SUCCESS: Modifying (modest-ifying?) old formal gown! No sewing

Hi! I just wanted to share a success story of how I modified an old gown I have from several years ago, which was bought before I started dressing modestly. It's a gorgeous gorgeous gown, which I often wear with a big crinoline and petticoat for maximum ballgown effect.

First, I tried wearing a black high neck sleeveless shirt and long sleeve black lace shirt underneath with an infinity veil atop the dress, paired with one of my black veils underneath the infinity veil. Aesthetically and coverage wise, that turned out great, but the beading on the dress kept catching on the lace and absolutely tearing it up, which was a very unpleasant persistent sensation and of course not good for the shirt.

I am going to an event soon and really didn't want to buy a different dress when I have a perfectly lovely one, so I thought of a solution to test out, and it worked!

I first layered a high neck black cami under the dress (bought on sale $7.99). This on its own doesn't look right, as expected. I then layered on top a black capelet I bought, hoping it would make the look more natural. Success! Looks gorgeous with just a black veil or a black veil with an infinity veil on top. Does not look out of place at all. The capelet is sheer, but not you can see through it from far away sheer, and the cami covers what I'm most concerned about showing through. I chose a capelet that was long in the back to cover the back laces and such as well. The capelet was mildly creased out of the package, but I'd expect that from the fabric. My biggest complaint is that it was inside of a bag inside of the Amazon package, and the bag inside of the Amazon package was COVERED in mysterious grease. The capelet itself was clean though. I bought nude long sleeves/arm covers which are arriving today that I'm going to test as well.

Attached are commercial pictures of the original dress. It's my nicest, fanciest dress, not a usual purchase but just purchase for a once in a lifetime event. I'd never owned anything as fancy before or since, I'd guess the next time I get a dress like that it'll be my wedding dress. Also, lesson learned not to buy dresses covered in glitter, it still gets everywhere years later and after washing. It's from the Cinderella Divine collection from Andrea & Leo couture. I have no clue if the site I found these photos from is reputable, they weren't available on the original sites they would have been on at the time of purchasing.

I've seen several posts asking about modifying formal dresses. Hope this helps someone!

Anyone else do a complete 180 from how they used to dress? What's your story?

I used to not value modesty at all with what I wore, for years and years. Now I'm very covered and can't imagine that not being the case. I bought new clothes but also try to modify what I already have to be wearable modestly as much as possible.

Did anyone else choose to dress modestly after dressing more revealingly, rather than having been raised dressing modestly your whole life? If so, why? What's your story and why do you value it now?

UPDATE: Found a high neck slip!!

I'm so happy, as a larger chested gal it's really hard to find a slip that covers all of my cleavage, much less one that isn't super v-necked, has spaghetti straps for versatility under dresses, and that has lace at the top. I made a post previously asking if anyone had any suggestions, but have since found one!! I updated that post, but since I've searched this subreddit for something similar so many times, I decided to post separately. Personally, slips specifically make me feel elegant and happy, so I prefer them to something like a modesty panel.

I have zero financial stake in this, I do not know anyone from the company etc. Full disclosure, I have yet to throw it in the wash and just got it, so I can't advocate for how well it holds up from experience, but it seems well made. Super soft and nice, I had to size down so I'd say runs large: slip link

I paid $14.99.

Also found this camisole

Oddly a little cropped (on me) but covers everything, super soft and comfy, and it being a little short (like it hits right below my belly button) isn't much of an issue since I'll likely be using it as an under layer.

I paid $7.99 on sale.

I hope this helps someone

What keywords do you use when searching for modest clothing?

Here's a list of things I try:
"Modest [item]"
"Mock neck [item]"
"High neck [item]"
"Swim dress" (rather than swimsuit)
"Maxi [dress/skirt]"
I don't belong to any of the following associated religions, but I find the search terms helpful -- they don't always produce results solely exclusive to the religion of which I'm aware, usually just more coverage. I mean no offense by including them :)
"Tznius [item]" after trying to find modest dresses with 10,000 different search terms on Amazon, "Tznius dress" gave me cute, modest results.
"Muslim [item]"
"Burkini"

Any you'd add to the list?

Slip that covers cleavage?

I'm looking for a slip that completely covers cleavage (not with see through lace, actually covered) while still having the traditional spaghetti straps as to work with any dress. Ideally a little decorative lace trim too. I can't seem to find any, as they are either v-necks or don't go up far enough in the picture. I'm aware of other sorts of undershirts but am looking for slips specifically. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated, thank you for reading and I hope the rest of your day goes well : )

How to find a good lab coat?

Undergrad here.

I've been doing chem labs with the plastic, uncomfortable, wrinkled, stained lab coats they had us buy first term. TBH they might be the disposable kind except they've had us rewear them, not quite sure.

Anyways, I think I only have one term of chem lab (class) left (ochem, I don't think biochem or microbio had labs but I could be misremembering). I haven't had to wear a lab coat in biology, so unless I join a lab requiring one I'd assume that's all I'd use it for in the near future, but I'd really like to upgrade to a nice fabric lab coat. I know maybe some jobs in the future might supply them if need be, but I assume it wouldn't hurt to have one of my own? Either way, I don't want to do several more months of lab in what I have currently.

My school has your very basic lab coats for I think ~$30, but I honestly saw a video of someone with the Genius Lab Gear Curie lab coat (this is not an ad) and was entranced -- I mean, adjustable belt, ring holder, micropipette holster?!?! I'm intrigued. It's listed as $64.95 on the site and $67.95 on Amazon.

Is this a good lab coat/is there something I should be looking for when looking at lab coats? Does getting black vs white matter (ie would it be an issue if I can't see spills on the black one)? Is there any argument against getting a lab coat as an undergrad? Are there better or similar lab coats that y'all would recommend?

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any insight you may have.

edit:

-It is a lab course, not a lab I'm working in. We're required to buy our own lab coats. They sell basic unisex ones for like $30 I think, I was wondering if something like this was worth the upgrade.
-I am aware PPE is not fashion, that's not what I'm asking for. I am just looking for a lab coat that fits well and isn't what I have currently, which is very garbage-bag adjacent and sweaty and uncomfortable. This is what the school initially had us buy, although some folks bring in their own cloth lab coats. I want something that's comfortable and fits well.
-Yes, we take our lab coats home, that's what's expected or at least what was expected in gen chem labs at my school (I have yet to start the ochem lab, which is what I'm looking into this for). That's not within my control. . There's no place to store them, we aren't using extremely dangerous chemicals, I treat my lab coat as if contaminated and isolate it from all my other stuff

Have you ever had someone comment that it's like you're "on dr*gs" if you're being yourself?

I tend to be more reserved around folks I don't know, but if I get comfortable with people I may be more expressive. I've gotten that sort of comment a few times in my life when I'm being happy and expressive and more relaxed for once around someone and it just instantly makes me shut down pretty much entirely and hurts deeply. It's not always meant as an insult more I guess a social observation/comment on unusual/unusually happy behavior (I had someone close to me say this one time I believe and that HURT despite that not being the intention) but I still really really dislike it. It makes me hesitant to relax around people. Has anyone else experienced something like this and if so, how do you deal with it?

Reprint request fee

I got a notebook that had some defects, requested a reprint. They didn't tell me that requesting a reprint would cost money, or how much it would cost. I went to check up on it to find I was about to be charged almost $15 without warning... Thankfully I cancelled the order before it was printed (although at first it didn't let me), but I just assumed that a reprint request was a customer service help type button. I would assume if you requested a new copy due to their own mistake and you weren't told there would be a charge involved, there wouldn't be a charge, but alas. I think that needs to be communicated more clearly.

Please don't hit on your insurance agent

Literally just that. Some people do and it's weird and inappropriate.

edit: y'all it's people way older than me harassing me not people my own age

Has anyone else had bad experiences with the CAPS emergency walk in sessions or whatever it is they're called? I had a bit of a mental health crisis last year and tried to walk in but had a long wait time and was VERY much dismissed despite showing very clear red flags and emphasizing how much I needed help. I'm wondering if anyone else has had that experience, it would be nice to have a convenient place on campus to get support, especially now that the student health fee doesn't cover Samaritan, but after that I never want to go back. If someone else has had a really good experience I might consider it if I'm really struggling again

edit: for any folks struggling, I haven't gone so I can't speak from experience, but what seems promising close by is the benton county crisis center. I'm planning on trying to go there if I ever need help again Mental Health Crisis Services - Benton County Health Department, Oregon
