A series of pictures of my 150 pound Great Pyrenees mix being terrified of loud noises (and some pictures of him happy, too)
Hamilton is a 5 year old, 150 pound Great Pyrenees/Rottweiler mix. He likes to pretend to be tough, but he’s a giant baby (think Mac from IASIP).
A few years ago, my husband and I planned a two-night trip about 7 hours from home over a weekend. We didn’t realize until closer to the date of the trip that it was the weekend before the 4th of July. By the time we called our vet for boarding, they had no availability. Hamilton is a too big for any of our friends or family to watch overnight, so we ended up calling the host of the Airbnb we had booked to ask if we could pay a pet deposit and bring him.
The host was really nice and agreed to let us bring him. We were excited - there was going to be a beach and he’d never been! Everything was set. He did great on the ride there and had a blast on the first day. And then.
So, when we booked the house, we thought that there would be some space around the houses (at least a bit). When we got there, the houses were much closer than expected. No big deal, we like people! So does Hamilton! Everyone loved him, it was great!
What we didn’t realize at first was that the house directly next to the one we were staying in was being rented out by a family having a family reunion, and they were going all out. That night, they put on a professional-level fireworks show that lasted at least 30 minutes (I want to say it was longer, but it may just be extended in my mind because of how horrible it was).
The fireworks were being set off like, maybe 15-20 feet from the house we were in, if that. Hamilton was absolutely terrified. Honestly, it was so loud that I was uncomfortable even in the house, too. It was LOUD. We didn’t know beforehand that they were going to put on the show, and we had been drinking, so we couldn’t take him away, and there was nowhere really to go in the house we were in, so Hamilton curled up in the darkest corner he could find, shaking. He has PTSD (seriously, from the vet. He gets a prescription each year during firework season).
So as we lay in our couch nest that is the only thing that will calm him down when there are fireworks (pic 1) I thought I’d post the pictures I have of my giant baby boy. I also threw in some of my favorite pictures of him happy so this wasn’t completely depressing. Last pic is the two of us. I’m 5’4” (162 cm).
