So the wick needs to have NO fraying for the cap and it needs to be a bit shorter than I usually run. You need to trim the wick so it doesn't fray. Easiest to trim and then pull down.

Packing with Japanese Cotton Silver.

Wicks are not identical but I wanted to try the thousand strand with the copper weave in one. I honestly prefer the wicks without the copper, easier to trim and have less fraying.

I think this is probably the least helpful rig to test with but since the 912 is sealed at the lid too this will be an endurance test lol

Found the best bottom seal to replace the soggy bag. Fel-Pro gasket sheet

This was my first before I got a better set-up to hold the insert down and cut around.

But so far it's been an excellent addition with the bottom seal and no soggy ass bag lol

I wish they sold this in the small squares still.

If anyone wants some of this to try I can mail a piece in an envelope with a standard stamp for US folks.

I also have a bunch of Zorro cotton kits I may give away but I'll make a post for that when I organize all my spare stuff.

Anything else I can do to help attract more monarchs? I have tons of milkweed that grew up from the wildflower seeds (SE-US North Georgia)

Or should I just get some caterpillars? I think it may be too late to do so for me.

And no. Fuck off. I won't do 458 Shrubmaster, fucking fuck stupid rounds just made for lame ass straight wall only places.

At a cabin for my birthday and this gem is as high as it could be without being mounted at an angle.

Zorro insert packing and found a good trick with these tweezers for removing broken flint springs

The broken screw had enough texture and the brass was soft enough that the hardened steel tweezers made a perfect extraction tool.

Packing on Zorro inserts so far is a 8\10 compared to Zippo inserts. Wick was pushed into a nice wad and went up to the last bit of cotton.

I redid it with a Grenville thousand-strand and camel wool.

Comparing fluid retention with OEM Zorro packing and wick vs with the fancy stuff on a Zorro 912, the lid gasket is doing the heavy lifting with evap, but we'll see if the fluid retaining of the camel is noticed.

These brass Zorro 912s really help point out how light the Titanium one is!

Just got this Guantanamo Bay Zippo, it's a wee bit crusty. Not sure what to do with this insert.

For how bad the insides are the outside is in great shape. The paint is mostly gone, but even in ideal conditions that can happen.

I'm excited for a super unique military Zippo that's Vietnam Era

I'd like to find an example for color matching the paint on potentially and seek advice.

I was thinking testers model paint might be a good option.

Update on Zorro 728 (RollaLite inspired) fluid retention is incredible, 1 month and light up first try.

So definitely a great buy. I haven't repacked and done anything with the internals.

I think on one I'm going to rewick and repack with upgraded items to see if there's a difference.

Very impressed with these. On the all metal model the corner of the case was sharp and I filed it (made a post about that when I got it)

Great buy and factory wick and packing seem well done judging by performance.

Brass Slashes on my circa 40s\50s Brass salesman sample.

The Zippo was cleaned a bit and lightly polished from being beat and well used, but very well cared for and maintained.

I'm letting the metal do it's thing.

A big lot of words. About an ashtray lol

The Ashtray is awesome, for me it has a personal history and not just Cleveland industrial and tobacco paraphernalia.

It has a rest for anything up to the largest diameter cigars.

I'm not sure if this was from my Mom's grandpa from industry stuff or my Dad's they had a lot of similar vendors I'd imagine.

But it sounds like it was a gift from one to the other at some point.

Dad's side was Hamilton Lindsay of Cleveland, and invented a wire weaving loom to weave copper wire for the paper industry. I have some original wire weave somewhere.

My mom knew what it was and basic history since her parents had several antique stores and got a lot of these so she grew up with a lot of repurposed things like this lol.

Need a cam spring replaced on the middle one, seen a few folks offer that

Tried to oil it and do a little heat on it to see if it helped. So far if I manually operate it when the lid is open it pings otherwise on opening the lid it stops short.

Kittyhawk class carrier Zippo collection. All of them came from the ship store.

My quest for birth your zippo's I found that one of these carriers had that so I started with it and then I've kind of wanted some navel zippo's for a while. Looked into the carrier the America and found that there were three kittyhawk class carriers. That makes for a pretty easy collection.

The next naval ones I want are going to be Vietnam ones and I haven't decided what class or type of ship that I would like.

Are there OD versions that are OEM available? Looking to get a TSA approved and regular knife model.

I would like to get an EDC that's TSA friendly and has this screw driver at least.

I feel I should add that I'm Swiss Army Knife rusty, my kid said I was like ole Angus and I was like, damn, I need to carry one now or I'm a fraud.

One that I can check that's a regular knife model is the other.

I don't care for the tweezers or toothpick unless there are ones that are beefier and a metal pick? Those are easy replacements from what I have seen. I would use this as a lighter tinkering tool a lot.

I am anathema towards corkscrews, I remember the weird split phillips head and not being jazzed about it. I'm sure there are bits now?

Don't want 2 blades either.

Pliers would be dope on both.

I want the standard flathead as pictured. That is my number one use for my whole SAK.

As for OD if there's a reseller that does scales I'm open.

Budget $200-300 reasonable?

Thanks dudes.

My 2 favorites. Favorite untouched Zippo, Green Crackle. Fav Hybrid ZipZo if you will the '86 Slashes and brass insert.

Anyone else into futzing about and have a similar set of favorites?

The patina on the brass is light polish and clean out. And just regular carry. After I got it it started out pretty high polished. Other than the patina that was in the slashes.

Attempted weave but the chrome was too inconsistent. Semi polished brass and matte chrome.

The top, hinge side, and bottom are just a matte chrome and the rest is a semi polished brushed look.

I have quite a few more street chromes to play with. I'm thinking I need to start with a hard chrome to get the weave I want.

What do you think of it?

My marble slab is proper flat and so is my sander platten (it's ceramic glass) but I found some areas a lot thicker in coating and the body wasn't that flat so sanding by hand was needed to remove the chrome.

Trusty Brass Slashes update with Zorro pure brass insert.

I messed up and somehow snapped the flint screw, I can extract it so no biggie.

But I did get to test the camel, red wick, and bottom gasket for fuel evap.

I decided to leave it in my car in the sun for 5 straight days while out of town.

I left it in the GA summer in my car for 5 days. And it's lighting like I just filled it.

I used a brass spring punch to make a divet on each side of the insert. And even without the flint screw to hold it still retains.

When the insert seats into the casing it seals.

I sanded down the casing and it fits even better now. I need to look at the old pics to compare but every so often if the lid was off center it could lightly tap the flint wheel. It no longer does now.

Final pic is pre sanding.
