I am starting a new job and my boss is american. She is just coming back after giving birth and I will meet her in person tomorrow. Is it ok for me to as about the baby?

I am asking because in my country it would be rude not to ask, in fact, would be seen as nice not only to ask about the baby, but ask to see pics of him and then saying something like how chubby and vute they are. Americans tend to be really work minded, so I am not sure if that would be seen as improper, weird or unprofessional

Questions on Oxford bus system and etiquette

Here are a few questions from a newbie student in the city

  1. How do I know if I should press the stop button? Sometimes no one press it and still stops, sometimes the bus just stops if you press it

  2. How can I save money? Im using day passes, but still kinda expensive at the end of the month

  3. If the bus in full but priority sits are available, can i site there as long as no one entitled to it comes in?

  4. If people are watching tiktoks very loud can i ask them to turn down the volume or i will be an as*hole?

  5. If I sit next to someone and then a better spot becomes available is it rude for me to change sits?

  6. If someone next to me is eating a food with a very strong smell that is giving me some nauseas (i have some health issues, long story) can i ask them to stop? If it is from an ethinical cousine is it racist to ask them to stop or for me to change sits? Keep in mind i am a foreigner myself (latina but socially considered white)

Are tips mandatory in Oxford? If so, people wont accept me to tip by card so what should i do when i dont have irl cash?

In my country they usually come included as a sugestion in the bill and you pay by card but people dont get mad if you dont tip them, specially if it is like an uber or something. In US is really rude not to tip and i am not sure about oxford. Just tried to tip a lady by card and she was super confused

What are some things you think that american shows and movies get wrong about US?

I am a Latin American gal now working with 3 americans, and here are two things I was totally wrong about the US bc of TV:

- School dress codes: I thought American students could wear whatever they wanted, including going to school in heels, miniskirts, wearing hats during classes… According to my friends, it is nothing like that lol. Schools actually usually have dress codes, and a student who wants to dress like Maddy from Euphoria or even like Regina George will probably get in trouble.

- Religion: i was under the impression religion in the US was like 1/3 of the population is Baptist, 1/3 Jewish, and 1/3 doesn’t care about religion. Actually, Jews aren’t even 10% of the American population, there are states with large Catholic followers (due to Latin American immigration, but not only, many Americans of Irish and Italian descent are Catholic), and there are also many other large Protestant denominations.

It makes me wonder, what more we (non-americans) get wrong about US bc of TV?

Visiting student renting a room - showering 2 times a day is an aspect of my culture ok for locals?

Hi guys! I’ll be living in England for a few months and since the renting is pretty expensive and my income is in my home country’s currency (so a huge part of it basically disappears when converted into pounds 😭), the best option for me seems to be renting a room.

I’ve found lots of lovely options, but here’s the thing: in my culture, we usually shower about twice a day, at least. It’s not really about the climate either, we’d still do this in a house with no heating in Iceland.

A friend of mine who is also an exchange student, but in France, has been having some issues with her host family because of this cultural difference. They think showering that often is pointless and unreasonable.

I’m willing to adapt to a lot of things. For example, I’d have no problem following dietary restrictions that aren’t part of my lifestyle if my host thinks i should follow them (halal, kosher, vegan, etc.), or even avoiding speaking my native language at home when I’m on the phone with my parents or boyfriend. But showering twice a day is something I’d really like to keep doing.

So here’s my question: would this be a problem for most people in England? Is this something I should bring up with a potential host in advance?

My second day living in Oxford: bad experiences + needing tips to blend

So today was my second day at Oxford, where i will be living for the next months. The city is beautiful and 99% of the people are super sweet and kind, but i had some problems and therefore need some tips.

This afternoon, when i was waiting for a bus, an old lady start huging me in a very sus way, i didnt knew what to do because i didnt wanted to be rude, but them she quickly put her hands under my tshirt and i kinda had to runaway. When i got calm, i realized that my purse was open. Nothing valuable was taken, only some birthcontrol pills, but still really bad.

Now i was going to buy some snacks and i found a guy laid on the streets rolling an talking to himself. I took my phone to send a voice message to my boyfriend whos still in my country and the guy got super pissed hearing my non-english language and start to scream at me.

At the market, this other guy start following me to lots of sections and got me really creepied out. I had to take an uber back to my hotel because i was really afraid.

I dont wear jewlery or expensive clothes. Today i was wearing linen dark green pants, linen crude shirt, nike snickers and a small purse. Not even wearing a necklace or something like that. I am white (more galician then british but still) and either way oxford seems to be a very diverse city so i dont think the problem that made me a target to those creepys is my skin tone. I am really really tall so i shouldnt be seen as such an easy target, should i? In one of the incidents i could clearly be identified as a foreigner because i was talking in a different language, but i was in completelly silence on the other 2, and also i heard tons of people speaking tons of idioms and having no problems. All the 3 situations happened in safe areas of the city

Seriously, what is wrong with me? How can i blend it so those people dont come after me?

I soon will be on a 11 hours flight to London. If you see this, please make a quick pray for me to have courage, a safe flight with no turbulences and be able to keep calm during those hours!

Is Norwich a safe place for a foreign woman to travel alone?

I will be visiting UK soon for the first time and i would really like to spend some days at Norwich because i am very interested in medieval history.

I heard is a safe place, but ofc women must always be more careful unfortunatelly + i also saw a blog with a bunch of dark forests and dark places telling creepy stories and got a bit afraid 🫣.

So i just like to know if you think it would be safe for me to go alone. Also might be worth mentioning that I am from a country where women tend to be highly sexualized by media and even some hollywood movies and, because of this, in the past some men from other european countries felt they could act in ways that made me really uncomfortable, but i dont know how british men act.

Anyways, is it ok for a women to visit? And do you have any tips?

Have anyone else noticed how many queer/queer frendly/feminist subs are not allowing politics anymore, especially the israeli genocide?

I've been noticing this pattern over the last month. A lot of subs that used to have a pretty clear leftist bias are now trying really hard to be "centrist."

The other day, I had a post removed from a pop music queer fans sub because I posted about Billie Eilish criticizing Trump because it was "too political." Another queer sub I used to participate in doesn't allow discussions about the Trump administration or the genocide in Gaza anymore. Posts get deleted immediately because "it's not a political sub." (Bro, being queer nowadays is, in itself, political.)

Today, in another sub that used to be about anti-racist feminism and people were laughing about the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the possibility of invading Iran. Comments pushing back against that or criticizing Republican administrations weren't allowed because "politics causes division." (Yeah, because apparently being feminist and anti-racist isn't political at all.) But somehow people cheering for Trump and celebrating the deaths of millions of Middle Eastern people wasn't considered political enough to be removed.

All of these subs used have its users mostly openly anti-Trump and against the genocide. Really, there used to be posts about these topics almost every day.

Has anyone else noticed something like this?

We talk a lot about haley's love interests, but i am curious, what is your favorite alex's boyfriend?

For me is Sanjay. I really like the enemy to lovers arc, how he was ready to give up something so important for him to prove he really liked her and how at the end of the day they pushed it other up.

Bill, the firefighter, is cool as well and gorg. Ben is kinda mid, he creepys me a bit. I really hated the controlling chef she dated for one ep

But anyways the worst one for me is Arvin by far. She was clearly his second option + he was her professor, that is so wrong!
