I don’t know if everyone already knew he was supposed to be a reference to this, but I’m shocked at finding it out now.

Personally, I was really dazzled by it and its uniqueness. You can feel Kaufman's weird and surreal style that I myself was first introduced to in Eternal Sunshine. The premise felt so fresh. All the performances are fantastic. So many fun sequences too, the opening scene is beautiful. I understand why this movie might not be for everyone for how weird it is and how nearly all characters are really unlikable, but I personally really loved it.
