can still vividly remember the sight of seeing Oderus Urungus' costume burnt to a crisp during a fitting viking funeral, and how the emotions ran high for everyone as GWAR returned onstage.

I tried to put some thoughts down in writing via Substack (link below) - including stories involving Lamb Of God's Randy Blythe and former members of GWAR, but hope to share more memories from that weekend at a Virginia waterpark in the near future. In the meantime, check out my post via Substack for a start (and this clip for some photos of the weekend):

Slash Plays "Anastasia" at Wellmont Theater (Montclair, NJ - Oct. 1 2018)

Slash made a special appearance during "The Lost Boys" musical on Broadway this week. While I can't say I've seen the legendary Guns N' Roses guitarist on Broadway, I have seen him live with GN'R and with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators - including at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ, on Oct. 1, 2018. Seeing Slash in such an intimate setting (well, intimate for Slash) was amazing in and of itself, but as a fan of his solo work, hearing songs like "Anastasia" was especially amazing (plus, the entire band sounded fantastic - seriously looking forward to Slash and Myles hitting the road together again soon). This particular show was especially special as I got to go with my nephews - both in their pre-teens at the time, and both still big fans of Slash.

Deep Purple and Judas Priest at PNC Bank Arts Center (Holmdel, NJ - Sept. 6, 2018)

Ritchie Blackmore joined Deep Purple onstage last night (Aug. 12, 2026) for the first time in more than 30 years at the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY - joining the band for an encore of "Smoke On The Water." I never got to see Deep Purple play with their influential founding guitarist, but I did see them when their co-headlining tour with Judas Priest came to the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ, on Sept. 6, 2018. And nothing against Deep Purple... but let's just say it's nearly impossible to follow Rob Halford and the almighty Metal Gods (seriously, not sure how any band would want to play AFTER Judas Priest).

Metallica Plays the Black Album in its Entirety at Orion Music + More in Atlantic City (June 24, 2012)

What else can be said about Metallica's 'Black Album' that hasn't already been said since its release 35 years ago today (Aug. 12)? It's such a massive, monumental album in rock history (not just metal) - one I gained even more appreciation for after seeing Metallica play it in its entirety (from back to front) at the Orion Music + More festival in Atlantic City, NJ (June 24, 2012). I got to cover the entire weekend for Metal Insider (hence the media wrist band seen at the end of this clip), and while I was pretty much burnt to a crisp by the time Metallica took the stage for their second headlining set of the festival, I was in awe of how each song off the Black Album sounded so powerful live. Admittedly it's such a popular album that for a while I took it for granted, but that special show proved why the Black Album remains one of the best selling albums of all time.

Which album would you love to see performed from start to finish? Which albums have you already seen performed in its entirety? Share in the comments below, and stay tuned for more things to come from this space (including stories from concerts like this)!

That Time I Met My Now Wife After Seeing Black Sabbath Live in Philadelphia

13 years ago (Aug. 10), I saw Black Sabbath at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. As great as the Godfathers of Metal were that night, it was what happened the following day that stands out to me... the morning after, I got a DM from a girl I had been chatting with on a dating app. She asked if I was free that night to grab dinner. Any other person I would've probably used the excuse of being "too tired and soar after seeing a concert" to go out (and admittedly I was both - I had traveled back n forth between Philly and my apartment in Jersey City for the show, so basically across the entire state of NJ, and I headbanged so much during the show that I was completely drained), but I didn't want to pass on any chancr to finally meet her. And thank goodness I went... 13 years later, we're about to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary, have raised two incredible kids (shout out to my twins!), and have gone to so many concerts together that I've lost count. So yeah, you could say that the day after I saw Black Sabbath live, I met my go-to concert buddy for life...

Happy 50th birthday to Ben Gibbard! Crazy that it's been just over a year (Aug. 9 to be exact) that I saw Ben and Death Cab for Cutie open for My Chemical Romance at MetLife Stadium... a slightly larger than normal venue to see these indie rock darlings play in, I assume.

Metallica Plays "Enter Sandman" Live at Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia - May 12, 2017)

Even after 35 years, seeing Metallica play "Enter Sandman" never gets old. Case in point - here's the band closing out their show at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia back on May 12, 2017. Granted, this particular performance benefited from the unbelievable fireworks display above the massive stage, plus a sold out stadium singing along to one of the most recognizable metal anthems of all time. I also always look back fondly at this show, as I went with my cousin - we've shared a close bond since kids because of our love for bands like Metallica, so getting to see them live with him is something I'll always be grateful for.

One Year Ago Today - My Chemical Romance Receives Key to Belleville and plays "Welcome to the Black Parade" at MetLife Stadium

Seeing My Chemical Romance live was always on my concert bucket list, which I finally got to cross off Aug, 9, 2025. And what could've made seeing them play 'The Black Parade' in its entirety nearly 20 years after its release even more powerful? Seeing them do it in their home state of NJ - more specifically MetLife Stadium. The mayor of Belleville even came out during the show to present Gerard Way and band the key to their hometown!

Watch Mayor Michael Melham present My Chemical Romance the key to Belleville in its entirety onstage at MetLife Stadium, and the beginning of MCR playing "Welcome to the Black Parade."

Wilco Plays "Jesus, Etc." at Tanglewood Music Center (Aug. 12, 2008)

Hard to believe its been nearly 18 years since I saw AND met Wilco at the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, Mass (Aug. 12, 2008). I was dating someone in college who was such a huge fan of the band that she became friends with someone who worked at the drum company who sponsored drummer Glenn Kotche. That contact not only got us and our friend seats a few rows away from the stage, but also passes to the after show party - where we got to meet the entire band (except Jeff Tweedy). They were all super nice guys, and getting to chat with them moments after such an incredible show.

This also marked the only time I've been to the world renowned Tanglewood - such a cool spot to see a talented group like Wilco (or any band for that matter).

Dethklok Live at House Of Blues - Boston, Mass. - Oct. 27, 2009

20 years ago this week (Aug. 6), Metalocalypse premiered on Adult Swim. The animated series (which asked the question 'What if a death metal band was so larger than life that they were more powerful than most countries") was so popular that co-creator Brendon Small created a live version of Dethklok. I got to see Dethklok in the flesh (well, sorta) twice - the first time at the House Of Blues in Boston (Oct. 27, 2009) during their co-headlining tour with Mastodon. Brendon assembled a ridiculously talented group of musicians (drummer Gene Hoglan, bassist Bryan Beller, and guitarist Mike Keneally) to help bring the songs to life while classic moments from the show displayed on a screen behind them. The show perfectly showcased how funny Metalocalypse was and how intricate and melodically brutal the music was (seriously, Dethklok's songs are WAY better than they should be).

Funny side story - I had just started writing for Metal Insider around this time, and had been promised a spot on the guest list for the show. However, when me and my friend arrived we discovered no tickets were left for us at will call, and the show was sold out. We drove from our college campus in Worcester to Boston, so we were determined to make sitting in traffic worth it - so we scrambled to first find an ATM to grab cash (ah, the days before digital payment options...) and then find someone willing to sell us tickets outside the venue. Luckily we were successful, but as a result missed High On Fire's opening set and walked into the House Of Blues just as Converge were playing their last song. Well, at least we got to see Dethklok and Mastodon ๐Ÿ˜†

The Closest I Got to Seeing the Ramones Live - Marky Ramone with Andrew W.K. in NYC

30 years ago today (Aug. 6), the Ramones played their final concert. The closest I ever got to see the Ramones live was when Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg toured with Andrew W.K. I was actually working in AWK's PR team at the time, so I got to go to their live debut at Santos Party House in NYC (May 13, 2013), as well as see them at Irving Plaza later that same year (as seen in this clip). Marky and the band sounded awesome, and AWK did a great job bringing classics like "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" and more to life (without trying to be a carbon copy of Joey).

Did you get to see the Ramones live before they said "adios amigos"? How about Marky with AWK? Share in the comments below, and stay tuned for more things to come from this space (including stories from concerts like this)!

Them Crooked Vultures live at House Of Blues (Boston, Mass. - Oct. 11, 2009)

Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age kicked off their North American tour last night, which brings back memories of seeing Them Crooked Vultures live at the House Of Blues in Boston on Oct. 11, 2009. Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, and John Paul Jones' supergroup was barely a few weeks old when they launched a small run of club shows - they hadn't even formally released a song before taking the stage in Boston (their sole self-titled album would come out the following month, but a single wasn't released until a few weeks after the concert). So me and my friend essentially went into this show blind, though fully optimistic that a supergroup with THESE icons would not disappoint (and at the very least it would be an incredible experience to see them in such an intimate rock club like the House Of Blues) ... and they sure as hell lived up to the expectations. I'll never forget being in awe as they blazed through each song - clearly drawing from their Led Zeppelin, Kyuss and Nirvana roots to produce what I'd imagine Cream on steroids would sound like. But what was more impressive than the songs themselves was how much fun the three of them appeared to be having on stage - as if they were three longtime friends who'd been playing their entire lives together but finally got to play in front of people. It was truly a magical evening I still can't believe I witnessed.

20 Years Ago - I Saw Ozzy Osbourne, System Of A Down, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold + More at Ozzfest

20 years ago, I went to Ozzfest at the then Tweeter Center in Camden, NJ, and witnessed a lineup that can only be described as "holy crap"! On the mainstage was Ozzy Osbourne, System Of A Down, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Hatebreed, Lacuna Coil and Dragonforce (plus Black Label Society, Atreyu, Unearth, and more on the second stage).

This particular stop on the top was especially noteworthy, as it was one of the few stops where Ozzy headlined the main stage on the tour. As you may remember - this edition of Ozzfest was initially being promoted as the first to not feature Ozzy, with SOAD being billed as the primary headliner. Then Ozzy was added to the second stage on select dates. As cool as it might've been to see Ozzy in the daytime on the smaller second stage, I was just ecstatic to finally see Ozzy's solo set.

It's also mind blowing that I got to see THIS lineup - featuring bands arguably at their peak. Also remember getting to meet Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil near the second stage - for the life of me cannot find the picture I took with her (proof that this show was pre-social media ๐Ÿ˜†).

5 Years Ago Today - Green Day and Weezer at Citi Field (Queens, NY - Aug. 4, 2021)

5 years ago today (Aug. 4), I went to my first concert post-pandemic. Seeing Green Day, Weezer and The Interrupters that day at Citi Field in Queens, NY, marked the first time I had seen live music after a year and a half gap. And while all three bands sounded amazing, it was also possibly the most nervous I ever felt at a concert. Keep in mind, while bands were starting to hit the road again around this time after more than a year of not being able to play for normal size crowds, COVID was still causing chaos. Case in point - Fall Out Boy were supposed to play but pulled out hours before showtime as someone in the band got exposed to COVID (hence why Rivers Cuomo covered "Sugar We're Goin Down", as seen in the second half of the clip). So I went into this concert hesitant and questioning if going to a concert was the right thing to do (another thing to note - my twins weren't even a year old at the time, so going out and about in large crowds seemed even riskier for me). And as hard as it is to admit, I left that concert even more unsure and questioned my desire to keep going to concerts... thankfully a few weeks later, my experience at Sea Hear Now reignited my love for live music and reminded me of what I found d so special about going to concerts... but that's a story for another time ๐Ÿ˜‰
