Looking for solid crew members for Zion spring trip (April 10–17, 2027)

Disclaimer: I used AI to help me write and format this.

Hey everyone,

I'm organizing a trip to Zion for April 10–17, 2027 (Saturday to Saturday) and am looking to connect with a few competent, safety-minded canyoneers to build out a solid crew.

Trip Overview

  • Dates: April 10, 2027 – April 17, 2027
  • Basecamp: Watchman Campground (camping each night, running canyons during the day)
  • Objective: Tackling the high-quality classic canyons on our target list (e.g., Heaps, Imlay, Kolob, Mystery, Englestead, Boundary, Checkerboard, Das Boot, Orderville, Behunin).

What We're Looking For

  • Technical Competence: Solid technical foundation—comfortable with efficient rope work, leapfrogging rappels, and utilizing retrievable anchor systems (Fiddlestick/Smoothie) as appropriate to protect the resource and move efficiently.
  • Safety & Ethics: High standard for safety, clear communication, and a strict commitment to Leave No Trace (LNT) practices.
  • Vibe: Positive, collaborative, and adaptable to changing conditions or permit availability.

If you’re interested, shoot me a DM with a summary of your technical experience, recent canyons you've run, and any gear/rope capacity you bring to the table.

Looking forward to getting a great group together!

PS: That's my RopeWiki profile with a snapshot of the canyons I have run this year. https://ropewiki.com/User:DorsaBrevia
I just started using RopeWiki this year. I did canyoning in my last life chapter, that are not on that profile. I have a skill set from my climbing and white-water kayaking background.

Anybody want a Canyon today?

We ran Summit and Hagar yesterday dingford the day before had a great time.

Looking for anybody interested in joining us for Davis Canyon today we may head down to Eagle Creek if we can't find more people to run Davis with.

The plan for Eagle Creek is just to run the punch bowls through muklocko.

PNW canyon runners looking for a crew

Greetings!

My friend and I just ran Dingford today and had a wonderful time!

We realized it would be better to run these canyons with someone who knows them well. In Dingford, we found it tough to know where to slide and jump on some of the drops—especially relative to canyons in Zion, where those skills aren't usually part of the canyoning equation.

Here’s our plan for the next 3 days:

Dm me if your intresed in joining our trip for one or more of these canyons.

should I buy "Sailrite Deluxe Industrial Fabricator Sewing Machine Package"

https://preview.redd.it/vgbgf6nj9meh1.png?width=1144&format=png&auto=webp&s=1474d52c4d554f669b0bcd81569dec5bbf1ab4cb

I am considering buying this machine off FB market place for ~$1,300. Currently, my TuffSew is broken after my last rope bag project. Link to a video of that build his here: youtube.com/watch?v=Kl_kEjNb6dg&feature=youtu.be

I need something that is easier to repair and will hold up better to the abuse of making bags with thick material like 18oz PVC and flat webbing. My thought is to buy this machine and use it for all straight stitches, then use my tuffsew for zigzags. If you have this machine or have thoughts on this purchase decision, please let me know.

So I talked with the guy reparing my tuffsew and he recomended:

  1. Consew 206 RB triple feed large capacity bobbin like the one above which is also on FB marketplace in my area for $1,000
  2. Juki 563 for bigger bobbin
  3. Pfaff 545 H4 because the fook comes up higher.

https://preview.redd.it/ty424osekneh1.png?width=1844&format=png&auto=webp&s=c0fc46118e65f224e74efe0d7ebd481712f2dc35

This shows the feed rock shaft on the sail right and his argument is that with this design it is difficult to get the machine's timing fixed when it breaks vs machines that are A compound walking foot sewing machine (also known as a triple-feed or unison feed machine) which features an inner presser foot, needle, and feed dogs that all move together to pull fabric through the machine. The sail light machine: the needle does not walk fordward its fixed in place.

Pink Line 8.5mm Caving Rope for wet canyons

Just curious if anyone is using this rope for running wet canyons?

It's about 50% less expensive at $0.60 cents a foot than Pintail Lite 9.0 mm, which costs $1.20 per foot.

Or Canyonero 9.2 Static Rope, which is also $1.20 per foot.

I used a 100ft segment of Canyonero for spry canyon in Zion this year, and it was a great rope.

But I think it might be more than I need for 4-5 PNW canyons.

Costco bag bigger than a boat tote

I've been wanting to sew one of these reasonable shopping bags ever since I got my industrial sewing machine. Finally got around to it this weekend after I observed our facilities crew at work preparing these old marketing banners for the dumpster. I was able to intercept three of them and went right to work building two of these shopping bags.

It's nice to do a simple project from time to time this is about as simple as it gets!

Unlinked Bolts PNW best practice

I'm looking to get some insight into what everyone's preferred workflow is when rapping on unlinked bolts in the Pacific Northwest.

In this location, hangers are often unlinked to prevent high-flow debris and winter logs from snagging webbing/chains and tearing out the anchors.

When you and your team approach an unlinked two-bolt station, what is your go-to rigging routine?

The workflow that comes to mind is the (Last Man At Risk)(linking them temporarily for the team) and then have the last person down convert it to a specialized retrievable system on a single bolt?

Would love to hear how folks approach this.

What’s your step-by-step flow at the station?

Auxiliary battery 12 volt system

So I have three lithium ion victron batteries in my existing 12 volt system.

I just acquired three more 12 volt batteries

Make: Lion Energy

Model: Safari UT 1300

That I would like to use this auxiliary batteries to charge the primary batteries. And I think I can do this relatively easy with the DC DC charge controller.

I'm thinking I'll just string them together in parallel to maintain the voltage.

However I would also like to recharge the auxiliary batteries from the primary system when there is extra generation capacity available from the Grid or the solar or the alternator charger. Is this feasible?

Without having to manually adjust a charger and disconnect the auxiliary battery from its DC to DC charge controller that outputs power to the primary battery.

In short I'm trying to figure out if there's a bi-directional charging option for an auxiliary battery in a 12 volt system it's all victron gear. Except the new batteries.

Important things to check before buying

So I'm looking at a 2013 model the batteries pretty dead at this point with only four out of 12 bars left.

I'm planning on replacing the battery.

Has a clean tittle.

How does one become a good sailor

Watching what appears to be a sale boat race today at natural bridges was a sight to behold.

Wind was gusting from the north east.

How do these boast not tip over in gusty winds like we had today?

How does one get good enough to sale in these conditions?

How much does this hobby cost to get this good and stay this good?

Buyer wants to return truck the day after buying it sold as is

I sold a 20 year old truck yesterday with a blown head gasket for a $3300.

It was sold as is the buyer filled out a bill of sale explicitly stating that it was in an as is sell.

I signed the title over to him.

And immediately after logged into the California State DMV website and filled out the release of liability form online.

Today the buyer calls me and says he's bringing the vehicle back because it doesn't go into four-wheel drive. And it's going to cost too much to fix.

He then sends me a text message saying that he's bringing the truck back to my house.

How should I proceed with communication with this person?

What should I do if they actually bring the vehicle back?

########## Update number two. Just woke up. I've not heard from the buyer since I sent the message. And the vehicle is not been returned.

Smog check for a 2020 or newer diesel cheeper that $109

Greetings,

I am looking for a place in San Jose to get my diesel van smog checked. Do folks have recommendations for a place that can do the job for less than $109? That was what I was quoted from a well-rated location I found on Yelp.

What causes this hammering sound on the hot water heater

Problem statement; whenever we turn on the hot water particularly when we use the sprayer in the sink or run the dishwasher or run the washing machine it sounds like something's hammering inside the hot water heater and I don't know what it is. I have a video with a sound sample above.

I'm just curious is it possible to reserve these from a private landowner or recreation.gov or another website?

Saw these two tents up just below the bridge today while I was picking up trash at this scenic viewpoint.
