"insert single basket" error, when using the single basket.

This morning I went to make a cup with the single basket like I normally do, and I am getting the "insert single basket" message. I tried putting an additional magnet on the basket, placing one in the correct location, etc. and it still logs the error and won't proceed with brewing.

Anyone else had this issue? Made 3 cups yesterday with no problem - I don't even remove the single basket - I just pull the filter out.

Pizza yesterday, focaccia today

Did 12 pies yesterday using the King Arthur pizza flour for the first time. It was a noticeable improvement over the KA bread flour with crisper crust and less char, despite the oven being a bit hotter at 785 floor temp.

I had three balls left after everyone was done so I scraped them into a pan and left it to ferment overnight in the fridge. Popped it in the oven (Forno Bravo) this morning (was still 485 inside) and baked for 20 minutes.

Given it was the first time I've made focaccia I think it came out pretty well!

NIST.gov blog post about Greg Scace

Found this in my google feed this morning, about the history of how Greg Scace was inspired to develop the Scace device:

https://www.nist.gov/blogs/taking-measure/enjoy-espresso-you-can-thank-precise-temperature-measurements

This is one that is close to home for me - back in the early 2000's I was an active participant on Alt.coffee - I remember so much of that time fondly, back at the dawn of the Third Wave. I had an PID controlled Silvia in 2003 (which I only sold in 2024) and went to the SCAA convention in 2004 as a Consumer Member, along with Mark Prince (CoffeeGeek), Greg Scace, Andy Schecter, Marshall Fuss, Fortune Bucholtz, Barry & June Jarrett, Ken Fox, Ed Needham, Randy Glass, Doug Cadmus, Jim Schulman, and I'm sure others I'm forgetting.

It was incredible, and I'm glad I got to be a part of it!

Making cold brew - why wasn't I prompted to switch the brew head?

So I was making a 50oz cold brew today and was prompted to use 107g of coffee, but didn't remember to switch the brew head from single cup to brew basket, and I wasn't prompted to. So now I have a bunch of grounds that are still dry and weren't extracted at all.

I know that I was prompted in the past to change the shower head - why isn't this still happening?

Dads - these things kind of suck

The built-in governors limit any ability to build momentum and require SO MUCH work to move. Like I'm not asking to be be able to stick the kids to the side like a Gravitron, but just a little bit more ability to free spin would be nice.

Pseudo Juice is SO much better than fresh lime juice

I never would have believed it, but pseudo juice I made more than a month ago just handily beat using fresh lime juice in a Mai tai, and it wasn't even close.

Do yourself a favor - get the malic acid and the citric acid and just make some. It lasts forever in the fridge and it is so much better than using fresh.

For a comparison the difference was that the fresh lime juice was more bitter and required more sweetness to be balanced, and even then it was only "ok". I then made a psuedo juice mai tai and it was incredible, even though this juice was made at least a month ago.

Trader Joe's Kilimanjaro instant - not bad for $5!

So on a whim I picked this up last night and was pleasantly surprised by it - no weird "freeze dried" flavor, and pleasant acidity. It's not going to blow you away, but it absolutely is decent enough that I will probably take it on vacation to avoid taking my whole pour over set up. I'm guessing that this must be using the same newer process for instant coffee that some of the better roasters are these days. It's product of Switzerland if that narrows it down at all.

3+ years of daily use on my K6 with zero disassembly or cleaning

Yesterday I read a comment where someone stated they take their K6 apart every time they use it, which to me is utterly nuts. My K6 has been used every day, usually multiple times, for 3+ years. I have never taken it apart. It's probably been 100+ lbs of coffee that I've put through it.
