Washington DC Running
Looking for a place down near SW where I can run sprints uphill during the weekdays.
MVT ➡️ Curtis Trail
First time poster here so why not make a long post?? Lol
I'm currently training for my first marathon. Yesterday was my peak run of the training block, 20 miles. I felt pretty good going into yesterday's run. Two weeks ago, I negative split my 15-miler, and last week, I negative split 18-miler.
My marathon course has a notorious hill at miles 22-24, 200(ish) feet in gain. To prepare, in addition to strength training, I incorporate hill segments into my long runs, which is pretty easy to do in DC. One of my favorite routes is: Capitol Hill ➡️ Mall ➡️ Lincoln ➡️ MVT (north towards Rosslyn). I've ran this route severaltimes so I know MVT is slightly uphill towards Rosslyn. However, 20 miles is my longest run ever, so I didn't know what's beyond Rosslyn. I always assumed the trail would flatten out.
I continue onto Curtis Trail and it did NOT flatten out. Why did no one warn me??? 😂😂😂 It continued almost entirely uphill until it ended at the W&O intersection. Garmin clocked the total elevation gain around 900 ft, with most of it coming between mile 6-11.
And then I had to turn around back down that MOUNTAIN to get back to DC. Very humbling run. I never recovered from the Rosslyn and Curtis Trail Mountain and did not negative split the run, despite the second half of the run being mostly downhill.
I'm still in good spirits despite not meeting my goals for the 20-miler. But I just wanted to ask why did no one warn me about Curtis Trail 😂😂😂
Capitol Hill Classic - Good Luck!
Enjoy great weather and a great 10k/ 3k / fun run tomorrow & see you out there! My first time finally in town for it in recent years and I can't wait
Favorite long (10+) mile runs
Hi! What’s everybody’s favorite long run routes? I often do an out and back on beach drive, CCT, or rock creek exercise trail to mt Vernon! Looking for new routes once marathon running starts up
Update on the EPP golf course changes that had all us DC runners in a frenzy last week

Looks like the road around the course is not going away like that really bad AI mockup implied
To Justin
To Justin that decided to run the entire span on the DC border this past weekend, kudos to you!! 👏👏
Got on my app to find that you took the entire city in one run. Now to just slowly start to claim territory again. Keep on running!
Detour Coming for Gravelly Point Construction
The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) is putting a temporary detour in place as part of the Long Bridge Project, the 1.8-mile rail overhaul that will eventually relieve one of the worst freight and passenger bottlenecks on the East Coast. The detour goes into effect around May 22nd and stays in place until construction wraps in 2030.
Baltimore or MCM?
Hey all! I just completed the Frederick Half Marathon last weekend and have decided what better time to tackle my lifelong goal of running a full marathon than right now. I live in the DMV and it seems Baltimore and the Marine Corps are the most popular local options. I was hoping for some insight into both from those who have run them. Here are factors that are important to me:
-How chaotic are the start and finish? Specifically at the MCM. I know myself and the last thing I need is to stress about getting there on time, my wife and two young children navigating the course to cheer me on, and finding my way back after the race concludes. Running my first full will have me anxious enough 😆.
-I’m not super concerned about hills, but I’ve read very conflicting reports on Baltimore. Some say it’s extremely hilly and others say it’s mild.
-Crowd energy is awesome and I certainly feed off that, but sightseeing keeps me distracted when I’m wearing down. If both are scenic, awesome, but if one is WAY better, please enlighten me.
If there’s anything I’m missing, please let me know! Or if there’s another nearby full that I passed over and should consider, also let me know!
Where do yall run when it gets treacherous outside
Looking at the weather for next week... and I only know it's gonna get hotter as summer settles in. Do yall just run inside over summer, or are there any hacks yall are willing to share
Common Commuting Methods to DC Events from Outside Areas (NOVA/Maryland/etc)
Hey all!
This might be a bit premature to ask or open a discussion on, but I've signed up for the DC Half on September 20th, 2026 (https://www.dchalfmarathon.com/).
I'm just looking to plan ahead on some things and am curious about the best methods others have found for travelling in/out of the event or similar events in DC when coming from outside areas (VA/MD/etc) and if there are any specific things to note or be aware of ahead of time if my best choice ends up being to drive in early.
I'll be heading in from about ~40 minutes out in Northern VA and believe it might be too early to catch the metro on the way in. I'm between rideshare in/metro out and driving in very early to find a (somewhat) nearby parking garage/lot.
Thanks in advance to all for the help!
Running to DC from Mt Vernon
Had a beautiful run this morning after getting dropped off at Mt Vernon and running back to DC. Can’t get much better for a long run. 16/17 miles.
Ran a Race with No Results
How common is it to have the race timing system for a race to fail?
I ran a 10k locally on Sunday where instead of a timing mat, they used a big orange box with a sensor to capture Starts and Finishes.
When all the runners were in, the RD announced that they had no results. And if you placed in your AG, they'd mail you your medallion.
Is this a common thing? Is my PR stuck in the cloud somewhere and will drop later this week?
Road Trip for Wine and Sports!
Since peeps seemed interested last time around, I thought I’d flag that DC’s Australian Rules Football team is heading back to Crozet, VA, this time for a tournament with several other east coast clubs. It’s about 2.5 hours from the city, and folks can come and go as they please, drinking wine and hanging out, and then we’ll all head to a brewery nearby once the winner of the Mid-Atlantic Cup has been decided. Whether you’ve always wanted to see what Aussie rules is all about or are just looking for something to do this weekend, come check us out!
Happy to answer any questions, logistical or otherwise.
