Was Razia Sultan (1983) home to India’s first on-screen lesbian moment?

Long before Fire (1996), Kamal Amrohi’s Razia Sultan featured a scene between Razia (Hema Malini) and Khakun (Parveen Babi) that many viewers have read as one of Indian cinema’s earliest depictions of desire between two women. The moment was never confirmed by the filmmakers, but it was later removed when the film aired on Doordarshan, making this scene as fascinating for what it suggests as for what it leaves unsaid. Whether you see it as romance, longing, or subtext, it remains one of the most intriguing queer moments in Bollywood history. Have you watched Razia Sultan? Do you think this counts as India’s first on-screen lesbian moment?

Indian lesbians giving 0 f's to homophobia as usual.

In the late 1990s, when lesbian lives in India were pushed into silence, shame, and invisibility, CALERI (the Campaign for Lesbian Rights) chose to speak loudly and publicly. Formed during the protests against the attacks on Fire, CALERI became one of India’s first groups to openly fight for lesbian rights, visibility, and dignity. Through protests, manifestos, poetry, and collective action, they challenged both political hostility and the silence within mainstream movements. Their struggle was not just about visibility, it was about creating space for queer women to exist, speak, and be heard on their own terms.

I listened to this audiotape in YouTube between samik and a lady where they both came off to be close friends, and later on an interview of the lady alleging samik to be a womanizer. Samik has been threatening her for blackmailing him to expose his promiscuous activities with other women who all have apparently reached out to this lady with evidence against samik. Now, youtube comments as usual, bashed the lady for not going to the police, but I am certain how impossible that task might seem to hurl any politician to justice (regardless of the party), particularly when it's samik who allegedly buttered both sides of the bread.

I am attaching the tapes in sequence. I was among the bunch who wanted samik to lead, but now ig I have changed my mind. What are your thoughts?
