Needed - an API enabled weather station or thermometer that goes to -60F/-51C or lower.

Live in the middle of Alaska. Winter gets down to -55F. I need an API enabled weather station or thermometer that can go lower than -60F (-51C) So far all I can find are units that go to -40F. That is just another day that ends in a Y for Alaska.

Last winter I helped with an online nature camera watching Alaskan birds in deep cold. We pulled weather data from AccuWeather and displayed it as an overlay. Often the local readings at the camera feeding station were lower than what AccuWeather was reporting. (We have an AccuRite digital rated to -58F) Conclusion is displaying our own data would be more accurate.

I have spent days looking at weather stations. The lowest specifications are not easy to find since stations have lots of probe options. -40F seems the lowest.  This would support why all the AccuWeather data was off if CWOP stations are limited to -40F

I know from previous experience all electronics are rated to -40F because that is the lowest the freezers at Underwriters Laboratories go.

Emailed technical support at Ambient Weather and ACCuRite.  Both confirmed -40f was the lowest their stations would go. Ambient said theirs would still read below -40F but accuracy would be poor.

Anyone knowing of an API enabled weather station or thermometer that goes to -60F/-51C – the info would be much appreciated.

Anyone polish their rifle chamber?

I seem to recall something from decades ago where this was once a thing for bolt guns. (all my decades of competition were with the M1a or M1 Garand). I recall hearing 'Leave it (chamber) alone to make the chamber as tight as possible. Some also said leave it alone - lets the brass grip the chamber and put less pressure on the bolt when firing. Looking around online - I see the same argument for mirror polishing.

I'm inclined to leave good enough alone.

This question is for shooters that have done it or folks who have assembled barreled actions.

Ideas for new camber flags - funny, cute, witty, a tad rude?

I am an RSO who cannot spell Camber, Cambler, Chembler, .....Chamber!!! Got it!!

Have been passing these out these 'Remove before Pew Pew' chamber flags and running low. My target audience for this new batch is a machine gun club and informal long range shooting sand pit. Both groups are excellent on the main rules - chamber flags have not caught on with them. I am thinking the right amount of humor will entice them to want to put them in.

Remove before Arming

Remove before Launch

For a Good Time Remove Me

Clean Me - Dammit!

Could make a 6" flag 'Peter Meter' or "Fisherman's Flag' that is wrong. Marked 1-12" with inch marks at every 1/2 inch.

Could also make it useful - like a true 6" ruler.

Print it in Ukraine? Other Language?

"Have a Nice Impact" with smiley face.

If it Seats it Yeets

Rectal Use Only

Ask me about my lousy shooting

Chamber Dipstick (with markings)

Check Suppressor (this, to remind me it comes lose now and then)

Coast Guard awards contract for construction of housing and maintenance support facility in Seward, Alaska > United States Coast Guard News > Press Releases

On the East Coast you will find a US Coast Guard station about every 60 miles or so. Eventually Alaska will have something like this in every major coastal city. Money well spent to protect and support local fishing industries.

Trying to Mod abandoned sub. Cannot get my 2FA to work

The Community Request and Resource Hub at redditrequest has me stumped. The 2FA requirement is not clearing even though I have 2FA on, and have received the notification congratulating me on using 2FA.

I have the Authentication app. Works great. Followed directions, entered the code and gotten the green 'Completed'. In my Settings it shows 2FA as on, and only option it gives me is to turn 2FA off.

Two days of every combination of turning 2FA on, logging out, coming back in using it - I cannot get that requirement at redditrequest to clear.

Seemed like a good idea at the time

My Covid gun. Hundreds of hours removing milspec coating then cleanup of parts to get a shinny brass or copper plating on them. Spent most of my life on the ocean - always loved heavy brass things! Scope is early 1950's Sears J.C. Higgins cleaned up and brass plated. Gisele G2S two stage trigger. Wood furniture - guy who made that retired. Was a fun project. Shoots awesome. Starts a conversation at the range.

Not sure how the wife will deal with this puppy once I pass. That's why I'm calling it cursed.

Edit - upper and lower are War Dog matched set.

Is this a problem?

Decided to borescope my match rifle. Got some awesome Match ammo from the 1950's and figured might as well use them and reload the brass. The beginning lands and grooves seem perfect. Should I take a bronze brush and work it more?

What causes this?

Solved!

The gunsmith who built it says 'rust'. The owner agrees. Its a purpose built rifle that has seen plenty of rain on multi day goat, sheep and other hunts all over Alaska. The owner is hard core. Not a $5k rifle made to look at.

Me - I transitioned all my hunting to Ruger stainless bolt guns starting around 1992 - 223, 243, 308, 338. The match rifles get treated like royalty after use. 'Rust' was on my radar.

***********************************************************************************************************************

Not my rifle.

This is how it looks after cleaning.

7 year old rifle. Never met corrosive ammo.

Was scoping for an accuracy issue and discovered this. Pitting in 120 degrees of the barrel in the first 4 inches. 7 year old low mileage - might have 350 rounds though it. I searched the internet expecting to find a nice web site with pictures explaining what different issues were - 90% of what I clicked on sent to a company selling borescope, or online posts with a scope pic asking the same as me, what is this? Just not a pic of my issue.

If you know of a place that shows issues and causes - please link.

Reloads work - Factory ammo no longer fits

So, firearm is a 6 year old 280 Ackley Improved very custom rifle. Suddenly factory ammo does not fit. 5 boxes (100rds) of Hornady Precision Hunter 162gr ELD-X - the bolt would not close. The five boxes are two years old. My handloads are also ELD-X and they chamber, fire and extract normal operation and perfect.

Rifle has less than 250rds though it.

This video is from same stuff that the bolt refused to close on - Hornady Precision Hunter 162gr ELD-X - bought today, just a different lot. This lot did chamber with some difficulty and extract. Gonna see if we can scare a box from a different manufacture tomorrow.

6 years ago could not find ammo. I did standard ladder load testing with chronograph, found a nice hunting load and nice target load over two summers of testing. Never went past max. No misfires, no unusual anything. Brass never used more than 3 times doing the load workup.

The brass I made for hunting and match target - all done with new brass. The ammo I made - was all chamber tested to easily load and extract.

I should have this rifle in my hands by Friday. Any ideas on what this could be? I do have a bore scope. If you have seen my posts - been reloading since the late 70's for high power rifle competition and Alaskan hunting. Only time I have seen something like this - an M60 with the front of a broken shell neck - removed with a broken shell extractor.

Keep in mind - my ammo is seating, functioning and firing fine. Why would factory be an issue???

Anyone seen this before?

Any idea when the new Model 8260 will be in stores?

My 35 year old Dremel finally died.

I was looking at the comparison chart between 8250 and 8260 that is electronic with an app. It does not appear to be listed for sale anywhere. The one or two places that do have a $700 price tag to placemark the listing and none in stock. Please do not obsess about the price.

Here it is on the Dremel site: DREMEL® 8260 Cordless Tools | Dremel

Anyone know of a M77 Mark-II adapter for the boat paddle stocks to add a tripod?

Have the Ruger Mark II M77 stainless with boat paddle stock and do not want to drill holes to install a picatinny rail or QD stud for a tripod. Was hoping someone invented a slick adapter that captured the original stainless forward sling point - but - not finding anything online. I can't possibly be the first person to want this?

People like this - I don't know what to call them...

Me: Hello, I would like to close this auction on your ($300 item - electronic repair part) but the only option is USPS Ground Advantage, that is too slow for my needs. Can you send Priority Mail?

Seller: Sure Can!

Me: Goes straight to auction site and buys it.

Seller: Thank for buying my item! I am on vacation and won't be able to send it until next week.

Me: I wish you had put that in your auction or mentioned it earlier

How can people be so oblivious?

Worried about your nice match rifle getting lost or stolen?

I was at an Alaskan rifle range, small town, trusting - everyone was at the 200yd line when an ATV with helmeted rider and passenger stopped at the firing line. 5-6 seconds later they sped away with 8 pistol and a rifle. Never caught.

Now, I find myself using the 300yd municipal range that has no range officers, no cameras, no access control and totally open to the public all day long. I can go out to 1200yds in a different place - but again, that place is popular and has had thefts. I lock up my expensive gear in the vehicle before going down range...... but that would not stop someone seeing my goods and busting a window.

So, I ordered a spacer for my PRS stock and with a Forstner bit made a 1.25" hole just deep enough for an Apple Air Tag. Still going to lock my stuff up. I feel a ton better knowing if I have to call the police I can probably tell them what road and direction my rifle is going. Be handy for traveling.

Actually pretty easy to hide an Air Tag inside the stock on most normal rifles. PRS chassis is a challenge.

ATN TICO Clip on Thermal Imager - attaching to scope directly.

Looking at the ATN TICO Gen 6. Rifle has no rail to install this in front of the scope. Problem is my current is scope is a very nice Leupold Mk4-HD 8-33x-56. ATN only makes adapters for 40, 44 and 50mm (link here ATN TICO Scope Mounting System | Up to $18.00 Off 5 Star Rating w/ Free S&H)

My question - can I use something like this?

ZEISS Monocular Adapter Ring for 3x12B Mono 528379-0000-000 B&H

or this?

Bering Optics Clip-On Adapter Kit for Night Probe/Night BE80402

Contacting a human at ATN is not easy.

20 MOA elevation rings are too much - what are my options?

Next weekend I am shooting PRS 1,000 yards using my very accurate 308 rifle, suppressor and handloads. The rifle has a 20 MOA cantilever scope mount , Leupold Mk-4HD 6-24x which has been great for firing subsonic ammo.

Yesterday I take rifle to the range to sight in with match ammo - I don't have enough drop. 12" high and won't go lower at 100yds. Yikes!! That makes 9" high at 300yds.

My short term solution to get through next weeks is sight in with standard rings, tomorrow.

What are my long term options? I would really like to keep firing subsonic ammo at great distances - have a place just 4 miles away that gives me 600-1200 yds depending on what the river is doing. (NO, not competing at 1,000 yds with subs!!!)

  1. Not many 34mm 10 moa ring sets or bases on the market. 34mm rings for some reason seem to come in 20 moa or 0 moa. Only 10 moa I found was Mile High - and their cost is a mile high, $500+. That is not me - not for an annual match.
  2. Shim? Always avoided that. Sounds iffy.
  3. Other?

Yah, Yah, just loosen up the ring screws, turn the scope upside down and use it for 'hold under'. That's the ticket, right?

Edit - thank you to everyone who nailed it about zero stop! Especially for the quick responses. Had I not installed that 20 MOA base, I would have not known of this feature. My other Leupold's do not have this.

When I searched this issue here, I had no useful hits. I am going to leave my noob question here so others can learn!!!

Looking for 2008 TVSF State Fair T-Shirt "Pirates of the Carrots and Beans" in 2xl or 1xl

Family member won the contest to name the state fair theme submitting "Pirates of the Carrots and Beans" in 2008. She had just 1 shirt to remember it by. It's her favorite. And quite thread bare after 18 years. I'd like to replace it for her. I know some folks have a collection of these. If you have one of these 2008 shirts in 2xl or 1xl and willing to part with it - I'd like to make it worth your while. Lets start a chat!

I read the subreddit rules - kinda shocked no Kestrel info popped out. If it is there - it isn't obvious.

I spent decades and decades doing and running NRA Highpower Rifle competition (200/300/600yds with M1a and Mouse Gun (AR-15) in 'as issued condition') Earned a slot on my services national shooting team back in the 90's. Love doing long shots at varmints. My longest deer was 630yds.

There is a group doing PRS 1000yd shooting some distance away. I would love to get involved - better yet - start a group in my area (Fairbanks, Alaska) I took a 5 hour PRS introductory course and learned about the Kestrel. I am 70+ and have always judged windage by what my face felt and the leaves and grass were doing downrange. I will probably only fire 1 or 2 matches per years unless I can get the ball rolling in my area.

The question: Do I really need a Kestrel? The 5hr intro class folks seemed to leave the impression you would not competitive without one that connects to your smart phone - both doing all the math for you. Am I truly at a disadvantage not having Kestrel?

I seem to be able to mentally calculate drop and windage the past 59 years - sure, there have been failures on paper targets. But I always made the important shots on game animals (the idea of having to track a wounded animal for many miles hauling it out on my back is real motivator to make a 1 shot clean kill. (started competition shooting at 11 back in 1966)

I own two chronographs - Magnetospeed and LabRadar - so my velocity is on target to compute bullet drop.

I'm really skeptical. The firing line is usually covered. Berms left and right. Just how accurate is wind where I am sitting relevant to what is happening down range?

If I really should have one - which model?
