Inside Fort Douamont near Verdun
The fort was built to hold about 800 soldiers but after its capture by the Germans in february 1916, around 2000 German soldiers were stationed here.
Many developed the ‘Douaumont disease’ (EDIT this seems to be a nickname for the symptoms and not an actual disease) due to the dampness of the fort combined with saltpeter smoke and general lack of hygiene (there were only a few toilets and no showers).
Disaster struck when in may 1916 the French used 900kg shells to attack the fortress which might have been the cause a of the large munitions explosion (EDIT the exact cause of the explosion has never been cleared up, see comment) inside the fort that killed nearly 800 soldiers.
When I visited the fort there were almost no other visitors. There was water dripping from the ceiling and the general atmosphere was quite grim. Definitely worth a visit!
