How accurate is the Net Price Calculator for families with unusual financial situations?

Our family does not fit any of the asterisked "assuming standard asset profile" statements that colleges make concerning their commitment to meet all demonstrated financial need. We have a 'low' income (~$65,000) and high assets (~$2,000,000). (There are some dependent family members and their assets mixed in there that give us less freedom than you might assume based on those assets, but those details aren't official enough to come into any official calculation.)

To what degree can we trust the NPC from various colleges? It is fine if the final number varies by 20% or so, but not if we suddenly jump from an estimated 0 cost based on automated estimates made before applying to an actual full cost based on a closer look at our unusual asset profile. This is even more concerning as we consider apply ED.

Book line about doing science while tired (and stupid)

I have a new full-time job as a college physics professor, and I'm currently geeking out decorating my new office. I think it needs some PHM quotes.

It has been a few years since I read the book, but I know there is a recurring theme about Rocky sending Grace to bed because Grace is making mistakes because he is tired. It is something like "no do science when stupid."

What's the exact line? And I think there is another one about asking questions. Any other appropriate quotes to consider? I want to cross stitch some to go on my wall.

What happened with Mason and Mr. Phillips?

The end showed meaningful closeup shots of Sam's brother (Mason?) and of the leader (Mr Phillips), but I didn't follow what happened there. The brother character seemed to be thrown in and then simply dropped from the plot. What happened with him?

What am I doing wrong? Edge trimmer line breaking.

Southeast US.

Why is trimmer line breaking All. The. Time?

Today I spent 2 hours trimming my average suburban lawn and used 2.5 trimmer spools (6 yards on each, so 15 yards = 45 feet) of 0.08=2mm line. In all that time, I used less than a tank of fuel. I turned off the beast to rethread the spool at least a dozen times. Clearly I'm doing something wrong. I don't expect to be able to just walk down the sidewalk and leave a perfectly trimmed edge behind me like the pros do, but this is ridiculous.

I have included lots of pictures of my process of winding the spool; yes, I am mindful of the arrow that tells which direction to wrong. The last image shows one occurrence of the line binding and sort of melting together; I had to use a screw driver to pry the strands apart.

I know that it would be somewhat easier and less likely to break if I didn't let the overgrowth around the edges get so high, but it is such a frustrating process that I put it off until the edges in the back are a foot high.

I often wonder which direction to walk along the edge. When doing the sidewalk, I usually hold the motor up by my right ear and sidestep walk right/half-backwards. I think that makes the line approach the sidewalk with its natural curve facing up. (I have utterly failed in describing those directions. Sorry.) However, even if this is wrong, it isn't the whole problem, because I am breaking like every few minutes when using the trimmer flat to the ground as well.

Please help me learn to do this better!

James Bond to prepare for Austin Powers

The next step in my teens' cultural education is Austin Powers, but they will miss most of the allusions without prior knowledge of the original James Bond tropes.

What one Bond movie would be most interesting and would properly prepare modern teens for the astoundingly wonderful cringe that is Austin Powers?

How to build an ADA-compliant STEM course from scratch, including posting PowerPoint slide decks

I am completely revamping my most commonly-taught course this year (Intro Physics). In the past, I have relied heavily on PPT slides which I print to PDF and post on Canvas ahead of time and encourage students to download and add their own notes to. I feel that I have dialed in the balance of content to include on slides so that the good students can use them profitably to focus on thinking and questioning rather than writing frantically while still encouraging them to engage with problem solving. I would like to preserve this aspect of the course rather than simply deleting most of my digital content.

My SLAC has had virtually nothing to say about new ADA guidelines regarding student-facing digital content being fully accessible. However, this revamp seems like the appropriate time to make all new materials going forward so that they are compliant.

What is the best way to do this, especially noting that my content uses a lot of diagrams and equations? In the past, I have use PowerPoint and Equation Editor. I am willing to learn a new set of software if necessary, but I know that my expanded job description will limit the bandwidth that I have for too much of the headbanging that always comes in the early stage of new tech adoption. What is your preferred set of tools for streamlined sharing of STEM content that is ADA compliant?

Old laundry products - trash or save?

I'm painting my laundry room and discovered some products that haven't been used in at least 10 years. Are any of these likely to still be good? (I do lazy laundry; the starch is for crafts.)

What specialist and home treatment for nose zit?

The photos are so much less impressive than the reality. I have what I assume is just a big zit deep in my nose. It is so obnoxiously painful for something that looks so uneventful. This has been going on for 3 days now. My nose is now deflected slightly to the side, the bag under my left eye is puffy, and my upper left molars hurt. I use hot compresses and coat it in neosporin several times a day. I am alternating Tylenol and Ibuprofen every 3 hours and am being woken up by the pain in the middle of the night for more drugs. I am noticeably more bitchy with my family.

I desperately want to squeeze the hell out of it and pop it, but (1) I don't see a head, (2) that would be unimaginably painful but maybe worth it, and (3) the internet tells me that I really don't want to be poking holes into a chasm of infection so close to my brain.

I'm at the limit of my home treatment and am going to a doctor tomorrow. (I leave town in 3 days and certainly can't be dealing with this on an airplane and while trying to work on-site!) I assume that they will just give me some antibiotics, but I'm obviously not a doctor and don't know what is appropriate.

What kind of doctor do I go to? (I'm in the US and have OK insurance.) My GP will very likely see me same-day, but I worry that he might refer me to an ENT, so maybe I should just start there. Will a tele-doc be sufficient?

Also, are there home treatments that will make tonight less uncomfortable?

Big booms in East Memphis

What is with the booms tonight? I am used to hearing the range near Shelby Farms, but this seems much louder and more frequent.

Number associated with stranger's account. How can I talk to a human in customer support?!

My teen's number is associated with a stranger's account, so she cannot set up her own. The help menus tell us to contact customer support with proof that we own the number, but I cannot for the life of me make that happen.

The phone tree does not deal with this topic, and I can't seem to access a human. The app and online help pages open up an AI chat box that tells me to go the app help page where I started. Online it recommends sending a message, but there is no link to send such a message.

How do I contact a human to look at my documentation?!

Setting up an independent account for a teen

My 16yo needs to be able to get around Boston independently on short notice. Can she just set up account (ignoring the 18+ that I am sure is in the fine print) and go from there?

Alternately, should we just go with the teen account? I don't want her to be stranded because I am not available to order and approve the ride or because drivers don't want the hassle of the special service, but if the teen account works smoothly then we can just go with that.

(We got ourselves in a bad loop with one of the money apps: We tried to set up the adult account, failed because there was a check of the age, and then had trouble setting up the teen account because there was already half an account out there associated with the same number. We want to avoid that issue.)

Host gifts from Memphis

My teen will spend a month in Boston this summer as an exchange student (of sorts). I would like to send her with some small gifts for her host family that feature Memphis. They are older middle aged professional artists with a 4yo child, but otherwise I don't know too much about them. Ideas?

Bruh, I'm tired

How do you do this? I just sat through a 2 hour long middle school band concert, and I am EXHAUSTED. How the hell do you do this for 7 hours a day every day?! I wasn't even in charge of keeping anyone alive, to say nothing of forcing knowledge into their brains; I was just existing in the space with 150 teenagers and their brass instruments, and I am in desperate need of a gummy, a nap, and a double dose of birth control.

(For the record, the music varied from fine to excellent, and the behavior wasn't eggregious. It was just a lot of everything.

Ohh, and they invited the high school marching band to play the opening set to drum up interest for the incoming class. Multiple snare drums and cymbals marching down the isles of a cinderblock auditorium is simply too much of everything.)

Anyway, thank you all, and a special toast to those who surround themselves with middle schoolers and loud instruments that they don't know how to play.

Outside capacitor and inside blower motor out at the same time

Yesterday, our AC unit started making terrible sounds and blowing warm air. We called a repairman. He first checked in the attic and diagnosed us as needing a new blower motor. The unit is from 2003, so we decided to replace the whole thing. Ouch, but ok.

Then I offhand asked him to look at the outside unit where I heard the worst sounds, and he diagnosed the capacitor as being blown. He replaced the capacitor in a few minutes, and it fired right up and sounded normal.

He says that this isn't the only problem and that the blower still has to be replaced, blaming power fluctuations on taking both out at once. (We had regional storms and a power outage a week ago, but it has worked since then.) We have used this company in the past, and they have actually fixed tiny issues without even charging a service fee (notably an embarrassing example of the heat not working at the beginning of the season because the gas line was still closed after a months-old unrelated repair). So, I generally trust them, but 2 unrelated issues at the same time feels odd, and $3400 is worth getting right.

Does this sound reasonable?

Weekend vet

My dog has torn off a nail. It is very tender, but she will walk on it if sufficiently distracted. There is blood where she slept, but not puddles of it; it does not seem to be bleeding anymore. Two questions:

  1. Does this warrant an after-hours visit to a specialty vet? (I would take her in if it was a weekday.)
  2. Can you recommend a vet? I don't think this really qualifies as an 'emergency', but perhaps as 'urgent'. I'm not wanting to get surprised by a $500 bill or something, but I also want to take care of my girl. We are in East Memphis but willing to drive a bit.

[CHAT] DMC Moulin Satin getting fluffy when washed

I just finished this piece and washed it as usual (warm water, dish soap, slosh and squeeze gently). The pattern called for the 'whip/thread' (silk, actually) to be made of x-es, but instead I couched a full thickness of DMC Moulin Satin thread. This looked beautiful, glossy, and tightly wound when it went into the wash bowl, but it came out fluffy and dull. (I have laid a piece of raw thread below the stitched and washed one on the second picture, though the sheen doesn't show up well.) That got somewhat better as it dried, but it still lacks the satin finish and tidy construction that it originally had. Is this a usual effect with this floss? Any tips on how to fix it? Professor here.

I am looking back over my grades to check for a particular oddity (2 students swapped lab groups mid-semester), and I am finding many more.

When I look in Speed Grader, I see one score, but when I check the Grades table, there is a different one. It seems like Canvas is assigning grades based on the wrong lab groups, but I have checked who is in what lab group under People, and I have checked which set of lab groups each assignment pulls from in the assignment settings. What am I missing? This is about to be a HUGE headache. Argh!
