1986 Peugeot Sitting Bull (Work in Progress)

My pride and joy, my magnum opus. 40 years old and still snapping necks. As far as I can tell there are 4 other ones of these known to still exist and of the 5 (including mine) I have - by absolutely miles - the best original paintwork. I'll treat her good.

This was out on it's cursory ride and I have a few learnings:
• OEM Setpost clamp is shameful. I'll need some carbon paste and possibly even a shim to get this properly tight.
• Brooks Saddles are worth the hype.
• 52 x 18 is hopeless even if you have strong legs. I'll dial back to 48 and see how that feels before going smaller.
• This thing stops on a dime - front brakes are unnecessary.
• 520mm Bullmoose bars are not eat to do a bunny-hoop on?

Anyways, hope you all enjoy.

The Journey of my Marin Venezia

Story Time! Don’t read if you’re not a fan of expansive narratives… This bike was generously donated to me by a widow who came to my place of work (Play It Again Sports) and when it came into my possession I knew I had to make it my own with some sort of special custom build. It cleaned up beautifully and the original spec with all silver parts (Campagnolo Veloce 9 speed with 20h Scirocco wheels) looked absolutely classy. In the back of my head though, I was thirsting for some modern carbon parts and weird personal flair, so I decided to base the build around Super Record 11 speed mechanical. I sourced a very affordable and hardly touched 10 speed Record long cage derailleur which matched the 11 speed cable pull, purchased a 13 speed Super Record crank with 12 speed chainrings, and also got a featherweight Prestacycle cassette. The monstrosity of a cockpit (consisting of a currently unobtainable Nitto 31.8mm clamp quill stem and Lambda X-Wing bars) came off my 1985 Specialized Allez. Shout out to Recycled Cycles for the $25 fenders currently on this beast :) During my first shakedown ride I dented both Scirocco rims on the gnarly metal lip of a bridge, and after much mourning I wisely decided to get an arguably more “grail” wheelset—an 8 speed 16 spoke Zonda pair. In a completely unproven and luck-based procedure, I managed to swap the 9 speed freehub body off the cartridge bearing Scirocco wheelset onto the ball-bearing Zonda wheelset. With that, and the purchase of a Berk saddle from a benevolent fellow roadie and bike shop employee, the latest iteration of the Venezia was complete. My favorite part of this bike is that it contains 8,9,10,11,12, and 13 speed Campagnolo parts. Not many people can claim something so lofty and ridiculous for their own bikes. Feel free to ask me any questions!

My ‘87 SR500

This bike was my uncle’s, hence the Steve decal I put on the top tube. I saw this bike over a decade ago hanging in his garage, loved the minimal design and have been into Cannondales ever since. He passed away a few years ago, and recently my aunt and cousins gifted me the bike (as seen in the second pic) to have and work on. I’ve been trying for the last few months to modernize and make the bike my own (tastefully I hope)
It’s still a work in progress but I’m loving how it’s come so far.

The most recent mod is the Vuelta wheelset, which I picked up off marketplace just yesterday. This also allowed me to finally switch from the freewheel on the original Wolber Alpine rims to cassette, still 7 speed though as I don’t want to take away too much of the ‘80s character. Plus I find 2x7 to be enough for the riding I do.

The only other major modification I’m currently planning is to swap the crankset with something newer. I have a pair of FSA chainrings taken off a new Cannondale SuperSix, and I’m waiting on the crank and BB to come in the mail.

My 1987 Miele Aries 400 resto-mod build

Did full powder coat, decals, 1x9 conversion, new bb and headset, polished the sungino cranks and other components as close to chrome as I could, did Italian colored lines for some added flair and its sitting on panaracer dart classics for tires! Comment if you wanna see the bikes original colors and condition!

Restoration

I’m looking for information about this bicycle and suggestions on restoration. Alan brand with a “champion del mondo” sticker from 1976.

So far I’ve found that this line of frames was made as a sort of novelty boast for the brands success in numerous world championship titles.

What I can’t seem to find is if these bikes were produced as fixed gears or if they were originally multi-speed.

I’d like to get this bike back into a useable condition and preferably as a 3-speed. I don’t intend to race it but it would be the perfect small commute bike for my area.

Any help on cost estimate for the gear conversion and restoration as well as general information about the frame will be greatly appreciated.

2006 Cannondale CAAD8 Restomod

Picked up this CAAD8 a couple years ago, recently made a few tweaks and loving it more than ever.

I rode exclusively fixed gear for years and this is my first "real" road bike. This thing rips, super nimble to ride--way more fun than you'd expect on 20 year bike with budget parts. Weighs in at just under 20 lbs.

Build details:

-Frame: 2006 Cannondale CAAD8 Made in USA (handlebars, seatpost and fork are stock)
-Wheels: H PLUS SON Archetype (Shimano 105 Hubs, Conti GP5000s)
-Brakes: Shimano Tiagra rim brakes
-Groupset: Microshift Sword Black 1 x 9 (11-42t Microshift Advent cassette)
-Crankset: Senicx PR3 (42t, 165mm)
-Pedals: Shimano PD-M520
-Saddle: Fizik Arione
-Stem: Uno (110mm)

Project Cuevas has hit a snag. Thought I had it close until I did a shake down ride. The 9 speed conversion seems like it needs a narrower bottom bracket. Chainline is ugly!

Specialized Sirrus Triple (1991)

My first restomodded Specialized Sirrus Triple

Gave it a Sram Force 2x10 groupset from a donor bike (ironic, I turned it into a double).
Wheelset is a Mavic Ksyrium Equipe
3T Carbon seat post
3T Aluminium handlebar & stem
Custom 3D printed downtube cable stops, front derailleur clamp spacer, valve caps and bar end plugs.

Not sure I like the handlebars & stem with the white details, but it will stay on for now.

Upgrades on my first road bike (Batavus Criterium)

This was the bike that got me into cycling and I decided to completly rebuild the frame. Learned a lot during the build. Now I run:

• Shimano 105 R7000 group/brakes; 11-30 casette
• Zrace RX2 52-36 crankset with Zrace BSA-Road BB
• CSC 60mm carbon wheels (R13 hub)
• BLB Lil quill stem with 38cm modern geometry handlebars (26mm) that i found on Ali
• Ryet 3D printed saddle
• Conti GP5000 tires with TPU tubes

I also found out that external cam quick release scewers that came out of the box with the wheelset where not sufficient for keeping the rear wheel centered in my horizontal dropouts. I updgraded to Shimano Ultegra internal cam scewers. It is a blast to ride

My 1st build cannondale R800 CAAD5

1st full budget build restomod on my 2002 Cannondale CAAD 5 R800.
Botched the bar tape wrapping 😭 and figuring out how to set the derailleurs still a bit of a learning curve but it has been a fun build. Feels even more lighter and stiff, can’t wait to take this hog on a real ride.
Last picture is of the old stock set up

2005 Bianchi Mega Pro Lite restomod. Modern performance without losing its character

I’ve always liked the idea of giving older bikes a second life instead of replacing them.

This started as a 2005 Bianchi Mega Pro Lite, and rather than doing a complete rebuild, I upgraded it gradually over time with the goal of making it ride like a modern road bike while keeping the look and feel that made me buy it in the first place.

Current build:

  • Frame: 2005 Bianchi Mega Pro Lite (aluminium)
  • Fork: Bianchi full carbon fork
  • Groupset: Campagnolo Veloce 10-speed
  • Brakes: Shimano Dura-Ace calipers + Shimano R55C4 carbon pads
  • Wheelset: Superteam 50 mm carbon clinchers (tubeless-ready)
  • Tyres: Continental Ultra Sport III 700×25
  • Tubes: RideNow TPU
  • Stem: Shimano 70 mm
  • Seatpost: Elita One carbon
  • Saddle: Ryet carbon

Instead of spending €4–6k on a new bike, I wanted to see how far I could take a classic aluminium frame with carefully chosen upgrades.

The biggest surprise wasn’t the weight. It was how much the bike changed on the road. The carbon wheels, modern tyres and improved fit made it feel far more responsive and stable than I expected, while it still has the classic Bianchi ride quality.

There are still a few finishing touches left, but I tried to keep the upgrades subtle rather than turning it into something it isn’t.

If you were building on this frame today, what would you have done differently?

How to determine if my ride is a good candidate for resto-mod?

Context: Despite picking this up back in 2019 (Craigslist, $150) it’s essentially been my commuter for school all this time and thus I’m still quite new when it comes to bicycles and their components and care. I’m at the point now however where I have a bit more free time (and money) and would like to try getting into cycling more seriously and beyond just riding to/from work.

Initially, I had figured I’d need to upgrade to a newer bike for the road (I’m also hoping to pick up a cheap local gravel bike) but then I came across this subreddit. And the ethos is quite appealing. The part I don’t have the knowledge to asses is, and that I’m hoping someone here could help determine, is this old Viner bike actually a platform that would be reasonable to attempt a resto-mod on?

u/goovenli — 13 days ago

don't know if it's resto but it's mod. Trek Madone Ultegra

she got some new shoes, new handlebar and Shimano 6703 shifters
