I had a dream in which every reality check failed.

In my dream I did something that would mess up my life forever (in the dream) and to make sure it was all real I did reality checks. I counted my fingers but they were perfect. I poked my finger on my hand, nothing. I even tried plugging my nose but that didn't work. I tried pulling out a weapon from my pocket by imagining it but alas, nothing. I was fully conscious and aware too. I genuinely believed that I killed somebody. How do I make sure I'm in a dream?
