I'm Back (again) With Another Dead CPU

PLEASE READ THE FULL POST AND PREVIOUS ONES FOR IMPORTANT INFO.

As the title mentions, my 9800x3d died in my x870 Steel Legend Wifi MB.

I was on BIOS 4.20 since April, and I stuck to the rules of the "experiment," so I feel confident in saying that the issue is not resolved despite ASRock's/AMD's claims.

One very interesting thing to note is that both times my CPU died were when I was playing IL2 Sturmovik. I find this particularly interesting because I had only just started playing the game after not having played it since maybe late November/early December. Today was my second day back on the game. It could absolutely be a coincidence, but I also wonder if the game somehow pushes the CPU in a certain way that it doesn't like. No way to know for sure, but interesting nonetheless.

Another thing to note is that for the past 2-3 months I've been having issues with booting up my PC. I would power it on, and the CPU light would be on, and the DRAM light would flash as normal, but then it would cut right to the BOOT light and get stuck. I would have to cut power and try again for it to hopefully go from the CPU and DRAM light to only the VGA light and then the VGA light combined with the BOOT light. It sounded similar to what other users on here have reported, and I was worried one day my PC simply wouldn't boot, but it did eventually every time, and so I'm not sure what caused that issue.

Now, looking to the future, I'm done with ASRock. I'm going to RMA the CPU, and I'm going to go with another X870 board.

Comparing Intel Vs AMD Q2 Datacenter Performance

AMD just dropped Q2 earnings so I thought I'd post a comparison to Intels figures. Specifically looking at the Q1 > Q2 transition for datacenter:

AMD — Data Center segment

Q1'26 revenue: $5.78B

Q2'26 revenue: $6.72B

+16% QoQ Segment

op income: $1.60B → $2.10B (31% margin)

Intel — DCAI segment

Q1'26 revenue: $5.05B

Q2'26 revenue: $6.26B

+24% QoQ Segment

op income: $1.54B → $2.47B (40% margin)

That's right intel outperformed AMD in datacenter in quarter in both revenue growth, margin, and income. AMD posted larger DC revenue overall but they have a GPU line blended in those numbers.

Rough estimates show Intel recaptured about 3% of the x86 DC market this quarter.

Intels fabs are paying off here as they can scale without having to compete for wafer space and if my Q3 estimates are correct this should only tilt further into Intels favour.

Anyone That Bought Cheap High Speed DDR5 for Intel Alder Lake, Raptor Lake or Arrow Lake Are Next-Gen Ready. What about AM4 or AM5? Probably Not!

Anyone that bought DDR5 and Intel Alder Lake, Raptor Lake or Arrow Lake is way ahead. Their DDR5 was most likely stupid cheap and with Intel, they likely went high speed DDR5. Those consumers can use that on Nova Lake and future gens on LGA 1954. Even better for Arrow Lake owners that went CUDIMMs that should be able to be pushed even harder with next gen LGA 1954 and Nova Lake.

Those that stuck to old DDR4 are now stuck on DDR4 unless they want to now pay 4-5x what DDR5 was going for when it tanked super cheap.

Additionally if you bought AMD, you're stuck on slow DDR5 6000 most likely. With rumors of next gen AM5 CPUs supporting higher speed DDR5 and CUDIMMs, owners will want to or need to upgrade to newer DDR5 to enjoy maximum performance. Meanwhile Intel owners can reuse their high speed DDR5 they bought during Alder Lake, Raptor Lake or Arrow Lake. This will cause future AM5 builds to be much more expensive for upgraders.

Sometimes it just pays to invest into your platform rather than sitting on the sidelines. Intel platforms were accused of "needing" high speed DDR5 to enjoy maximum benefit. It seems that early purchase of high speed DDR5 in earlier and cheaper days greatly paid off for those owners as they'll enjoy superior longevity of that investment!

The dreaded burn mark finally hit me

I have a Ryzen 9 7900x and a MSI B650M Mortar wifi on my build since December 2024 and as you can see there are burn marks on the cpu pads and motherboard pin.

These values has been consistent ever since I have built it.

My Ryzen 9 9900X just suddenly died (Code 00 / Red CPU LED). Pulled it out and found a physical "bump" / blister on the bottom pads. Anyone seen this before?

Looking for some technical insight into a pretty wild and devastating hardware failure I just dealt with. My system suddenly refused to boot out of nowhere, and after finally tearing it down to find out why, what I found on the CPU is honestly bizarre.

Specs

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9900X
  • Motherboard: MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk WiFi (Both the CPU and board are less than a year old)
  • PSU: Corsair RM1000X
  • Cooler: 240 mm DeepCool AIO

Just to rule it out early: the power supply is completely fine. It’s an older unit, but it’s a workhorse. I already pulled it out and tested it in a completely different system where it’s currently driving a GPU without a single hiccup.

Settings

I wasn’t running any manual overclocks, voltage tuning, or anything like that. Everything was completely stock, with the sole exception of having Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) turned on in the BIOS.

Sequence of Events

One day the PC just completely refuses to POST with only fans spinning and nothing else. The motherboard was throwing a hard POST code 00 and the red CPU debug LED was lit up solid.

I went through the usual troubleshooting steps and did a CMOS reset as well as a BIOS Flashback with USB. Nothing helped. Finally, I pulled the cooler and the CPU. The cooler was mounted perfectly, the thermal paste spread looked great, and the top metal part (IHS) looks totally flawless with zero signs of heat or damage.

The CPU blister: Right in the dead center of the underside, there is a distinct, localized physical bump or bubble swelling outward. It looks like a literal blister where the layers of the substrate have failed and bubbled out. Can feel that "bump" if you run your finger over it.

I looked closely at the motherboard socket too. The pins look straight, but the specific area of the socket that aligns directly with that CPU bump looks a little different and slightly compressed in person from the extra physical pressure, though it's super tough to capture clearly on camera.

Would love to hear your thoughts if you've run into anything similar on Zen5 and 800-series platform.
