Help needed: How to best turn Adrax and Vulkan He’stan into "Generic" Space Marine Captains.

Hi everyone,

I am planning a Soul Drinkers army project and would like to use Salamanders rules. Their army lists make use of several of my favorite Space Marine squads, and Vulkan He'stan also has a spear which is an added bonus with the whole Soul-spear lore of the Soul Drinkers.

I want both characters for this project and will need to kitbash and/or convert these minis to serve as proxy's.

My goals and restrictions:

No Salamanders theme: I want no dragon scales, flames, or nocturne iconography.

Tournament Legal: Must be 100% official Games Workshop plastic, use 40mm bases, and maintain strict WYSIWYG profiles (Adrax: Thunder Hammer/Hand Flamer | He'stan: Relic Spear/Gauntlet Flamer).

Distinct Silhouette: I would prefer them to be easily identifiable as these two specific characters on the tabletop.

No major sculpting: I want to avoid Green Stuff as much as possible by using bitz from other kits where needed. Armor joints, webbing and cables are fine but I would prefer to not have to sculpt large sections of armor or entire cloaks as I'm not a great sculpter.

What I need help with: What is the cleanest way to achieve this? Should use other kits or try to shave down the molded chest heraldry without ruining the armor of the existing minis and just put a Dremel to the Dragon scale cloaks?

Which generic GW kits would you choose for bits?

Would you use the Adrax and He'stan minis as a base or proxy different minis?

Thanks in advance for any tips, kit suggestions, or pictures of similar builds!

Soul Drinkers Squad and Company markings?

Hi,

I'm in the early planning stage for a Soul Drinkers army project and have come across a bit of a stumbling block when it comes to chapter markings as I can't seem to find any reliable info on it at all.

I've seen some people using white squad markings on their minis, but is this canon? If yes, do they use the explody-symbol for fire support or the upside-down V?

Do Intercessors use the arrow pointing upwards?

Do Sergeants and Veterans use differently colored helmets?

Do the Soul Drinkers use numerals or Roman numerals to display squad numbers?

What about Company colors or numbers, do they use that?

It says in the wiki that they use gold and bone colors on their pauldron trim, but where does the bone come in? I don't think I've ever seen artwork of anything besides gold used.

Edit: Just studied the art of Chapter Master Sarpedon of the Soul Drinkers before his mutation a bit closer, and both he and the battle brothers in the background clearly have bone colored pauldron trim..

Any help or links would be appreciated.

Does this look like the Dragonspears armour color?

Sorry about the random backpack, but I've been trying to make this elusive color and don't know what it even is, so a backpack was less work than an entire marine while experimenting. I feel like this is close, but what do you think?

Skull Bearers Marine

Decided to paint up a test mini for the Skull Bearers as they are a part of the war for Armageddon. I didn't want to go too yellow, but might have pushed it too much towards brown.

Thoughts on this color scheme?

Silver Skulls Lieutenant

Knocked this guy out in half a day to see if I could paint Silver Skulls to a good tabletop quality quickly. Not my finest work, but it was fast.

Company Heroes

I actually managed to finish painting an entire squad of Space Marines.

Company Heroes Veteran

Trying to dial in the paint scheme for Armageddon. Decided to keep the right bionic hand steel since he's not actually wearing a gauntlet.

Should I paint the fist red?

Working on a Company Heroes Veteran. He doesn't have a gauntlet, and I'm wondering if I should paint the bionic hand red or leave it steel?

Single color paint for chest aquila/imperialis?

Edit: Thanks for your suggestions, I think I'll have to stick to mixing.

So the 'Eavy Metal team mixes Screamer Pink and Khorne Red to create the base paint for the Imperial Fists Imperialis, and while I could easily make my own batch in a mixing bottle I was wondering if anyone knew of a paint brand that carries a color similar to this just as-is?

Tutorial for painting yellow without Contrast Paints?

Does anyone know any good tutorials for painting Imperial Fists without using Imperial Fists contrast paints?

As much as I love the look of Imperial Fist Contrast over pink primer and a white zenithal it doesn't offer me enough control. It's stupidly hard to fix mistakes whenever I accidentally get paint on top of the contrast layer so I'm hoping to find a good recipe that uses regular acrylics.

Test mini

I've been into this hobby for 25 years but this is the first time I've ever painted an Ultramarine.

Is this good enough to join your club?

Can someone sell me on the Ultramarines?

I posted a thread in r/spacemarines asking for advice on which Chapter I should start for 11th edition, and a number of people suggested the Ultramarines.

Honestly, they have pretty much everything I should want in a Chapter:

  • great lore
  • a solid paint scheme
  • broad unit variety
  • minimal need for kitbashing
  • and an aesthetic where almost the entire range works straight out of the box.

The problem is that I’ve just never connected with them creatively and have actively avoided them for almost 25 years. When I was 10, Ultramarines were considered “the boring Chapter,” and somehow that idea got lodged permanently in my brain.

Meanwhile, I’ve bounced from project to project trying to find the perfect fit:

  • Space Wolves burned me out with endless conversions and “wolfifying”
  • Imperial Fists taught me yellow is suffering
  • Raptors made me frustrated with how much of the range clashes with their tactical aesthetic
  • Black Templars and Flesh Tearers taught me that I absolutely hate painting black armor

At this point, after failing to fully commit to basically every army I’ve started, I’m wondering if maybe the Ultramarines are “boring” in the same way a perfectly engineered hammer is boring: they just work.

So I figured I’d ask the people who genuinely love them:

Why are the Ultramarines the best Chapter, and why should I finally give them a try after 25 years of avoiding them?

Which Chapter to choose for 11th edition?

Hello, and welcome to my unnecessarily long post.

I’ve collected Space Marines on and off for 25 years, but I’ve never managed to paint more than about 1000 points before getting bored, burning out, and starting over. Maybe this will finally be the edition where I stick with one army.

My first real army after returning to the hobby as an adult was the Space Wolves. They’re still my favorite Chapter lore-wise, but I completely burned myself out trying to make every model look appropriately “wolfy” through endless kitbashing, sculpting fur, and adding beards. Eventually the hobby side became exhausting instead of fun, so onto the shelf they went.

Next came the Dark Angels, where I ran into many of the same problems — just slightly toned down. Too many robes, too much conversion work, and too much pressure to make everything feel thematic.

After those two failures, I decided to go in the complete opposite direction and started a Raptors army. They were genuinely fun to paint, and I loved the grounded military aesthetic and pragmatic lore. They also became the first army I managed to push beyond 1000 points. Eventually, though, I became frustrated with how many Space Marine kits simply don’t fit the cleaner tactical style the Raptors are known for. After two conversion-heavy burnouts, I had no interest in converting half the range again, so onto the shelf they went too.

Then came the Black Templars, which taught me an important lesson: I hate painting black armor. Highlighting black is tedious, time-consuming, and difficult to make satisfying. Apparently I needed to learn this lesson twice, because I later painted some Flesh Tearers and immediately rediscovered how much I dislike black pauldrons, black backpacks, and black Death Company armor. At this point, Chapters like Raven Guard, Iron Hands, and Deathwatch are basically ruled out by default.

Somewhere in between I painted a small Retributors force, but their doctrine and markings never felt like they translated neatly into the Primaris era. They feel much better suited to Kill Team than a full army. I also tried painting a couple of Emperor's Spears after reading Spear of the Emperor, but I struggled to find paints that both looked right and were enjoyable to work with.

I painted five Howling Griffons before losing the will to continue. I painted some Crimson Fists, but found them too monotonous. Painting Silver Skulls taught me that I also strongly dislike highlighting metallic armor.

Next came the Imperial Fists. They look amazing, but yellow armor is incredibly unforgiving to paint. Every mistake shows and fixing errors is a pain.

I’ve never really connected with the Ultramarines creatively, despite respecting their place in the setting.

The White Scars are probably my second favorite Chapter lore-wise after the Space Wolves, but painting white armor is miserable.

And the Salamanders? They seem fun to play, but for reasons I can’t fully explain, I’ve just never been able to warm up to them. Possibly childhood trauma.

So after 25 years, countless abandoned projects, and repeatedly learning the same lessons the hard way, I’m still searching for the Chapter that strikes the perfect balance between:

  • good lore
  • a fun paint scheme
  • a manageable hobby workload
  • and an aesthetic I won’t get tired of after 1000 points.

Any suggestions?
