Forgot how to go about fin aid

Im going back to school at 30 and I got my fin aid offers, just federal loans, and I cant remember what the advisor said to do.

Are we accepting for the whole year or just the current semester?

If you accept enough for tuition and books, the books aren't paid for automatically like tuition is right? So would the books amount go back to me or to my bursar account or something like that?

Divorce/annulment search and also rude ass people

Im trying to find divorce (or probably annulment) records for my great grandpa. I did some googling and came to the conclusion that you just have to call the county clerk for them. The lady was SO! RUDE! and acting like i was so stupid for asking and for not knowing that I needed a book and page number. So I said id call back. I searched some more, didnt find any indexes for divorce or annulment on ancestry or family search. Googled again and found that the indexes are ALSO AT THE COURTHOUSE. Has anyone found these types of records before and/or dealt with an asshole that doesn't seem like theyre going to want to help you? If so any and all tips are welcomed 😭

Recommendations for replacement laptop keys

Looking for help on trustworthy places to get a replacement laptop key. My cat pulled off my i key and ive been able to use it fine, but now the little rubber nobby thing JUST came off, so I need to just go ahead and get a new one. But It also needs to have the little scissor mechanism thingy and I dont really know what im doing like at all lol

Also, can I just glue the little nobby thing back on with a tiny dot of super glue or stick glue or something?

I have a lenovo thinkbook

Is there a modification or something for fat bodies to do this pose?

This was in a yoga video I did the other day and I know i did it fine years ago when I had lost a bunch of weight, but ive gained it all back and now it feels like im suffocating and going to topple over my head. The teacher said to keep your weight in your knees but how the hell do you even control that? Is it just because im fat that I cant control it the same or is there a modification to make it accessible or...??

Asthma/have I forgotten how to breathe?

I dont know if this is the rught place for thus but i figured id try idk. I just finished a basic yoga video (just revisiting because im getting back into the habit after a long time of doing nothing, and ive been in a slump the last few weeks) on the 3 part breath, where you breathe into your belly then ribs then chest. I used to be able tk do it fine when I was younger (I just turned 30) but ive since discovered that I have asthma, im trying to quit vaping, and my doctor prescribed me a new inhaler after my new insurance refused to cover my usual one, and the new one seems to almost make things worse??

Anyway I just finished that short video and I thought itd be a nice little back to basics moment, but instead I struggled like a LOT. Its like i couldn't transition from the belly to the chest? Before the asthma discovery, I was having trouble getting full breaths and it was hard to breathe into my belly at all. Lately, ive been having much less trouble with either of those but when im practicing yoga, I *have* been neglecting/struggling with the strict breath control that I used to have (Ive gained weight, my body gets in my way, and ive gotten a lot weaker and tighter and its all so much harder right now, so the breath is the first thjng to go i think). I do still have some breath control during movement, but it can be VERY restricted based on what im doing like twists or ab workouts especially. So now, in a class focusing solely on breath, it was a HUGE struggle and I couldn't get a full breath at all and couldn't breathe into my chest after filling the first two parts. Ugh

Am i making sense? Has anyone else dealt with this before? Does anyone know what to do? Is it normal/expected even and just needs practice?

Whats going on with ai in this community????

Im pretty new to genealogy and I did not expect ai to be so widely accepted here.

A big part of genealogy is the puzzle of it all, no? And the fact that that massive puzzle is a collaboration between us all. And yet, i keep seeing recommendations for using ai tools INSTEAD of fellow genealogists as sounding boards.

My most recent ancestry is Appalachian, and the roots run DEEP in almost every line, for generations back. And I've found Appalachian specific genealogists who openly embrace the use of ai, specifically for restoring old photos and creating photos of how they mightve looked when they were younger???? AND their (passive aggressive, mind you) excuse was that its a part of research? Restoring photos is great yes, and imagining what they looked like younger is cool. But SO NOT a part of research dude!? AND if you are going to do those things, they are both art forms! Humans do art! Some humans do art for free because they love it! It is common knowledge, i think, that Appalachia is one of the poorest regions in the country. We know that data centers are largely placed in the poorest communities, including appalachia. And we know that their presence leads to people literally being without showers and drinking water. Side by side with our quest for our Appalachian ancestors? Am I wrong in thinking that a core piece of genealogy is some level of love and reverence for our ancestors, maybe also for the land and times that they existed in?

Ive also seen so many photos recolored, clearly by ai, where it seems to have added a blurring affect as well making it look even more blurry than the original did. I recolored some old photos myself years ago so I know it is incredibly meaningful and rewarding to do it yourself or even just to have someone else do it who understands the care and importance of that.

And yet were using so much generative ai, which affects our ancestors origins, AND dillutes and cheapens the puzzle and the mystery of genealogy so that we can have illustrations we dont really need (that could be made with soul and skill instead) and have instant gratification instead of reaping the rewards of our own hard work??

Im not talking about accessibility tools here. I'm talking about taking shortcuts instead of learning a new skill or seeking out help and practicing patience. On top of the effects of literally destroying our entire collective home. Even finding our roots is not worth the future dying by our hands. It reminds me of the same issue in the fiber arts community (or the granny hobbies in general! Part of the entire point IS the slowness!) I feel like this community should understand that better than most others.

Am i interpreting this mystery timeline right??

ETA: this is all in Kentucky.

Im working on my best friends tree right now, and a set of great grandparents is a serious mystery but I thjnk i just found some seriously big clues, so am i getting it right? Is there anything you would think differently about it? Also, what would you do next?

Characters are: Sylvania Johnson (maiden name), later Wright

Richard Mosley

Mildred mosely (daughter of the above)

Tom Wright

Hassell Burke

And a bunch of kids

I havent been able to find birth or death records for Sylvania, birth recs for Mildred or hassell, and its too soon to get their death records. Im going to call/request the others as soon as I get paid. So for now, I just did a bunch of searches on the family search full text thing. I found NOTHING for Hassell (except as a mention on one of the following. So here's the timeline I put together from what I found for Sylvania and mildred.

1918: Sylvania Johnson marries Richard Mosley

1940 Jan: this note appears: witness: JJ Mosley; to the county court clerk of Floyd Co. You are authorized by the (something) of these (something that looks like carittings) to give license to the bearer of same for my girl, Gracie Mosley. Her age is 18. Her father is dead Richard Mosley. Mothers name is Sylvania Wright. Stwp father name Tom Wright. Witness (C something) Mosley and Mildred Mosley

May: Sylvania and Tom WRIGHT agree to 16 year old Mildred Marrying 22 year old Hassell Burke

1942: Mildred Burke is appointed guardian of Glenda Lee Burke (infant) and there is a court order entry thing alongside the main document

1949: Sylvania Wright is appointed guardian of Dorsie, Millie, Geneva, Jessie Lee, and Pearlie Wright (plus court order entry)

1952 May: Dorsie get married, then Mildred B is appointed guardian of Pearlie Wright (Hassell Burke is one of two sureties)

1952 June: Mildred B is appointed guardian of Geneva and Jessie Lee Wright

1953-1957: court entries listing disbursements of social security checks for support of the kids by Mildred

So my thoughts: Richard Mosley died some time before 1940. That note about Gracie must be for a marriage right? But from who??? Then when Mildred is Glendas guardian, did she and Hassell get divorced? Because its never the two of them being appointed guardianship (I'll need to compare these to the births of her other children for sure). Then Tom Wright must have died in 1948 or 49 when Sylvania is guardian? And then Sylvania died 2 or 3 years later when Mildren gets them? Then did she die in 1957 when the court entries stop? Or did i just not find everything?

Thank you for reading all this. Please give me thoughts 🙏🏻

How do you approach your research lines?

I feel like the way that makes the most sense to me is going generation by generation from one side of the tree to the other, instead of just following one line, because i can be sure to hit every single line. Except im still forgetting where im at and missing people along the way (part is probably that im working on mine, my step dad's, and my best friends at the same time. I might put my step dad's on pause for a bit, but still i know I'll keep missing people doing it the way I am now) does anyone else do it this way and if so, how do you keep track of where you are? If not, what DO you do?

Im using the legacy software and it has bookmarks, but only three at a time.

Im pretty new so I still dont really know what im doing navigating these records

Have you ever stumbled on a mystery??? I just did

TRIGGER WARNING: missing kid

I was just looking at the hints on ancestry for my step dad's mom and found an unrelated newspaper article about a 12 year old boy who went missing in 1962 after taking rides from dad's new acquaintance. Google's got nothing and idk where to start so im just gonna start with a genealogy search starting with the boy and his parents and see what comes up on ancestry

Do you have to buy extras for panda dryer?

I got this dryer and I've seen people have a lint collector thing (I guess?) With a vent hose leading from the back. Do you HAVE to get one of those to use it or can I use the dryer a couple times before getting one?

Online schools?

The most recent posts im seeing are from 6 years ago, so im wondering if anyone knows of schools that have legit online campuses with broad course selections? I know iu does, but courses are limited. I haven't looked into purdue global yet, is that legit?

Im thinking of finishing my psych degree and getting a history degree as well, but i also just want to take classes for fun. But it seems like in order to do that and have the whole variety of subjects available, I would have to quit my job or work part time and go to school in person which is obviously not happening. It's there hope, or are they literally all either scams or too focused on job market stuff?

Should I quit before classes start?

I just turned 30 and ive been wanting to go back to school for a long time. I have a full time job, basically no friends, not much time, and im trying to build healthy habits.

I enrolled and registered for 2 classes at the state university in my city, with one online class and one in person class 2 evenings a week. The online class was canceled almost immediately and everything else that I could take this semester is in person. I also haven't gotten any financial aid so far so id be exclusively relying on loans apparently.

I think I may try to finish my psych degree and get a second in history with a minor in religious studies and women and gender studies (if i can do a second minor idk). But also, I just want to be in school for as long as i can. I dont really have a plan to start a career and I like the idea of just taking classes forever because I enjoy it.

My advisor moves really fast in our appointments, so i havent really gotten a great understanding of how ti use thw course search/registration software, so i dont know how it really works, if I can take other random classes that aren't in my plan for the semester, and she hasn't responded since I told her that im getting discouraged since the class was cancelled. Im worried that a lot of the things I want to take wont even be available online and i might never be able to take them due to work. I was also excited aboht meeting people and maybe making some friends finally..

So. Should I go ahead and drop the remaining class while its early and try to find a decent online college where I can take a bunch of classes as Id like? Or should I keep trying to contact my advisor?

I feel such a lack of culture and its so fucking sad (sorry, long)

Im about halfway through Ancestral Whispers by Ben Stimpson and its so good. But I just needed to talk about this piece, that ive felt and noticed a lot before but now its becoming a more active issue for me I guess? Idk if thats a good way to word that but whatever.

There are a few questions in the book about like, think abiut the community you grew up in, were you taught dances or songs in your family/community, were you told certain folktales by wise and cherished storytellers, were there any memorials to community ancestors, probably more. And my answer to every. Single. One. Is no (or yes but colonizer) Unless you count nursery rhymes, which I dont think is really what were talking about here, there were no folk songs, no dances (now that i think about it, I guess the chicken dance? 🙄😬😒) definitely no folk tales at all, and any ghost stories I came across were looked down on because, obviously, demons. There were some memorials, 9/11 of course (in my current city but not in my home town) war memorials like Vietnam (due to unnecessary colonizer chaos, and also not in my hometown), and one statue that i remember, of John Connor, the colonizer who founded my town. There is also a little dollhouse in a cemetary as a headstone for a little girl who died decades ago, and thats really sweet and everyone in the town knows about it, but it doesn't feel like the same thing? Like its very sweet and i love it but it's more for her family, not a community thing you know?

I dont know if this sounds stupid or if im even explaining it right, and I know it just means that I can create my own and/or reconnect to older ancestral practices like ive been working on doing. But it feels like I dont have real roots or something I guess? Like im just floating around in the capitalistic, colonizer world of goo and theres nothing to grab on to, except a couple vague little cute/weird things from my home town and I cant really verbalize the depth of sadness and longing I feel when i really think about that.

Maybe its partly because of adhd that makes it so hard for me to stay consistent with my practice, so I havent built the relationships with ancestors and habits and stuff that would maybe help? I dont know. It just makes me so sad and angry and I cant be the only one

Actually I just remembered there is a museum house one town over that was a stop on the underground railroad....but the whole area is still quite racist so I dont even know if thats considered a community ancestor...thing. I think it is important to me because it helped shape my understanding of the world and being anti racist and trying to educate my family and shit. Idk if thats relevant in this context. Am I thinking about it too deep? Am i also just detached emotionally for some reason? Jesus. Anyway. Thanks for reading my stream of consciousness thingy? Hopefully this isn't embarrassing

ADHD & Organization? 😰

Eta: i am also mainly using ancestry with my in depth notion pages.

Hello! Ive rece try restarted my ancestry for probably the 15th time and this is the serious one I swear lol. Ive started a whole section with databases on notion with this great timeline view and its starting to feel like a pretty strong setup with a lot of potential. BUT im realizing getting more detailed is REALLY hard for me to stay on topic and also not get all mixed up.

For example: I have a page for each person. I realized starting with just my maternal line, 1) I want to get deeper into these women's lives and 2) their husbands were big parts of their lives, so i need to at least base level get into them as well. But I keep getting confused and putting info down for the wrong people or ages in the wrong dates etc

I added a little section on each person's page to list all of their immediate family members, where i could copy and paste certain people so that i would have an easier time connecting people when im looking at census records and when im moving from one person to the next. (A's siblings are b & c's children, a's children are d's children, etc). This has helped some, but i still keep getting all confused. Even with the name of the current persons pave at the top, I have to pause to let my mind connect the dots for an extended period of time, and its also making deeper/more complex questions SOOOOO much harder to think through when I cant even keep the people straight in my brain.

Should I do things on paper first so i can shuffle them around/visually separate them? Maybe theres some magic trick i dont know abiut? If anyone has any ideas or a similar brain/experience, I would THOROUGHLY appreciate any help, tips, ideas for what else I need to implement.

Youtube ads about social media mental health lawsuits?

I keep getting ads on YouTube about social media lawsuits that if you (or your child) started using social media between certain ages and ended up developing depression, ED, etc, you/they may be eligible for financial compensation. Most of them say that only people between 18-25 are eligible, which seems wild and wrong. I just turned 30 so I guess fuck me even though it very much applies to my childhood lol. But they also give a vibe of tiktok shop junk ads? And the only ones that I've paid close enough attention to are from websites like "wewillfightforyou.com" which also seems weird as hell. I know there are some real lawsuits but can you actually get compensation from any of them or are these ads just trying to capitalize on the news?
