China travel - eSIM and VPN for French people’s

Hello,

Message Will be in French as it is made for them.

For English speaker, there is a French mobile phone provider F..e who provide a affordable monthly set, its include 35gd of data in most countries in the world, with an included vpn.

As said, this is not an add, but a customer feedback.

I use it when I am on short trip in China, everything works, only sms and call are not included (and expensive)

Got this for free in a coin shop

Hello,

I got this for free in a coin shop, not specialised in Asian currency (mostly European and North American one).

Do you have idea if it a real or a modern lucky charm?

In any cas: what can it be?

Thank you!

Purpose of each sauce: Am I correct?

Hello,

We bought a bunch of sauces and wanted to see if we are correct or not and get more informations if possible (dish match, flavor, etc.)

1: Shrimp sauce?

2: General use medium spicy sauce. Maybe the same we found on most table in a red plastic bootle?

3: Lemon chili sauce. I guess it can be used with others than seafood.

4: Kind of salt/spice to be used with green plum/mango

5: all purpose sauce?

6: Spicy sauce all purpose?

Thank you for your help!

Question: this dish has been sold to us as pork nem, is it correct?

Question is in the title. We were quite surprised, expecting rolls.

Waiter show us to take a leave, put some of the mix in, fold it and dip in sauce.

It was good but not expected so I am curious to know if it’s a legit dish and learn about it or if we have been scammed. Restaurant was full of local, eating smoking and drinking, having a good time.

Thank you!

Hanoï to Halong bay (bai chay)

Hello,

We are currently looking for the best option to go from Hanoi old district to Halong bay (specifically Bai Chay).

We are considering private car/minibus with a departure in the morning (arrival before lunch).

A pickup at our current address and drop off at the next one will be a must.

Do you have reliable company (hopefully worth fare price) to recommend?

Thank you!

Travel feedback: Nanning, Guilin, Yangshuo

Hello,

I would like to help the community by making a feedback of my trip in Guangxi, especially Nanning, Guilin and Yangshuo.

Hope it can help. This is of course not exhaustive, and reflect only my experience!

Step 1: Nanning:

Arrived by flight, the airport is very convenient and it is easy to catch a DiDi to city center.

Total stay: 3.5 days, in 2 times.

First hotel we chose was from a Hilton branch, decent BUT… we found out it was in a business area, no restaurants, no shop, etc.

We decided to change to an hotel with a name started by H in green color located near Tonghong rd / xingguang av. Life changing. This hotel is very nice with a good price for value (if it’s against the rules, please delete those few words). I am sure there is plenty of nice hotel around.

Why that area:

- Major shopping mall accross the street.

- Streets with street food, shop, restaurant, etc, across the street. Very lively.

- Metro line 2

- Big traditional market for local (Wuxi rd) a mix of street sellers, small shops and wholesalers. Perfect to buy fresh fruits, specialities, spices, cooking ware.

Be aware that some booth sell dog meat, so don’t go or look the other side.

- Famous night street market at only 15mins walk. Awesome place! Go there with an empty stomach!

What I seen:

- Choyang square: a bit overrated from my point of view. It’s a reconstruction of old street. But lively and plenty of food booth!

- History museum: it’s free, with a nice collection of artefacts from the Stone Age to modern age. Not much explanation in English but it’s great. Passeport needed to come in.

- Numismatic museum: Awesome for those interested in Chinese money.

- Few temples, I forgot most of the names. Some worth it, some not. I guess it will depends on your interest in it and time you spend in the city.

Step 2: Guilin:

We plan to head to Yangshuo and made a daily stop in Guilin.

Took a morning high speed train from Nanning to Guilin, approx 2h30. There is some automatic locker, yellow color, on the left at the outside of the station. Convenient to visit the city light.

In Guilin we visited famous bridges, hang up near the technological university, perfect to find a real Guilin noodle restaurant! Spot the ones with students, workers and locals, they are the best. Rest of the day was. Heavy rain so city center visit was compromised.

Then we took train to Yangshuo.

Spoiler: we made a mistake. Instead of train we should have taken a 4h boat trip from Guilin to Yangshuo…

Step 3: Yangshuo

That place is magic, just look by the windows and WOW 😍 The area deserves it’s reputation!

We took a Airbnb in a village near Yangshuo city center. I strongly advise to do so! It was so quiet and relaxing, slow pace life, nature everywhere. (DM is you want a tested place contact - again, if again the rules, delete this part please).

Walking or renting a electric scooter (no driver licence needed, 30y per day) to follow the Yulong river is awesome. The weather is often changing and therefor the view too!

Good thing with scooter is you gain in freedom and can cross villages or other places where organised tour don’t go.

You can easily fish everywhere, no permit needed. We bought a complete basic set only for 30y, delivered the next day!

Visit to the Yulong bridge and Fuli bridge are a must.

For rock climber, we seen places offering rock climbing tour!

Even in villages you can find, sometimes simple but very good restaurants serving local food.

Yangshuo center:

The west street is famous, very busy, but over reputed from my point of view. It became a caricature of itself. But still some good restaurants! And the place look good.

Xinping:

As we made the mistake to not take boat from Guilin, we took a 90mins sightseeing boat trip from Xinping. That was nice. The old town is also great to visit with some nice cafe, and a street vendor who play shi/fu/mi to sell watermelon. You win, it’s for free, you lose, you have to buy. Funny! (And we won 🤣)

By the way, even in villages, it’s very easy to get a DiDi so transportation is not an issue.

Return to Nanning by high speed train, 3h.

Hope this can help. If you have questions, feel free. I’ll do my best to answer. Again, this is only a feedback based on my experience and personal taste.

Do we have to carry passport around all the time?

Hello,

Simple question: is it mandatory to carry passport all the time? I tend to not like it as if I lose it or it’s been stolen it will create major issues.

What is the official rule and what is the real life?

Beside this, any tip to avoid trouble and stay safe in Hanoi/Halong Bay Area will be welcomed!

Thank you.
