Best way to learn advanced valuation topics (PPA, Goodwill, 409A, Fairness Opinions, etc.)?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working in valuation and financial modeling, and I want to become proficient in the more specialized areas of valuation that are commonly handled by Big 4 valuation teams and independent valuation firms.

My goal is to learn these topics thoroughly—not just the theory, but also the practical side, including financial models, assumptions, methodologies, Excel workbooks, and how real client reports are prepared.

Here's what I want to master:

  • Purchase Price Allocation (ASC 805 / IFRS 3)
  • Goodwill Impairment Testing (IAS 36 / ASC 350)
  • Trademark & Brand Valuation
  • Customer Relationship Valuation (MPEEM)
  • Technology / Intellectual Property Valuation (Relief-from-Royalty, etc.)
  • Financial Instrument Valuation (convertible notes, options, derivatives, debt/equity instruments)
  • Fairness Opinions
  • Real Estate Valuation
  • ESOP / 409A Valuations

I'm looking for recommendations on:

  • The best books or textbooks
  • Online courses (paid or free)
  • YouTube channels
  • Universities or certification programs
  • Practice case studies
  • Sample valuation reports
  • Excel model templates
  • Firms that publish good technical papers
  • Any resources that helped you become job-ready in these areas

If you've worked in Big 4 valuation, Duff & Phelps/Kroll, Houlihan Lokey, EY, PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, BDO, RSM, Alvarez & Marsal, or similar firms, I'd especially appreciate hearing how you learned these skills and what resources you'd recommend.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Profile evaluation

12th - 89%

10th -73%

I know the grades look pretty bad and I do work in valuations in a very small ca firm which has like 2 people but we get to manage everything from a to z and have been freelancing in it as well but i dont know what else to do to improve my profile.

I am tryna be active on linkedin

Get more freelance clients from all around the world

Looking for a full time role as well

I have a few certifications under my belt as well alot of GT and EY

I know I have to get around 700+ for my gmat scores. Could someone guide me for the better institutes for that as well?

Completely losing hope trying to break into BVSL. Is the market just this brutal?

Honestly just need to vent because I am so burnt out. I’ve been freelancing for about 9 months now, grinding away on DCF, market comps, and precedent transactions. I’m an ACCA student but might leave it if I dont get a full time role.

This is the exact field I want to be in, but trying to land a solid full-time valuation or M&A role in the Delhi/NCR area (Gurugram/Noida) feels literally impossible right now.

I recently had a director-level interview that went completely downhill—the model I was working with was an absolute mess, and it just completely shattered my confidence.

It feels like I'm hitting a brick wall no matter how much effort I put in. Has anyone else been in this boat recently? How do you keep going when you've just lost all hope in the job search?

I think I’m bisexual but have zero experience and I’m terrified to put myself out there. Any advice?

Hi guys! So... I think I might be bisexual?

The thing is, I’ve never actually had an experience with a woman, which makes it really hard for me to even acknowledge it. I’m completely in the closet—none of my friends or family know, and I don't have anyone in my personal life who is queer.

Even though I haven't dated women, I constantly have the urge to watch Thai GL (Girls' Love) shows. I just feel like their love is so beautiful and comes from such a place of kindness. I love how gentle women are with each other. I also follow a lot of lesbian YouTubers who have really helped me identify with myself. I watch Kassandra Riley almost every day, and I also love Paige and Holly, and Kristen McKenzie.

Despite feeling this way, I’ve never actually put it into practice. Whenever I try to put myself out there or set something up, I end up canceling at the last minute. I get so paranoid and genuinely feel like I’m going to get kidnapped or something awful will happen. I think the fear of the unknown just totally takes over.

I really don’t know what to do or how to get past this anxiety. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice would be so appreciated!

joh ki I was excited to learn even though it was more on the legal side pr seekhna psnd h mujhe iss field mein and then 20 min ki Khushi and after that exactly at 8.40 he texts me after that after discussing internally we have decided not to make an offer.

Pr kyu kaise kha se??? Humne itna time waste kyu Kiya phir? Kya hua ek dum se? Then I asked him and I haven't received a reply he needs people i have been looking for a switch for months!!

And now its all this then I cried kyuki I told my sister thar i got an offer after months of searching and I am gonna say yes

because I said to the director give me a day to think about it he said okay think about it kyuki yeh almost same pay pr h just added bonuses for +2 lpa now everyone is telling me koi ni aur kuch acha hogya and gods protection pr idk kya hi ho rha h 🫠🫠🫠
