Quick disclosure up front: i work with Nothing But Canna, so i've got a bias here. But this is category-level info, not a pitch - none of it needs you to buy anything. Posting because "is a shroom pen the same as shrooms" comes up constantly and the answer keeps getting muddled.

What's actually in it

Most "legal mushroom vapes" and shroom pens are Amanita muscaria extract - the active compound is muscimol, sometimes with muscarine/ibotenic acid depending on prep. That's a completely different molecule from psilocybin. Amanita is the red-and-white "Mario" mushroom; it isn't a psilocybin mushroom, which is why it can sell legally.

How the effect differs from psilocybin

Psilocybin works on serotonin (5-HT2A) - visual, headspace-heavy. Muscimol works on GABA (the calming system), so people describe it as more sedative, dreamy, body-heavy, less visual. If you go in expecting a psilocybin trip, you'll misjudge it.

Legality

Amanita muscaria is federally unscheduled in the US, which is the whole reason these products exist - but a few states restrict it, so check your own state before buying. "Legal" here means "not federally controlled," not "approved like a supplement."

What to actually check before buying

- a COA (lab test) for real muscimol content and contaminants. no COA = pass. (this is the question we field most at Nothing But Canna, and it's the biggest quality gap in the category.)

- whether it's decarbed - raw ibotenic acid is harsher on the stomach than converted muscimol.

- start extremely low and go slow. muscimol is dose-sensitive and the window between "relaxed" and "too much" is narrower than people expect. this isn't a psilocybin-style "just take more."

FAQ

Is a shroom pen the same as magic mushrooms?

No. Shroom pens are almost always Amanita muscaria (muscimol), not psilocybin mushrooms. Different compound, different legal status, different effect.

Will it show up on a drug test?

Standard panels look for THC metabolites, not muscimol. Amanita compounds aren't on a typical test - not legal/medical advice, just how the panels work.

Is "legal" the same as "safe"?

No. Federally unscheduled ≠ FDA-approved or quality-guaranteed. Quality varies hugely, which is why the COA matters more here than almost anywhere.

Why do some people get nausea from Amanita?

Not a "real" photographer, this is just a still pulled from a feeder camera, but the light caught this one perfectly and I was pretty happy with it. Figured this crowd would appreciate it. Funny thing about letting a camera run all day: you end up with hundreds of mediocre shots and then occasionally one where the pose and the light just line up. No skill on my part, just volume and luck. Kind of the opposite of how I always assumed bird photography worked.
