Bird in center or cropped left? Trying to learn composition

Recently watched some videos explaining how we should have the animal cropped to the side, with open room left over into the direction they are going into / looking at in order to add a better composition.
I am kinda limited here because the size of the photo needs to fit into the SCRL app for a carousel I am making. That being said, do you like the bird in center, or bird on the left, flying into the open space on the right?

Is background too messy and distracting? Trying to practice rule of thirds, right middle. Also trying to learn using gradients in Lightroom to mimic a sunrise beam.

Using r6 and 200-800, deleted the tripod post. Still a hands on monopod. But, do the little feet and ball swivel feature offer improved stability and less sway compared to a regular monopod with feet? Wildlife and birds

Which crop do you prefer?

Saw my first deer today. They don’t exist where I live so was pleased with this trip. Do you like the zoomed in version with his face centered or the full body. Doing my best to make my wildlife photo fit in the SCRL app as I’d like to post a carousel of my collection when summer ends

Thoughts on pairing my r7 with a 28mm f1.2 for landscape / portraits photos as a side arm?

I’m going on a wildlife trip with my r7 paired with my 100-400 for whales, birds, sea lions, foxes etc.

I do however want to be able to photograph things like closer portraits of some people, and some scenic landscape shots, sunset beach type photos.

I understand they say the r7 isn’t lovely for low light situations, but, with the f1.2 of the 28mm, maybe that will buy me some light power?

The 28 mm on the r7 turns into about 45mm given the apsc crop. I really have never shot landscapes and mountains before, I know there is some subjective nature to this question, but how do you figure a 28mm (now about 45) on the r7 would do for those shots?

Am I better off just keeping the 28mm on a full frame backup body (EOS RP sitting in my closet) - I’d like to avoid bringing two cameras, but, open to any information some of you can give me.

Channel Islands / Ventura - what camera lens to bring.

Hi all. Going to be spending a few days in Channel Islands / and Ventura too.

I’d love to photograph some island foxes, whales, sea lions. Would any photographers please chime in. I am debating bringing a 70-200 vs a 100-400.

Of note, I shoot an r7 which gives me a little more reach.

I am from south Florida where these animals don’t exists, and want to know how close (safely) I can photograph these types of animals and what reach I’d need.

Side note. I have a 28mm I can switch to if I want to take a scenic or portrait shot.

Help me, figure out to get an aesthetic gradient lighting. Here is original, I can’t figure out how to make the photo less boring.

I am trying to add some sort of linear gradient lighting to give it a sunset type vibe, but having a hard time in Lightroom using the masking tool to add a linear type light effect

Whale watching recommendations Depoe Bay: EcoExcursions Carrie Newell (and dog lol).

Going to Oregon early September. Would like to book a whale watching boat tour. I hear that the smaller more personal boats are superior to the large cruise type charters. I’ve read on multiple sites folks recommend Carrie Newell which I suppose and her dog? For whale watching in depoe. My goal is to get close ish and witness wildlife I won’t see in south Florida

Thoughts? Any other recommendations?

Trying to get better at composition. Does the plant in the lower right corner add value or is it annoying and distracting ?

1 or 2

Do you like 1 with the warmer gradient sky, or 2 with the natural dark sky of the forest? I like the sunshine affect however feel the second one offers good contrast, leading your eye to the cow and focus on the subject. Thoughts

R5mkii owners: what camera did you upgrade from? What are your favorite pros? Any cons you’ve noticed?

Hi all. Again asking about the r5 mk2.

I am currently shooting an R6mkii with a 200-800 for wildlife. While I do get ok pictures, I truthfully feel I’d benefit from a faster AF with a sticker eye tracker. Additionally, I am convinced at this point going from 24 to 45 mp will allow me to crop in tighter for things such as detailed bird portraits.

Besides price, there is nothing else really stopping me from wanting to make this jump.

Does the ability to crop heavily from a higher-resolution full-frame sensor effectively give you the same reach as an APS-C camera? Wildlife shooters: R5 Mark II vs R7 (or future R7 Mark II) for reach?

I’m currently shooting an R6 Mark II and trying to decide whether to upgrade to an R5 Mark II or wait for a potential R7 Mark II.

For example:
R5 Mark II (45 MP) + RF 200-800mm
R7 (32.5 MP APS-C) + RF 100-500mm (giving an equivalent field of view similar to 160-800mm on full frame)

If both images are cropped to show the same subject size, would the R5 II retain more detail, less detail, or roughly the same detail as the R7?
For wildlife and birds, would you personally choose:
An R5 Mark II with the ability to crop aggressively in post, or
An R7-style APS-C body that puts more pixels on the subject natively?
I’m trying to understand whether the extra megapixels of the R5 II can effectively replace the “reach advantage” of an APS-C body, or if the APS-C sensor still has a meaningful advantage for distant wildlife.

Which lens and body for this trip?

Hi everyone. Planning to go to Oregon. Anyone with experience, please let me know.

Anyways, goal is to shoot photos of mount hood, typical beach landscapes like cannon beach, and whatever wildlife comes my way. When I say wildlife, I am doing a whale tour. The whales seems closer than I’d expect. Suppose Oregon has some elk along the way too.

Body choices: RP vs the R7.
R7 has better reach, so I’m assuming for wildlife this would be my better pick from my arsenal. But, I don’t know how it would do with low light scenes such as sunset / sunrise over the mountains.

Lens choices: 70-200mm f2.8 and I have a 100-400 mm as well. I’m confident the 70-200 would take beautiful shots of the landscapes and mountains, but not sure if it is enough reach for whales or elk or whatever seals and birds show up along the way.

Of note, I have a 28mm I can use for close up shots, or wide portraits.

I really can only bring one body and one of the larger lenses. The 28 will fit in a side zipper. Pick one lens and telephoto lens for me to shoot in Oregon.

Questions for depoe bay whale watching - early September

Thanks for putting up with all ,y questions.

Looking online, the whale watching tours seems fairly affordable to the point where if I didn’t see a whale, heck, for 30-50 bucks a boat ride would be cool enough as is.

However, can anyone share experiences from early September? Websites offer different information on whale migrations during that time.

Would a 70-200mm lens suffice for reach? I’d like to get some solid photos of these creatures.

Do you have a favorite company that runs these charters?
