I knew I should leave, but I stayed and now I doubt myself

I recently dated someone, and from the beginning, I was very clear about my needs and what I expected from a relationship. At first, they pretended to understand and meet some of those needs, but eventually, they showed me who they really were.

I knew I should leave the moment I noticed the change. But somehow, they manipulated me into staying, and things only got worse.

They would talk to me when they wanted to and meet me when it was convenient for them. Whenever I tried to communicate about how I felt or asked why they were treating me that way, they eventually told me, “I don't feel anything for you. I think it's better if we just stay friends. I don't want us to become strangers.”

But how am I supposed to do that?

What hurts the most is that, in the beginning, they were the one who wanted me to be in a relationship with them, even though I knew relationships could disrupt the life I had planned for myself. I trusted them and eventually became emotionally attached. Then, once I was attached, everything changed.

Now I'm left questioning myself wondering if I was too needy, if I expected too much, or if I somehow did something wrong.

I know I should have left when I first saw the signs. But I didn't, and now I'm struggling with the consequences.

>!**How do you stop doubting yourself after something like this? And how do you accept that you can't just be “friends” with someone you genuinely loved and were emotionally attached to?**!<
