Unable to opt into company pension scheme

Recently started a new job and I asked to enroll with the pension scheme. I was told that I have to wait 12 months, at which point I will be added to the scheme and 12 months EE contributions will be added.

Is this allowed? I understood by law you are added to the scheme after 6 months but you can opt in before this. TIA

Why is my parents goldfish so fat?

Apologies for poor photo quality. It’s been rotund for as long as I remember (2+ years) but it has gotten a bit larger recently. Anything they should be worried about?

If you had a bad MW1, what’s your plan for MW2?

Is it too soon/ kneejerk to WC? Almost half of my players didn’t start and barely any got returns. Unsure what to do

Permanently banned after sale

My account has been permanently suspended by EBay after selling & shipping a high price (over £1K) item. Parcel was delivered yesterday.

Where do I stand and how can I get my money out? Any advice appreciated.

Recently moved to the island and sold a couple of items. The buyers used relay which doesn’t seem to be available on IoM.

Getting a job in your 50’s

My mum (50’s) has recently been made redundant and has been applying for some jobs but hasn’t heard back from any. She’s worked in an office doing administrative work for her entire working life.

I have recently moved home and it’s stressful seeing her applying for jobs that it seems she has no hope of hearing back on. How difficult is it to get a job in your 50’s?

Fun movie recommendations?

Please can you recommend me a fun film that will help me forget about the unbearable weight of my existence for a couple of hours? Something similar to Bullet Train or Fantastic Mr Fox would be ideal. Thanks!

How common is upselling?

I recently dined at Row on 5 (**) and it was the first time I've been upsold at a restaurant with stars. It happened twice within the first 25 minutes and then about 3 separate times throughout the rest of the meal.

Is it normal? It stuck out to me and made the experience feel somewhat corporate and clinical. Fortunately the food and service was excellent and indeed one of the additional courses I went for was phenomenal, but I wonder why the cost and dish are not just incorporated into the menu anyway?

Apologies if this Q is not allowed!

Humble Chicken (**), Soho, London

My first ‘Omakase’ experience, albeit not traditional, inspired by chef Angelo Sato’s Japanese and European heritage.

The small touches and details such as a fresh citrus sprayed flannel before starting the meal made the difference. All the dishes were meticulously constructed and I loved the textures, flavours and temperatures. Really exciting and special, the whole team there are very friendly and welcoming.

Menu below, I also had their wine & sake pairing which was lovely. I would highly recommend visiting (I essentially also got a double portion of the bread & pigeon courses which was a boon!)

Wild mussel
Fish & chip
Sweetbread
Foie gras
Langoustine 1
Langoustine 2
Cod chawanmushi
Milk bread picnic
Seabream dashi
Humble (Anjou) pigeon
Strawberry cheesecake
Coffee
Mint chocolate ice cream
Black sesame fudge
Red miso madeleine
Chocolate soufflé

The tastiest champagne I’ve ever tried

Just a casual drinker but I had a glass of Krug Brut 2000 and I was blown away. It had a beautiful deep colour, I got a lot of brioche and toasty notes on the nose and it carried a more rich/ savoury taste than I am used to with champagne. I’m worried that after trying this everything else will feel like a disappointment!

Always a tremendous feed at Quality Chop House!

One of my favourite London restaurants, best steak I’ve had at London. Love the old school feel inside, friendly waiters and food is always top notch.

Courses last night:
• Kentish Asparagus, Stracciatella, Wild Garlic & Macadamia + Chicken liver & foie gras parfait, Sauternes jelly & Parker house roll
• Aberdeen Angus Bone in ribeye, Confit potatoes, Piattone beans & Oakleaf salad
• 70% chocolate delice tart, coffee cream & sesame ice cream + Capezzana olive oil ice cream

Male hermann’s tortoise circa 20 yrs. If I’m outside he will often charge and butt me relentlessly. Always seems to be angry. Sometimes flips himself onto his back. He’s becoming hard work when I am trying to garden. Any suggestions / advice for how to best deal with this?
