Ray Manzarek 1939-2013

The elder of the band, the wizard on the keyboard, Ray Manzarek died on this day in 2013. Just wanted to take the time to remember a man who changed my life and blessed us with music that I’ll listen to until the day I’m gone. Ray was a great storyteller, and whenever you listen to his interviews or read his autobiography, you can tell he was a guy who was incredibly passionate and proud of the work he did with The Doors. Thank you Ray! You’re still remembered and missed.

Real Thing, reminds me of The Doors music for some reason.

Does this song remind anyone of the Doors music?

I don't think thry ever said the doors influenced them but i get a doors vibe from this song. Great song btw.

What are some good Doors DVDs and books to get?

Concerts, documentaries, biographies, poetry. I’m looking to compile a good collection. I have the Doors movie from 1991  on DVD - didn’t like it much. Way too exaggerated for my liking. I’d much rather have a concert film or documentary. I’ve also heard not so good things about the “No One Gets Out Here Alive” book. Not really interested in that as it seems to be false recollections.

I’m looking for good quality, faithful representations of the band. I’m thinking of getting, on DVD: When You’re Strange, Live at the Hollywood Bowl, and The Soft Parade, Ray Manzerek’s response to the movie from ‘91. And potentially a 1971 reprint of Jim Morrison’s poetry. Any others?

How do you think 'bout Robby's guitar playing?

I love his playing! Especially in 'The End', it makes me excited, get high, and feel the sense of freedom

Jim on Boteco Ubaiano's wall

When I get into college, I also began my degree in 'ubaianologia' (ubaianology), an optional subject taken at the Ubaiano.

To describe the place a bit: it's an enclave of nature in the middle of a avenue, 50 steps from the entrance of the campus. I maintained my presence in this subject (which I consider the most important of all) even when college went virtual and there was no one there during the dark times of 2021.

In the midst of my explorations and daydreams, I found Jimbo.

New essay about The Doors and Jim Morrison (free)

I just published this free essay on why I've been listening to The Doors for almost 40 years, and tackle the question of whether they still matter in 2026. (Spoiler: they do). While I am a former newspaper reporter, mostly recently with NY Times-owned The Athletic, I am not a music writer but I hope you enjoy regardless! Included also is my brief 2008 interview with Robby Krieger.

Jim Morrison is one of rock's most mythologized figures — but how much of what we "know" about him is actually true?

I went down a rabbit hole researching the real story behind the legend, and some of what I found genuinely surprised me. The gap between the myth and the man is wilder than I expected.

Made a video on it if anyone wants to dive in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pgi8l-_QJOI

Curious — what's the most surprising thing you've ever learned about Morrison that contradicted the legend?
