DMZ killed my computer.

Kinda sorta.

Head in for an evening of dying to cheaters.

1st game, get to the map, game crashes.

Try again, get to the map, crash.

Check, everything, ram usage is a little high, but nothing weird.

Reboot, just to be sure, make it through, get to map and computer crashes.

Reboot... And it boots to bios... Try again, straight to bios. That's not good.

CPU, check. RAM, check. GPU, check.

M.2... not found...

Y'all are a bad influence.

So after my mini SACD adventure of a couple of months ago, of trying to get an SACD to play properly on my Sony SACD changer, only to find out that even when it worked, I was only able to get stereo out, I stalled for a little while.

Plan was to pick up a 4K player in the future and actually get surround out of the disc.

Well, today's thrift trip landed a well used but functioning Sony BX510, bluray with SACD capabilities. A quick Google to ensure that my Yamaha receiver could decode DSD and $10 later I've got a fully functional SACD surround solution.

Of course, the kicker is that only 1 of my 2 SACDs is multi channel.

This $10 player is going to cost me a fortune.

Holy Grail find, 50/$4! J/K

Picked up Maxwell's entire (non) discography for $4!

Seriously though, these will come in handy replacing thrashed cases from the thrifts and yard sales.

Best way to store funds for maintenance of vacation property

My elderly parents transferred ownership of a couple of rental properties and a vacation property to me and my sibling. Just called one day and said they're in your name now.

Probably could have been done in a more financially prudent manner, but I wasn't consulted and what's done is done.

Everything is paid for, and the rent went into a fund that paid for insurance and taxes on themselves, and the extra paid for utilities, insurance, taxes and minor maintenance on the vacation property.

The rentals are getting on in years and we have no interest in being landlords but a lot of interest in maintaining the other property which has been in the family for 60+ years.

Logical step seems to be, sell the rentals (pay the capital gains) and use the money as a fund to pay the expenses of the other property.

Outside of yoloing it into shorting Bitcoin, what's our best path to maintain and grow it a little. We'd need some of it liquid enough to pay month to month expenses, and the rest accessible enough to get to if a roof needed replacing in the future.

Let's just say $200,000 to be invested and regular annual expenses of <$5000

Introduction and questions

System specs as an intro.

Yamaha RX 681

Mains: Polk Monitor 75t

Surrounds: Polk Monitor 50

Sub: Polk PSW505 (12")

Sources: TV/YouTube over eArc

Sony SCD-CE595 sacd (stereo only)

My receiver doesn't have 5.1 analog inputs, and the Sony won't play SACDs over optical, so, stereo only until I get a 4K Blu-ray player that also plays SACDs.

I'm really enjoying the few YouTube 5.1 audio channels out there and was wondering what most of y'all are using for sources? SACD, DVD-A, streaming?

Y'all ever feel like there's a version of DMZ we didn't get, but there are elements still there?

Like, finding drills in order to do a safe contract, or plastic explosives to do a destroy supplies, etc, or AFAKs and IFAKs and Medical bags to heal, tools and electrical components to makes stuff...

There's a lot of loot that doesn't seem to have a purpose, or it has a purpose that was bundled together later in the game for making vests, etc...

Why don't the new hifi companies offer surround solutions?

WiiM, Fosi, Eversolo etc... All stereo stuff.

Their streaming solutions seem to be ahead of the traditional companies like Onkyo, Yamaha, etc... but none offer surround options. Is it the licensing thing for Dolby/DTS?

I have a Yamaha in the media room, and it's good, plenty of power, surround is great, etc... but the integrated streaming solution leaves much to be desired. Seems duplicative to add a dedicated streamer and none of the aforementioned companies offer surround.

Just curious as to why.

Neighbor's roommate picked up strays, they came to my house.

Neighbor is out of the country. Their house sitter/occasional roommate/full time flake picked up some stray puppies on the side of the road.

Left them unattended on the front porch and left the house.

They latched on to me when I was walking our dog, a 13 year old Chihuahua mix who was having none of their shenanigans. They followed us and decided my back patio was their new home.

Neighbor doesn't want them or the roommate to have them. Roommate disappears for the weekend, and I'm left with 2 puppies I don't want.

Daughter attaches instantly which meant she was broken when we surrender them at the shelter.

So thanks for that. At least my dog got a new bed out of the situation (gave them his old one)

Bounty marker.

Has this been a thing that I've just never noticed? I usually play solo, so I'm not usually on a squad with a bounty. But I also watch streamers and I've never noticed it before. Rewatching an On1c manhunt just to be sure and a teammate has a bounty but I don't see this marker.

Got hunted by a team, they were a little sus, but nothing I would definitely say they were cheating. One had a bounty when they killed me.

They pick me up and this guy has this symbol over him both on the map and looking at his player. Never really seen it before.

A glitch because the bounty picked me up?

Vintage Flo-master felt tip.

Another estate pick up. No real need but well worth the $0.50.

It's so tiny.

Nothing special, just a generic pen off of AliExpress. But it fits perfectly and it works and it was $1.79.

Telarc classical + jazz lunch haul

My first ever 'audiophile' CD was Telarc's Chiller about 35 years ago. I've had a soft spot for the label ever since. I have a decent collection and added these today.

And some jazz too

Render distance of players?

I was wondering what the render distance cap is for each platform.

I'm on a long range sniper kick at the moment. I can consistently hit 650m shots and a couple of 750m. But I think for my set-up, players don't render past about 800 meters, and I'd love to get a 1000 meter snipe.

I know I've played with a couple of people on console who were spectating me and couldn't see people I was aiming at over about 500m. And I know I've shot at people who were looking for me but apparently couldn't see me.

Very basic set-up on my end, 12gb 4070, 1440p, distant level of detail set to 'high'. I can see helicopters at over 1000, but the characters don't render.

Tips or tricks?

Mission Impossible - Final Reckoning - Too much of a good thing

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Dead Reckoning. Live action set pieces, fairly snappy script, well acted, etc...

So when I sat down to finally watch Final Reckoning, I knew the reviews weren't as good, but I had high hopes.

The whole of the movie can be summed up by a submarine set piece that happens around the halfway mark of the movie. We've seen plenty of underwater stuff before, but I've never seen anything that really gave a sense of scale like this scene. It felt huge, it felt real, it felt like the stakes mattered. The score impacted a sense of dread and it felt dangerous.

Then they ramped it up. Now, for some reason, the sub starts to roll... so we're swimming AND we're climbing... and now let's drop some torpedoes on him, and then the door is blocked... but he can't fit in the tube so...

And that's the whole movie. Let's take a whole movies worth of stuff and cram it into the inciting event. A whole prestige TV series could be made out of a President faced with killing millions to save billions, but here it's the C plot of the climax. Not one, but two 'I can disarm the nuclear weapon but may have to sacrifice myself to do so' bits.

That's not to say there's not good stuff in there. The action and production quality are the best there are. Compare the tunnel chase scene to the one from Fast and Furious 4. FF4 is the big action set piece climax of the movie, and it feels cramped and claustrophobic and cgi'd, while Dead Reckoning's looks and feels amazing and it's just a transition scene. Sound design is great and the cgi disappears.

Where it falls short is the need to constantly ramp everything up. Instead of letting serious events have weight, it just hits another level. Plane exploded? Okay, now your parachute is on fire. A general and a Secret Service agent have a shoot out in the War Room? No worries, we've got a nuclear holocaust to think about...

At the end of the day, C+. Too much of a good thing.

Nope, not crashes or OSS, or dupers, or hackers (maybe a little).

No, my current minigame is long distance sniping. A Victus, a Raptor scope and some high velocity. My longest is currently 500m, but the problem is finishing. I've gotten headshots at 750, but all it does is break, and as soon as I break someone, they're ducking for cover and plating up. No way to do a quick follow up at 750. And even if I get a down, they usually fall out of sight.

One day, though, that solo with a 1 plate and no self is going to be on the buy at Sawah and wonder how he got downed from Satiiq.

Things have definitely been better, but I still have occasional issues in Koschei.

Just finished a raid, killed the sniper and rhino, hit the exit, see the raid summary screen, get xp, missions completed, and instead of back to the lobby I get the dreaded 'downloading instance inventory ' notification.

Sure enough, I've got my full backpack again. So, complete missions, get xp, AND keep my inventory?

Not gonna complain about that one.
