[Grand Seiko Snowflake SBGA211] - Spring Drive

Meet the Grand Seiko 'Snowflake'. I bought this watch in 2018. This was my first Grand Seiko and my most expensive watch at that time. After 8 years, I still love the watch like I did on the very first day.

The dial has a snow like texture inspired by wind-swept snow around the Hotaka mountains near Grand Seiko’s Shinshu Watch Studio (And hence named 'Snowflake' by watch lovers - this is not an official name from Grand Seiko).

Interestingly, the dial has a story. While developing the Snowflake, Grand Seiko's craftsmen searched their archives and discovered a textured dial sample made for a 56GS from 1971. That old design helped provide the technical basis for creating the Snowflake texture. The dial making is labor-intensive - Grand Seiko says more than 80 separate processes are required to finished the Snowflake dial. The applied hour indices are multi faceted and polished to perfection to achieve the mirror like shine.

The case (41mm) and bracelet is titanium and weighs only 100grams and is Zaratsu polished - hence very comfortable to wear and elegantly finished.

The heat-blued hands provide the perfect contrast.

The watch houses the amazing 9R65 spring drive movement with 72 hours of power reserve and accuracy rated to ±15 seconds per month.

Spring Drive combines mechanical power with quartz precision. A traditional mainspring generates electricity to power a quartz crystal, which precisely controls the movement’s speed through an electromagnetic brake mechanism. A spring drive's signature is the gliding seconds hand - the watch doesn't tick nor produce any ticking sound. To me, the blue seconds hand gliding across the snowy white dial evokes the feel of a lone skier sweeping across a snow covered mountain side.

The Grand Seiko “Snowflake” is arguably the watch that popularized Grand Seiko to the wider world and brings together nature, technology and traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

[Citizen Campanola Kokiake] – A Quartz Grand Complication for Mere Mortals

This is one of the most wonderful over-engineered quartz watches I own: the Citizen Campanola Kokiake 6772-T007902TA (CTR57-1001).

History :

Citizen Cal. 6770 was originally manufactured in 1997 and was the world's first quartz Grand Complication movement. This was first used in the Citizen Exceed Grand Complication wristwatch launched in 1999.

Citizen later used the same movement in the Citizen Campanola Grand complication as a showcase for complicated watchmaking and traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The caliber 6772 is a later variant of the Cal 6770 and has the following functions:

  1. Minute Repeater (Electronic Chime)

  2. Perpetual Calendar

  3. Chronograph (12 hour)

  4. Moon Phase

  5. 24 hour indicator

  6. Date, Day, Month with leap year display

  7. Dual time ( minute-repeater and main hands can be configured to separate time zones)

Considering the functional density, engineering complexity and acoustic integration, the Caliber 6772 is widely regarded as a masterpiece of early 2000s Japanese watchmaking.

The appeal is not just about the maximal functions, the watch also showcases Japanese craftsmanship with the handpainted Kokiake urushi lacquer dial. Depending on the light, mine moves between red, burgundy and brown. It reportedly takes upto 3 months to create the urushi lacquer dial.

Of all the functions, I love the repeater the most. Press a button and different electronic chimes sound the hours, quarter-hours and minutes.

It's a substantial watch at 43mm case size and 16.5mm thick. It comes paired with a crocodile strap with folding clasp. Despite all the functions, the battery lasts 2 years.

The Kokiake was priced at ¥330,000 before tax - serious money for a Citizen quartz watch.

Although I own several mechanical watches, I’ve never ventured into mechanical perpetual calendars or minute repeaters. The prohibitive cost is one thing, but what worries me more is the complexity and potential cost of servicing and maintaining such a watch. I’d probably spend half my time worrying about dropping the watch or getting it anywhere near water.

That practicality is a big part of why I love this Campanola. It gives me a taste of a true grand complication without the intimidating ownership costs. To me, this watch showcases what Japanese complication can be, not Citizen trying to compete with the Swiss grand complication.

Almost a Grand Seiko - The Overlooked [Seiko Crown Special J14100]

One of my latest acquisitions - an early 1960s Seiko Crown Special Ref: J14100, with an unusually beautiful baby-rose/pink sunray dial.

The first Grand Seiko watch (Ref 3180) evolved from the Seiko Crown architecture. The Crown Special was positioned below Grand Seiko but above the regular Seiko Crown.

Movement & Case -

It comes with a manual wind Cal. 341 with 23 jewels, running at 18,000 vph and features hacking seconds.

Seiko Crown → 19/21 jewels

Seiko Crown Special → 23 jewels

First Grand Seiko 3180 → 25 jewels

Mine has a 35mm case size with an 80-micron gold filled case. The Crown Specials were priced around ¥10,000 in 1961, versus ¥25,000 for the First Grand Seiko(3180).

Another interesting aspect is the tiny eight-pointed star on the dial above 6'oclock. This indicates Seiko's “Special Dial” designation.

SD dials uses solid gold indices that are individually “planted” into the dial using pins—a technique called shokuji. Seiko introduced SD dials even before the first Grand Seiko. This pink-silver dial is a special dial and hence rarer than the more commonly available white, silver and champagne dials.

Historical Background:

Seiko’s rise to high-end watchmaking was driven partly by an unusual internal rivalry between its two factories (Suwa Seikosha vs Daini Seikosha).

Suwa developed the Crown and Crown Special family. The accuracy focused movement architecture of these watches provided the foundation for the First Grand Seiko in 1960.

Meanwhile, Daini developed the Seiko Cronos and Chronos special lines providing the movement architecture and foundations for first King Seiko in 1961.

Thus Seiko Crown Special and Seiko Cronos Special are fascinating parallel products of the same rivalry.

This internal competition pushed both factories toward increasingly sophisticated movements, better adjustment and higher precision—and ultimately helping create the legendary Grand Seiko vs King Seiko rivalry of the 1960s.

[The Citizen AQ4106-18X] - A quiet masterpiece from Citizen

The Citizen AQ4106-18X is a masterfully executed quartz high horology watch from Citizen.

When I first saw this watch, I was immediately drawn to it. The dial execution is simply stunning—the subtle gradient colour's of the dial, the warmth of the gold hands and indices, the dark grey titanium case, and the beautifully textured strap all come together perfectly.

But there's more to this watch than just looks. Below are the reasons why I think this is a genuine high horology watch from Citizen:

  1. The extraordinary Caliber A060 movement - Citizen introduced the Caliber A060 in 2015, it was the first perpetual-calendar quartz movement with accuracy rating of ±5 seconds per year. It also combined Eco-Drive, independent hour adjustment, power-reserve indication and automatic hand correction - a remarkably sophisticated movement.

In 2017, Longines matched the ±5 second per-year perpetual-calendar feat with their Conquest V.H.P. - the only other watch to achieve this feat.

  1. The stunning and sophisticated dial —( Hazy moon captured in Japanese washi paper)

The dial uses ultra-thin Japanese Tosa washi paper that lets light reach the Eco-Drive solar cell beneath. The dial colour shifts between earthy brown, olive green and warm golden tones as the light changes. This inspiration is from Japanese egasumi & Oborozuki moon (Hazy moon seen through mist). Gold-tone markers and hands paired with a DLC titanium case complete the design.

I love pairing this watch with khaki chinos and olive or cream polos. Its earthy tones work beautifully with both smart-casual and relaxed outfits, making it surprisingly versatile.

  1. Dark Grey Duratec titanium case

The dark grey case is made from Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium and treated with Duratect DLC (Diamond like Carbon). It gives the watch an understated, almost charcoal grey appearance. The watch is very lightweight and scratch resistant. One of the most comfortable watches I own. The dark case also provides the perfect frame for the spectacular dial as well !

  1. A very special and super comfortable Chari Happo leather Strap

Even the strap has a story. Chari-Happo is a rare Japanese goatskin leather whose roots go back to the Meiji era, when American leather specialist Charles “Charlie” Henninkel introduced Western tanning techniques to Japan.

“Chari” is said to derive from Charlie, while “Happo” refers to the leather being painstakingly kneaded by hand from multiple directions, creating its wonderfully deep, three-dimensional grain by shrinking the leather by 20%. The traditional Happo-momi technique has become so rare that it is reportedly practised by just one specialist craftsman and this is the first time such leather was used by citizen. The strap is a very soft, supple and comfortable on skin.

  1. Limited edition of 350 pieces

The AQ4106-18X was a limited edition release just 350 pieces worldwide thereby adding to its appeal.

Summary :

The AQ4106-18X feels like Citizen quietly showing off everything it does best: ±5-second-a-year precision, a perpetual calendar, Eco-Drive engineering, Tosa washi craftsmanship, hardened titanium and rare Chari-Happo leather.

Limited to 350 pieces, this watch seems to showcase cutting edge Japanese technology meeting centuries-old Japanese craft. Truly a masterpiece and perhaps Citizen at its very best.

The SBGJ005 (Mt. Iwate in Green) looks like a Grand Seiko GMT with a beautiful green dial. However, historically, it represents something much bigger: A watch that brought its legendary Hi-Beat heritage into the GMT era, foreshadowed the nature-inspired identity of modern Grand Seiko, and ultimately made history at the GPHG

Grand Seiko was already producing 36,000-vph watches in the late 1960s, most famously the automatic 61GS. But that 10-beat tradition eventually disappeared for four decades. Grand Seiko 36,000 vph finally returned in 2009 with Cal. 9S85 followed by the Cal. 9S86 in 2014.

The 9S86 was Grand Seiko’s first Hi-Beat 36,000 GMT movement, combining ten beats per second with a traveller’s GMT whose local hour hand can be adjusted independently. Years before Grand Seiko formalised its Twenty-Four Seasons concept (based on the traditional Japanese system of Sekki) , the SBGJ005 was already combining Japanese landscape, colour and mechanical watchmaking in the way that has since become central to the brand.

[Seiko Age of Discovery 6M13-0010] A Perpetual Calendar Dancing Hands Watch From The 1990s

Seiko Age of Discovery 6M13-0010 appeared around 1990 - 1992, with the collection commemorating 500 years since Columbus's 1492 voyage. The caseback is engraved with the Santa Maria - Columbus's flagship on his first Atlantic voyage. Its globe-inspired dial and the unusual case with projecting lugs appear to evoke the spokes of a ship's wheel, continuing the nautical theme.

But the real story is the Quartz Calibre 6M13. This isn't merely a perpetual calendar. Seiko programmed it to understand dates from 1400 to 2499—a thousand-year calendar spanning both the Julian calendar and Gregorian calendar systems.

When Europe changed calendars in 1582 from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian Calendar, October 4 was followed by October 15. October 5–14 effectively disappeared.

The 6M13 knows this.

Even better, everything is displayed without an LCD.

Rotate through its modes and the hour, minute and seconds hands reposition themselves to indicate the day, month and year. This theatrical movement earned these Seikos the nickname “Dancing Hands.”

It also has a conventional date display, daily alarm, programmable one-day alarm and battery-life warning.

There's something wonderfully excessive about it.

Seiko essentially built a 1,100-year calendar calculator, taught it about a 16th-century calendar reform, then made ordinary analogue hands display the results.

Wostok Precision Class - 22J (Calibre 2809)

Meet the Wostok Precision, powered by the 22-jewel Calibre 2809— a very interesting precision movement produced in the USSR.

Introduced around 1957 at the Chistopol Watch Factory, the 2809 has a fascinating origin story: its architecture was derived from the legendary Zenith Calibre 135, one of Switzerland's greatest chronometer movements.

The Soviets re-engineered the design, converted the subsidiary seconds to central seconds, and increased the jewel count to 22. Like the Zenith Cal 135, the enormous balance wheel dominates the movement. The idea was simple—give the oscillator plenty of inertia and build the movement around precision.

“Precision Class” and 22 jewels wasn't just marketing. The top 2809 is generally documented with a remarkable factory specification of around −10/+5 seconds per day in four positions. It beats at a traditional 18,000 vph, provides roughly 44 hours of power reserve with swan-neck fine regulation assembly. Most movements were nickel plated with presentation models gold /gild finished. Because these watches were expensive to produce and manufactured in low numbers, many became presentation / commemorative gifts from the Soviet government.

The Chistopol precision watches reportedly won a Grand Gold Medal at the Leipzig International Fair in 1962. Three years later the same factory became an official supplier to the Soviet Ministry of Defence.

Most vintage Japanese watch collectors know the first Grand Seiko - Ref. 3180. Two years after its 1960 debut, Citizen introduced its own serious attempt at a world-class precision wristwatch: the Citizen Chronometer 31 Jewels.

What makes this watch special is that Citizen developed an entirely new movement specifically around chronometry - the hand-wound Cal. 0400, a large 30mm, 31-jewel, 18,000-vph movement.

The size was deliberate: Citizen wanted room for both a large mainspring barrel and an enormous 13.5mm balance - the largest then used in a Japanese wristwatch. The reasoning was classic chronometer engineering: greater balance inertia makes the oscillator less susceptible to disturbances, while the barrel was designed to minimize torque variation as the mainspring unwound, helping maintain amplitude and therefore rate stability.

Citizen records this watch to have actually passed the 'Swiss Chronometer Superior Grade' chronometer testing standard — not merely an internally certified watch built to equivalent standards. For the 1961–73 Swiss standard, one of the headline requirements for wristwatches was a mean daily rate of −1/+10 seconds/day.

So how did it compare with the Grand Seiko 3180?

The GS 3180 was also an 18,000-vph hand-wound chronometer movement, but with 25 jewels, a large balance, movable stud and fine regulator.

The published daily-rate figures make an interesting comparison:

Citizen Chronometer: −1/+10 sec/day

Grand Seiko 3180: −3/+12 sec/day

So the Citizen actually had the tighter published rate window: 11 seconds versus 15.

That demonstrates how seriously Citizen approached the project.

This was physically a serious watch. At 37mm case size, the Chronometer was unusually large for a dress watch in 1962. The size was functional to host the purpose-built 30mm movement with the large balance and barrel required for chronometric stability. Combined with the 100-micron gold-filled/plated case, this was a serious flagship.

This also appears to be one of Citizen's earliest—and possibly the first watch to use the eagle medallion that would later become strongly associated with Citizen's highest-grade precision watches. The eagle became an enduring symbol of Citizen's pursuit of precision, appearing again on the Chronomaster and today's flagship 'The Citizen' models. On this 1962 Chronometer it appears both discreetly on the dial and prominently on the caseback.

The watch was priced at ¥25,000–¥28,000 in 1962. (Almost the same range as that of the Grand Seiko 3180). ¥25,000 was roughly equivalent to an entire month's wages for an average Japanese industrial worker at that time.

The Chronometer also helps explain what followed at Citizen. The GS unquestionably came first and deserves its historical status. But mechanically, this Citizen deserves to stand much closer beside it: a clean-sheet 30mm chronometer movement, 31 jewels, huge 13.5mm balance and even a tighter published daily-rate specification.

The GS 3180 has skyrocketed in price recently. Comparatively, the Citizen Chronometer 31J is still attainable. In the age of AI, such disparity won't last for long, I bought two of these beauties for far less than the a current GS 3180 market price.

Most collectors have never heard of Rufus Gerard.

Yet in 2007, this tiny Canadian independent launched a luxury chronograph with a retail price of US$8,800—higher than the steel Rolex Daytona (US$7,900 MSRP) and competing directly with watches from Rolex, IWC and Zenith.

The watch was called the Lacus Temporis (Latin for "Lake of Time"), and only 350 individually numbered pieces were ever produced.

The Movement :

Instead of using a swiss chronograph movement, Rufus Gerard somehow convinced Seiko Instruments to supply its NC77A movement (variant to the flagship 6S77 automatic chronograph). This is the same prestigious movement family used in Credor pacifique chronographs like the GCBK997, assembled at the Shizukuishi Watch Studio, home of Grand Seiko and Credor's mechanical movements.

The Similar to 6s77, the NC77A movement features:

- Column-wheel chronograph

- Automatic winding

- 40 jewels

- Power reserve indicator

- Date display

- ~50-hour power reserve

The story becomes even more interesting when you compare it to TAG Heuer.

TAG licensed Seiko's chronograph design to create the Calibre 1887, but heavily re-engineered it and manufactured it in Switzerland.

Rufus Gerard appears to have taken a completely different approach, receiving a genuine top tier Seiko movement with Rufus Gerard branding rather than redesigning it. To the best of current public knowledge, this makes Rufus Gerard the only other brand to use a top tier Seiko chronograph 6S77-family movement essentially intact.

Even more remarkably, the Lacus Temporis appears to be the only watch Rufus Gerard ever produced before the brand disappeared. Ironically, that's exactly what makes it fascinating today.

You have an early independent watch, limited to just 350 pieces, powered by one of Seiko's finest automatic chronograph movements, from a collaboration that Seiko has never publicly repeated with another independent production brand.

Today everyone talks about watches from independent watchmakers like F.P. Journe, MB&F, H. Moser, Kari Voutilainen, Rexhep Rexhepi.

But back in the mid-2000s, the independent watch scene was still tiny. Launching a brand from scratch and asking customers to spend nearly $9,000 on an unknown name required incredible confidence. Rufus Lin wanted to prove that an independent brand could compete with the biggest names in Swiss through engineering rather than heritage.

According to later interviews, he deliberately chose Seiko's high-end mechanical movement because he wanted something that could compete technically with the best luxury watches coming out of Japan.

Seiko Brightz [SAGV003] - A JDM masterclass with auto-relay, perpetual calendar big date and full titanium case and integrated bracelet

Seiko Brightz SAGV003 is powered by the 7D56 Auto-Relay Kinetic movement. This watch was launched in 2005 and was a JDM only release

Unlike a conventional Kinetic, it can "sleep" when not worn, stop its hands to conserve power, then automatically reset to the correct time the moment it's picked up. That feature still feels futuristic today.

The watch itself is equally impressive: a lightweight titanium case, integrated titanium bracelet, sapphire crystal, razor-sharp Zaratsu-inspired finishing, and the understated design language.

It also features a perpetual calendar programmed until February 28, 2100, automatically accounting for leap years and varying month lengths. The watch also incorporates a beautifully executed big-date display, making it exceptionally practical while maintaining perfect dial balance.

These Two Citizens Look Like Twins... But They're Actually Worlds Apart

At first glance, most people who see these side by side assume they're the same watch. I don't blame them.

They both share the same elegant black dial, polished cushion case, cut glass crystal, razor-sharp faceted indices, dauphine hands, and unmistakable late-1960s Citizen styling. At a glance, they could easily be mistaken for two versions of the same model. But that's where the similarities end.

These two watches represent one of the most fascinating transitions in Japanese horological history.

On the left is the Citizen Chronometer Officially Certified (Ref. 4-720300Y)—one of Citizen's finest automatic mechanical watches. Powered by the high-beat Cal. 7230 running at 36,000 vibrations per hour, it represents the culmination of decades spent perfecting the traditional mechanical wristwatch.

On the right is the Citizen X8 Chronometer (Ref. 4-080041Y)—Japan's first electronic wristwatch. Instead of relying solely on a conventional mechanical escapement, it embraced electronic technology and signaled the direction in which the entire industry was heading.

One was the last great chapter of the mechanical age. The other was the opening chapter of the electronic age.

Yet Citizen chose to dress them almost identically.

I find that absolutely fascinating.

Similar case architecture.

Similar elegant hands.

Similar applied markers.

Similar restrained, understated dial design.

It's as if Citizen wanted customers to recognize them not by their technology, but by their shared position at the very top of the company's lineup.

Then you turn them over...The story becomes even better.

The 4-720300Y proudly wears a beautiful gold medallion bearing Citizen's crown logo—a fitting emblem for one of the company's flagship officially certified mechanical chronometers.

The 4-080041Y, meanwhile, couldn't be more different. Its caseback boldly proclaims "Electronic", almost like a declaration that a new era had arrived.

Those two casebacks perfectly capture a pivotal moment in watchmaking history.

One celebrates centuries of mechanical tradition.

The other embraces the future.

What surprises me is how rarely either watch gets mentioned today.

The 4-720300Y is often overshadowed by Grand Seiko whenever vintage Japanese chronometers are discussed, despite being one of Citizen's highest grade mechanical achievements.

The 4-080041Y lives in the shadow of the quartz revolution that followed only a few years later, even though it represents one of the most important technological milestones in Citizen's history.

To me, these aren't just two vintage Citizens.

They're a snapshot of an industry standing at a crossroads.

One foot firmly planted in the world of springs, gears and escapements.

The other taking its first confident step into electronics.

That's what makes this pair so special.

[Seiko Kinetic] MX2000 (Cal. 9T82) - One of the Greatest Hidden Gems in Modern Horology

Released during the turn of the millennium, the Seiko Kinetic Sportura MX7000 featuring the 9T82 movement was designed as Seiko's flagship Kinetic movement, combining mechanical engineering with quartz precision in a way almost no other manufacturer had attempted.

It isn't really a quartz watch or a mechanical watch - it was something in between. It has an automatic style rotor, gear trains, jewels, fully mechanical flyback chronograph reset, quartz regulation, self generated electricity. This is close in philosophy to spring drive movement except that in the spring drive, the power is stored in a mainspring whereas in the 9T82 it's stored in a battery.

The 9T82 was an engineering showcase from Seiko and represented the absolute pinnacle of the Kinetic program. The watch's dial design was inspired by automotive instrument cluster and shows multiple separate displays similar to that found in sports cars. Jay Leno is known to have owned one of these watches.

The case and integrated bracelet is made from Titanium. Machining titanium was considerably more difficult and costly at that time and was used only in premium watches.

The movement contains numerous features normally associated with high-end mechanical chronographs:

  1. Heart-cam instant reset mechanism

  2. Zero-backlash gearing for precise hand positioning

  3. Multiple independent stepping motors

  4. Jewel bearings throughout the movement (38 jewels)

  5. Hand-assembled construction

Seiko even published a technical paper explaining the engineering challenges involved in creating the 9T82, highlighting the unusually high power demands of a chronograph combined with Kinetic charging.

The 9T82 was hand-assembled, finely adjusted, and built with far more complexity than ordinary quartz chronographs. It is one of Seiko's finest electronic movements ever produced.

Thirty-eight jewels is extraordinary for an electronically regulated movement. Many famous mechanical chronographs have fewer:

Rolex 4130 — 44 jewels

Zenith El Primero — 31 jewels

Valjoux 7750 — 25 jewels

A quartz regulated movement with 38 jewels is almost unheard of.

In terms of accuracy, 9T82 offers quartz accuracy of roughly ±15 seconds per month, translating to around ±180 seconds per year under normal conditions. Even an exceptionally regulated mechanical chronograph cannot consistently approach such accuracy numbers.

A true limited edition & a 21st century commemorative edition.

The MX7000 was released specifically to celebrate the arrival of the 21st century, which explains why Seiko invested so much into its engineering and why production was limited to just 500 pieces.

Scarcity alone does not create collectability—but scarcity combined with historical importance certainly does.

The 9T82 represents:

  1. one of Seiko's most sophisticated quartz movements,

  2. one of the finest Kinetic calibres ever produced,

It was a landmark in chronograph engineering, and a fascinating bridge between mechanical craftsmanship and electronic precision. The later 7L22 kinetic chronograph is a simplified more industrialized 'little brother' to the 9T82.

Because Spring Drive debuted only a few years later, the 9T82 was overshadowed. I picked up this watch for under USD 1250 a steal price, in my opinion .

Final thoughts

The Seiko Kinetic MX7000 isn't simply a rare Seiko.

It represents an era when Seiko pursued engineering excellence without compromise.

Seiko considered the 9T82 so important that it gave it a "9-series" caliber designation, engineered it with a mechanical heart-cam reset, finished it to a level worthy of an exhibition caseback, and then built a 21st-century commemorative edition limited to just 500 pieces.

In a market increasingly searching for originality rather than logos, the 9T82 represents an undiscovered masterpiece of modern Japanese watchmaking as of mid 2026. But it maynot remain that way in the future. Its significance lies in being a watch that dared to be completely different. Arguably makes it one of the greatest watch releases commemorative of the millennium year 2000.

Vulcain Cricket Calendar - A watch that refuses to stay quiet

There are watches that tell the time. There are watches that start conversations. And then there's the Vulcain Cricket Calendar—a watch that literally shouts for your attention.

The Cricket occupies a unique place in horological history. Introduced in 1947, it became the world's first commercially successful mechanical alarm wristwatch, a complication that required remarkable engineering at the time. Its distinctive buzzing alarm was loud enough to be heard through clothing, making it genuinely useful decades before smartphones existed.

By the late 1950s, Vulcain added a date complication, creating the Cricket Calendar. They retained the clean, elegant dial with applied markers, dauphine hands, and the charming small seconds at six o'clock. It remains one of the most balanced alarm-watch designs ever produced.

What makes the Cricket even more fascinating is its reputation as "The President's Watch." Starting with US presidents Harry S. Truman, Vulcain presented Cricket watches to U.S. Presidents, and the tradition continued through Eisenhower, Nixon, Johnson, and several later presidents. Few watch brands can legitimately claim such a direct connection with the White House.

Mechanically, the Cricket is unlike a conventional watch. Instead of a chiming repeater, a tiny hammer rapidly strikes a membrane attached to the case, producing the unmistakable "cricket" buzz. Feeling that vibration on the wrist is something every mechanical watch enthusiast should experience at least once.

Despite its historical importance, the Vulcain Cricket remains one of vintage watch collecting's hidden bargains. Comparable complications from larger Swiss brands often command several times the price, while an original Cricket still offers true manufacture engineering, historical significance, and one of the most practical complications ever developed.

The Cricket occupies a unique place in horological history. Introduced in 1947, it became the world's first commercially successful mechanical alarm wristwatch, a complication that required remarkable engineering at the time. Its distinctive buzzing alarm was loud enough to be heard through clothing, making it genuinely useful decades before smartphones existed.

By the late 1950s, Vulcain added a date complication, creating the Cricket Calendar. They retained the clean, elegant dial with applied markers, dauphine hands, and the charming small seconds at six o'clock. It remains one of the most balanced alarm-watch designs ever produced.

What makes the Cricket even more fascinating is its reputation as "The President's Watch." Starting with Harry S. Truman, Vulcain presented Cricket watches to U.S. Presidents, and the tradition continued through Eisenhower, Nixon, Johnson, and several later presidents. Few watch brands can legitimately claim such a direct connection with the White House.

Mechanically, the Cricket is unlike a conventional watch. Instead of a chiming repeater, a tiny hammer rapidly strikes a membrane attached to the case, producing the unmistakable "cricket" buzz. Feeling that vibration on the wrist is something every mechanical watch enthusiast should experience at least once.

Despite its historical importance, the Vulcain Cricket remains one of vintage watch collecting's hidden bargains. Comparable complications from larger Swiss brands often command several times the price, while an original Cricket still offers true manufacture engineering, historical significance, and one of the most practical complications ever developed.
