Thoughts On Postal 1997

Edit: Fixed the image links. Apparently you can't just link to a straight file from fandom!

So, a week or so ago I watched a video on Postal, and I didn't exactly agree with it. I'm not going to link back to the video for 3 main reasons; I do not want to invite any sort of negativity towards this person, and I don't even really remember who they were because I was intoxicated, and I watch a LOT of videos on the Postal series. I also do not think it would benefit this discussion because this is about a relatively small aspect of the video, and I'm mostly using it as a jumping off point to discuss Postal.

So, first and foremost, I would like to lay out some definitions. I am going to assume that you, the reader, have played, or at the very least watched a playthrough of, both Postal 1997 and Postal Redux, because this is the Postal subreddit, but laying out some definitions seems helpful.

Demon Journals: I will be referring to the journal entries shown between levels in the base game as the "Demon Journal/s". The Demon Journal depicts the Postal Dude's thought process as very sadistic and cruel, with heavy religious overtones.

War Journal: The War Journal was an alternate set of journal entries that were initially provided in the instruction manuel for Postal, but were later added into Postal Redux as replacements for the Demon Journals in harder difficulties. The War Journal depicts the Postal Dude's thought process as paranoid and delusional. He only gives into the carelessness presented in the game later on in his spree, according to these entries. The entries start off labelled as a diary, but later get changed to being labelled as a war journal.

The Demon Theory: A fairly common Postal theory. There are 3 interpretations of this theory; the Postal Dude is posessed by a literal demon, the demon is a metaphor for mental illness, and the player is the demon. I will go into detail about my own thoughts on my intepretation of it when it comes up.

So, with that out the way, what did this person say that I did not agree with?

What frustrated me was a dismissal of the demon journals because they perceived them as too goofy, and they did not believe the demon journal was cohesive with the ending of the game, and they thought the war journal was better and more congruent, and thus, they ultimately dismissed the demon journals. Now, people are allowed to have opinions, of course. I agree that sometimes the ultraviolent language of the demon journals can come off as a bit silly, Postal was very much intended to be black comedy, so it makes sense. Sometimes I can imagine Not Important from Hatred saying these lines with his full chest. I also do prefer how the war journal entries presents a more linear story. However, I'm allowed to see fault in others opinions and how they treat a story because of it. I believe it goes against the story that Postal intended to convey to dismiss the demon journals in favor of the war journals. I believe you need both to understand the full scope, and the idea of the demon journals not making sense feels strange to me.

Why is that? Well, if you dismiss the demon journals, then the Postal Dude's voice lines make no sense. As I stated earlier, the war journal only says the Dude only gives into the idea of not caring in a later portion of the game. But according to his voice lines, the Dude is a sadistic little freak from the start. He taunts his victims, cracks jokes, and... Well, I'll loop back around to the voicelines. So the war journals do not make sense with what we see in the game, because the war journal depicts the Dude as scared for a decent portion. The demon journals are more congruent with his behavior we see because both are gleefully sadistic, relishing in the violence he is enacting. The war journals make sense within the context of the games ending and the beginning. The war journal begins with the Dude saying he's being kicked out of his home, and in the first level, we see that there is a moving van outside his home.

Another thing I found frustrating about this analysis of Postal was that they complained that, in the war journal, upon entering The Ghetto, the journal reverts to being called a diary, and the Dude fears getting mugged. I believe this makes complete sense. A man having a "everyone is out to get me" breakdown WOULD be afraid of getting mugged, and as for the reversion, we need to actually read the entries.

The Ghetto's entry is as follows;

"Diary: My head... Pounding. Must work way towards Air Force Base. Coming to a "bad" section of town... Better be... Careful... Might get mugged..."

The Dude sounds delirious here. His head is pounding, his dialogue keeps trailing. To me, it feels like the eye of a storm. A brief reprieve before the worst of it. After this, ignoring the Super Postal and Carnival levels, we have The City, Central Park, The Air Force Base, and The Elementary School. After this point, it goes back to the title of War Journal, but he seems less gleeful in his destruction. "I'm gonna die once I hit the city anyhow...", "Taking too many hits...", "Keep moving, soldier...", "Too far to quit now."

The Dude is tired and afraid, but he's on a mission... But what about the demon journals and his voicelines? Personally, I believe theyre a manifestation of violent intrusive thoughts. The Demon Theories primary pieces of evidence are the stark difference between the war journal and demon journal, and the fact the Postal Dude's voicelines are labelled within the games files as "demon". Another piece of evidence is that some lines do not seem like the Dude is talking to a victim or to himself, but rather, some unseen individual. "Only you can stop the evil." and "Shake it up, baby!" (A special mention for r/postal only... "They never liked you.") come to mind for me. The first line feels very much like a paranoid thought to me, especially in tandem with the war journal having the Dude's motivation clearly being a paranoid delusion of a hate virus. I believe some lines are his internal thoughts... In fact, in looking through an old Postal site, I saw a staff member refer to Rick Hunter's lines as the Dude's "inner demon".

So, to sum up my thoughts here; I believe you need both journals to understand the game fully understand Postal, and my interpretation is that the demon journal is the Dude externalizing his violent intrusive thoughts, while the war journal is the more straightforward explanation of what's going on.

But I'm not finished! Because I have MORE thoughts to yap about!

When Postal Redux released, the ending was changed. I completely understand why they changed it, but something I've seen no one say is that the Redux ending feels worse in terms of quality. Personally, I think the original ending was way better. I think they should have either just stuck to their guns (haha), or thought of something new that fit the same sort of energy.

Firstly, there's player control. In the original ending, you have 0 control over the Dude. It is entirely scripted. It makes it clear that the Dude cannot harm the children. He cannot do anything. He then succumbs to his breakdown, and the final sequence plays. In Redux, you have almost complete control, barring some forced speed reduction and taking away of all your weapons except your AR. The NPCs are, like the children in Postal, unkillable, but you only find this out if you choose to shoot at them. You only lose control when the Dude succumbs to his breakdown.

Secondly, there's the content of the scenes. I'm obviously not against having to interpret things, just look at this damn post, but I think the ending of Redux is too ambiguous. The only real point of ambiguity in the original ending is if the children are real, while in Redux, it's a lot. Firstly, the fact we're at a funeral. Okay, so, whoevers in the coffin is the only hostile of the level, and the hostile counter drops to 0 once the coffin is lowered. Is this the Dude's funeral? Probably. But wait, in another difficulty, there's two people in addition to the priest, so who are they? Are they the Dude's family? But, wait, the hostile counter only counts external threats so is this one of the Dude's victims? BUT WAIT! In co-op, instead of the priest and couple, it's 4 dead Postal Dudes! BUT WAIT, IN THIS MODE IT'S OSTRICHES. IT'S OSTRICH TIME. OSTRICH FUNERAL. THE HOSTILE IN THE COFFIN IS CLEARLY AN OSTRICH.

So, those are my thoughts. I'm bad at ending things like this. I think looking at a whole work and not just the bits you like is important for properly analyzing things.

This post was brought to you by *Unfettered Autism!* Get used to people acting like you're fucking crazy for preferring the ending where a guy tries killing a bunch of kids, cos that's your life now!

Thoughts On Postal 1997

SPOILERED FOR DISCUSSIONS OF MASS SHOOTINGS, INCLUDING IN A SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT, AND GENERALLY UPSETTING THEMES AND IDEAS.

I will edit on desktop to include links! Typing this on my phone just to get my thoughts out.

Edit: UPDATED! We now have links!

So, a week or so ago I watched a video on Postal, and I didn't exactly agree with it. Someone defaced my art, what do I do?

Post in question

If you go look at the comments, you can see someone edited my artwork to change the LGBT flags into nazi flags. I reported the comment for hate and harassment and told the subs mods, but I was wondering if there was anything else I could do about it? I'm really upset about this, and nothing has happened yet regarding it.
