Daily Minors Quick-Notes 8/17/26 - The Final (Regular Season) Rookie Monday

Well, here we go…this is our last Rookie Monday of the season…at least for the regular season.  The Dominican Summer League season ends tomorrow (or today, Tuesday the 18th, depending on when you read this), and one of the two Giants teams in the Dominican Summer League will be heading to the very unique postseason that the DSL has…including one Top 30 prospect that was recently traded for.  If they go against the odds and get past the first round, we’ll get one more rookie Monday next week for the start of the Semifinals.  Otherwise…this is it for Mondays.  Plus, a couple of Roster Notes

Player Movement:

The main page has seen the posting about Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson’s push up to the big leagues, after some inconsistent performances in Triple-A.

Another move that has been reported is Lisbel Diaz, moving up to Double-A Richmond to help their playoff run.

As mentioned in the comments yesterday, this leaves Eugene with a very shallow bench.  It should be expected that other moves may be to come to help the system, with either a promotion of a San Jose player up to High-A, and/or incoming draft picks to make their debut.  Keep an eye on things for Tuesday!

Playoff Hunt:

Tuesday is the end of the Dominican Summer League season, which means that we are  about the face the second DSL Cup.

The DSL Cup is the unique way the Dominican Summer League does it’s postseason.  The league has 51 teams, so a regular playoff structure would be wild.  Here’s how it works:

  • There are 16 teams that make the cup.  8 Division Winners, and 8 Wild Cards of the teams with the best non-division winning records.
  • The 16 teams are divided into four groups of four teams, playing round robin-style.
  • Only the winners of each group advance to the Semifinals.  At that point, it’s a standard 4-team playoff structure, wtih the Semifinals being a Best-of-3 round, and the Finals being a Best-of-3 round.

The DSL Giants Black will be going   At 35-20, they are the co-division leaders in the DSL South.  The DSL Giants Orange team is second in the DSL Southwest Division at 31-23, but are eliminated from any chance at one of the wild card spots.

That’s the DSL Cup.  It begins on Thursday, with the Semifinal round starting on Sunday.

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 8/14/26 - Luis Hernández Reaches New High in San Jose

It has been a slow start for Luis Hernández since his promotion to High-A, as he showed power early on but not a lot of contact.  But now, he’s got a 9-game hitting streak going, and had 3 hits in a game for the first time in High-A.  Meanwhile, Eugene had a 3-home run game on their way to a win, and Sacramento had an unfinished game but there were a couple of good notes coming out of the team’s first three innings.

AAA: SUSPENDED - 3rd Inning - Thunderstorms

Link

The game is planned to be finished on Saturday, August 15th.

I won’t type out the stats on this one, but Las Vegas was up 2-0 in the middle of the third.  Worth noting though, both Marcelo Mayer and Bo Davidson were 2-for-2 (Mayer had one double) and Parks Harber was 1-for-1 with a walk.  And trade acquisition Anthony Molina was on the mound for Sacramento.

AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels 9, Harrisburg Senators 7

Link

Player of the Game: C Jancel Villarroel (19): 2-4, 3 RBI, 1 2B (2)

The two hits today gave Jancel Villarroel a batting average back over .200 for the first time since his first couple of games in Double-A.  The double was just his second extra-base hit of the month in nine games played this season.  Overall, it’s his ninth double in 64 games this season, with two triples and eight home runs.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • CF Trevor Cohen (14): 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 3B (2) - Cohen has a batting line of .307/.328/.430 in Double-A this season.
  • 2B Jean Carlos Sió: 1-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 SF, 1 E (6) - Sió had his second multi-hit game in the last five games, but has seen his average dive from .273 to .223 since the start of July.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • DH Gavin Kilen (6): 0-3, 2 R, 2 BB
  • Yunior Marte (25): DNP

Other Notable Lines:

  • LF Jose Astudillo: 0-1, 1 R - INJURY ALERT - This play was crazy, but after an error on a rundown, Astudillo was sprinting home and was beaten by a throw to the then-pitcher covering the plate.  Both Astudillo and the pitcher lowered their shoulders into each other, and Astudillo looked like he hit the pitcher’s shoulder either with his head or close to it.  Astudillo stayed down for a bit, but walked off the field mostly under his own power.
  • SS Maui Ahuna: 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K

High-A: Eugene Emeralds 6, Hillsboro Hops 5

Link

Player of the Game: LF Walker Martin: 2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 HR (18)

Walker Martin now has a total of seven home runs since the All-Star Break as he has been doing much better since then.  In August, he’s got a batting line of .231/.308/.421 with his three home runs.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • SP Niko Mazza: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 HR - Mazza bounced back from one of his worst starts to posting a new season high in strikeouts.
  • 3B Zander Darby: 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 K, 1 HR (16) - Darby has nine home runs since the All-Star Break.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • SS Jhonny Level (4): 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K
  • CF Lisbel Diaz (30): 1-4, 1 K
  • Ramon Marquez (5): DNP
  • Jacob Bresnahan (9): DNP
  • Henry Lalane (11): DNP
  • Luis De La Torre (26): DNP

Other Notable Lines:

  • DH Robert Hipwell: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 HR (5)
  • C Daniel Rogers: 2-2, 1 RBI

Low-A: San Jose Giants 6, Fresno Grizzlies 4

Link

Player of the Game: SS Luis Hernández (2): 3-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K

It was Luis Hernández’s sixth 3-hit game of the season, but his first with San Jose.  After a slow start in High-A, Hernández has a 9-game hitting streak, and has gone 5-for-9 in the last two games.  He’s jumped his average from .111 to .239 over the hitting streak.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • 2B Josuar Gonzalez (1): 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 3B (3), 1 SB (3) - Gonzalez has back-to-back games with triples, and he now has more triples in San Jose than doubles (2) or home runs (2).
  • CF Andy Polanco: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB (36) - In August alone, Polanco has eight steals in ten attempts.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • Keyner Martinez (12): DNP
  • Argenis Cayama (17): DNP
  • 3B Lorenzo Meola (20): 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SF

Rehab Player Lines

  • SP Miguel Mendez (16): 2.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP - ORGANIZATiONAL DEBUT - Coming back from injury, Mendez headed down to Low-A with a good debut start with the Giants.

Other Notable Lines:

  • RF Tanner Mally: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K - This is Mally’s first pro game without a hit.
  • DH Angel Guzman: 2-4, 1 K

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 8/10/26 - A Quiet 2nd-to-Last Rookie Monday

The season is in the dog days of August, and that means we are closing in on the end of the DSL season.  In fact, the regular season ends a week from Tuesday, on August 18th!  So enjoy these rookie Monday posts while they last…because when they are done, the end of the overall minor league season is close too.  Plus, Jhonny Level got some honors from various prospect publications for his work this past week as Eugene visited Spokane!

Northwest League Player of the Week - Jhonny Level

Jhonny Level only got into four games this past week, thanks to one game cancellation due to the wildfires, but he had a heck of a week.  He went 9-for-16 (.563) with one triple and two home runs, and with six walks to just two strikeouts.  It’s a nice turn for Level, who had been struggling a bit since the All-Star Break and had missed a few games.  In 48 games at High-A, he’s slashing .296/.358/.490 with 17 doubles, one triple, and seven home runs.

In addition to this, Jhonny Level was Number 1 on the Baseball America Hot Sheet, where they note that he’s just one of nine players in the minors who are 19 or younger, who have 15+ home runs and less than 100 strikeouts.

And Level also was on this week’s MLB Pipeline Prospect Team of the Week (despite getting called one of the youngest players in the MIDWEST League…😒), alongside a certain outfielder in Sacramento…one Jonah Cox, who really has been ignored in the post discussions on here this week.

AAA through Low-A: Scheduled Day Off

DSL Orange: DSL Cubs Red 3, DSL Giants Orange 0 (7 Innings)

Notable Lines:

  • 1B Albert Jimenez: 2-3, 1 K
  • 2B Jonathan Valle: 1-3, 1 2B (4)
  • RP Jhon Leon: 2.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

DSL Black: DSL Giants Black 2, DSL Arizona Red 1

Top Prospect Lines:

  • SS Joniel Hernandez (21): 0-4, 1 K

Notable Lines:

  • C Diego Alambarrio: 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 HR (1), 1 HBP
  • CF Djean Macares: 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 SF, 1 SB (23)
  • SP Randry De Leon: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

DSL Playoff Hunt:

The Giants’ Dominican Summer League squads are not filled with a lot of top prospects, but both are at least in the push for the postseason, with one team having much better odds than the other.

DSL Cup Playoff Structure

Like last season, the DSL Playoffs will be a tournament format.  With eight divisions and 51 teams in the league, 16 teams will make the playoffs!  The eight division winners, and the eight non-division winning teams with the best records will be divided into four 4-team pools, who will go into pool play.

After round robin play, only the top team in each pool will advance to a 2-stage Championship Bracket

DSL Giants Orange - 27-23, 4th in the DSL Southwest, 2.0 games back of the 29-21 DSL Mariners - Tied for 25th best record in the league

The DSL Orange team has the tougher road to the Majors.  2.0 games out with 5.0 games to play is not ridiculous to make up, but there’s two other teams between the division title and the Giants.  And the Orange team is also only technically two games back in the wild card race, but that’s a lot of teams to overcome to get there.  Division title is the surer road to pursue.

DSL Giants Black - 32-18, 1st in the DSL South, 1.5 games ahead of the t-2nd DSL Blue Jays Red and DSL Arizona Red Teams - Tied for 5th Place for the best record in the league, 4.0 GB of first place DSL Royals Ventura and DSL Padres Gold teams

The DSL Giants Black team is in a far better position, and while they haven’t clinched a playoff spot yet, it’s pretty assured they’ll be in the postseason mix.  Even if they fall short of the division title, they have a great standing to make it to the DSL Cup.

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 8/5/26 - Walker Martin Hits A Pair of Homers

We’re getting into the dog days of August, the heat is bearing down and so are the playoffs, and the Giants have three teams with playoff berths confirmed.  Eugene hasn’t gotten their reload of prospects after the trade deadline, but they are rolling, led by Walker Martin getting a pair of home runs.  Meanwhile, Greg Farone struck out ten for Richmond, Turner Hill was the best player of last month and kept it going this month, and extra innings didn’t go so well for a pair of teams, and a new member of the Giants organization in Sacramento.

AAA: Round Rock Express 13, Sacramento River Cats 10 (11 Innings)

Link

Player of the Game: CF Turner Hill: 3-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 2B (16), 1 HR (8)

Turner Hill was named the PCL Player of the Month for July after posting a .422 average and a 1.101 OPS on the month, and he just kept it up after getting the honor.  His hitting streak goes to 21 games with this game, and this is the fourth time he had a 3-hit game in the streak.  His Triple-A batting line is .348/.419/.507.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • RF Scott Bandura: 3-5, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 2B (13), 1 SB (15) - Bandura had his 10th 3-hit game of the season, six of them occurring with the River Cats.
  • SP Joe Whitman (26): 2.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR - Whitman had the “start”, his first since June 30th, and had his longest game since then, but it was still just 2.0 innings.
  • 2B Diego Velasquez: 2-4, 2 K, 1 HBP - LEVEL DEBUT - Velasquez got promoted after hitting .295/.384/.406 in Double-A this season over 85 games.
  • RP Alex Carrillo: 0.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K - ORGANIZATIONAL DEBUT - A forgetting debut for Carrillo, who was released by the Mets in early July, and was signed as a minor league free agent.
  • DH Jonah Cox (17): 3-5, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 2 SB (6) - Cox has three hits in each of his last three games.  Over six games in Sacramento, he’s 12-for-27 (.444).

Rehabbing Player Lines:

  • LF Victor Bericoto: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B (6) - This was Bericoto’s first rehab game, his last game being back on July 9th.  He played just five innings.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • LF Bo Davidson (6): 0-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 SF
  • 3B Parks Harber (12): 0-4, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Trent Harris (24): DNP

Other Notable Lines:

  • 1B Will Brennan: 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 CS (2)

AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels 6, Reading Fightin Phils 5

Link

Player of the Game: SP Greg Farone: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K

Greg Farone set himself a new season high in strikeouts with ten as he continues to improve in the summer.  Farone has allowed two runs or less in four of his last five starts, after only doing that three times in his previous 13 starts.  He lowered his Double-A ERA to 5.78 through 20 games, and has 87 strikeouts to 42 walks in 85.2 innings.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • CF Trevor Cohen (11): 3-5, 1 SB (9) - Cohen has had multiple hits in each of his last eight games, going 19-for-38 (.500).  He’s raised his average from .212 to .366 in Double-A.
  • 3B Charlie Szykowny: 1-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HR (12) - Szykowny got his first home run since June 30, after he went homerless in July.
  • C Jancel Villarroel (25): 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR (1) - It took nine games in Double-A for Villarroel to get his first home run, giving him eight in the season in 57 total games.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • SS Gavin Kilen (4): 1-4, 1 K
  • Yunior Marte (27): DNP

Other Notable Lines:

  • 2B Maui Ahuna: 1-2, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (18)
  • RP Ben Peterson: 0.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 WP - This was Peterson’s first game back in Richmond since June 17, he had one rehab game in the ACL on July 21st.
  • Jean Carlos Sió: 1-4, 3 RBI, 1 K - I’m just including this because the other week in Richmond, Roger Munter interviewed Sió for his podcast There R Giants, and found out that Sió’s name had an accent on the ‘O’, which had never been displayed that way on the official MiLB’s sites, and he told the Richmond front office guys (who are seriously great guys).  Today was the first time I noticed that Sió’s name is represented correctly in the system.  Respect.

High-A: Eugene Emeralds 5, Spokane Indians 1

Link

Player of the Game: 3B Walker Martin: 2-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 K, 2 HR (17)

What a big game for Walker Martin, having his first multi-homer game of the season, and the third such game in his career.  He has 17 home runs in 87 games this season so far, which is easily the best total of his career.  His batting line is .234/.314/.432 on the year.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • SS Jhonny Level (3): 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 3B (1), 1 HR (6) - Level had his second straight game with two hits and two walks, but in this game they both went for extra bases.
  • SP Jacob Bresnahan (8): 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HBP - Another strong game for Bresnahan, his first shutout game since July 3rd.  He lowered his season ERA to 2.72.
  • CF Lisbel Diaz (30): 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR (16), 1 CS (7) - Diaz now has 19 total home runs on the season, if he gets one more, he’ll double the amount he had in both 2025 and 2024.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • Ramon Marquez (7): DNP
  • Henry Lalane (9): DNP
  • Miguel Mendez (14): DNP
  • Luis De La Torre (18): DNP
  • Kaeden Kent (22): DNP

Other Notable Lines:

  • 2B Zane Zielinski: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K, 2 SB (11)
  • DH Zander Darby: 1-5, 1 R, 1 SB (6)

Low-A: Stockton Ports 11, San Jose Giants 6 (10 Innings)

Link

Player of the Game: 1B Jeremiah Jenkins: 3-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 2B (21), 1 HR (15), 2 HBP

Possibly riding the high of hitting the walkoff home run last night, Jeremiah Jenkins had a perfect on-base game, with a double and another home run.  Through 77 games, Jenkins has 21 doubles, two triples, and 15 home runs, with a batting line of .241/.381/.498.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • SS Luis Hernández (2): 2-5, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 2B (2) - Hernández has gone 6-for-38 (.162) so far in San Jose, but four of the six hits have been for extra bases, with two doubles and two home runs.
  • 2B Lorenzo Meola (20): 2-6, 1 R, 1 K, 1 2B (33) - Meola has back-to-back 2-hit games with three doubles across them.  He’s got a .256/.338/.448 batting line.
  • CF Andy Polanco: 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 2B (14) - So far in July, Polanco is 8-for-17 (.471) with a double and two triples.

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 8/4/26 - San Jose Walks it Off With A Comeback Home Run

Eugene might be getting all the new players from the trade deadline, but San Jose still has a bit of a lineup to pay attention to, as Jeremiah Jenkins had the heroic home run and looked great doing it.

https://preview.redd.it/zrgqkddnfihh1.jpg?width=2235&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=afbcb54d3014309b6258ecc66802092c7ff51c6b

Meanwhile, Jonah Cox is officially in Triple-A and still hitting, believe it or not.  Rain took out another game in the Eastern League.  One of the newest Giants debuted down in the Dominican Summer League.  And a heartwarming homecoming for Eugene’s Hunter Dryden in a city that is in the middle of a huge disaster.

AAA: Sacramento River Cats 6, Round Rock Express 4

Link

Player of the Game: CF Jonah Cox (17): 3-5, 3 RBI, 2 SB (4)

In his first official game as a Triple-A player, as in one who is not on a rehab assignment, Cox had three singles, just like he had in his last rehab game.  Since joining Triple-A, Cox is 9-for-22 (.409) over five games with one triple and four steals.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • C Adrian Sugastey: 2-4, 2 R - Sugastey is hitting .323 over nine games since joining Sacramento.
  • LF Turner Hill: 1-2, 3 R, 2 BB, 1 SB (23) - Hill’s hitting streak hit 20 games, the longest in the PCL this season and third-longest in franchise history.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • RF Bo Davidson (6): 0-2, 2 BB, 1 SB (4)
  • 3B Parks Harber (12): 1-4, 1 K
  • Trent Harris (24): DNP
  • Joe Whitman (26): DNP

Other Notable Lines:

  • 2B Thomas Gavello: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 2B (7), 1 SB (8)
  • RP Spencer Bivens: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

AA: POSTPONED

More rainouts back east.  This one is currently planned to be made up on Thursday.

High-A: Eugene Emeralds 13, Spokane Indians 1

Link

Player of the Game: SP Hunter Dryden: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR

A bit of emotion on this one.  Hunter Dryden set the tone in this series opener in Spokane against the Indians, but this was emotional because Dryden himself is a Spokane native, and the area is dealing with wildfires that have destroyed hundreds of homes.  Dryden has a 4.98 ERA on the season in High-A, with 94 strikeouts to 44 walks in 81.1 innings.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • 3B Zander Darby: 2-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (14) - Darby has back-to-back games with a home run in each, and already has two home runs in August after having six in July.
  • SS Jhonny Level (3): 2-3, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SF - With two hits and two walks, Level now has a High-A line of .280/.335/.446.
  • LF Jose Ramos: 1-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 1 2B (4), 1 SF - Ramos has drawn seven walks over his last four games, and has a .479 OBP over a .294 average.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • CF Lisbel Diaz (30): 1-5, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 2B (15)
  • Ramon Marquez (7): DNP
  • Jacob Bresnahan (8): DNP
  • Henry Lalane (9): DNP
  • Miguel Mendez (14): DNP
  • Luis De La Torre (18): DNP
  • Kaeden Kent (22): DNP

Other Notable Lines:

  • 2B Zane Zielinski: 2-2, 4 R, 3 BB, 1 CS (3)
  • 1B Hayden Jatczak: 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB< 1 K, 1 2B (2)
  • DH Walker Martin: 2-5, 2 RBI, 2 K

Low-A: San Jose Giants 5, Stockton Ports 4

Link

Player of the Game: 1B Jeremiah Jenkins: 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (14)

Gotta give this one to the walk-off winner.  Jenkins had two out in the bottom of the 9th with a runner off and a runner down, and he lined a screamer down the right field line for his 14th home run of the season, and his second walkoff home run of the season.  Jenkins has a batting line of .237/.372/.478 on the season, with 101 strikeouts to 56 walks in 76 games.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • RF Cam Maldonado: 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HR (14) - Maldonado kept the home runs going now that he’s home from Rancho Cucamonga, and has home runs in back-to-back games.

Roster Moves

We had a couple of roster moves worth noting.

• Diego Velasquez promoted to Triple-A from Double-A - Big move for El Pollo, as Velasquez moves up after the team promoted Eddys Leonard from Sac to the big leagues. Velasquez has a line of .295/.384/.406 on the season.

• Ben Peterson activated from the IL, sent directly to Richmond - One of the team's better pre-deadline relief pitchers, Peterson will get back to action on Tuesday.

• Almost all the trade deadline people went to High-A Eugene. Only Joniel Hernandez (DSL) and Anthony Molina (AAA) didn't go to High-A to start their careers.

• RHP Austin Strickland was released. He had an 8.64 ERA across 24 middle relief slots with 36 strikeouts to 33 walks.

Massive apartment fire in Foster City continues to burn Monday (KRON 4 News)

Once the fire is extinguished (it's still not extinguished as of 9:08 AM!), there are going to be two questions that need to be answered:

• How did this start? (Obviously)

• How did this fire become so difficult to contain and extinguish?

There have been some reporting and rumors that the fire started on the first floor from a BBQ, but that does remain unconfirmed and we won't see an announcement anytime soon on that. But with multiple other buildings in that complex, one has to ask about how the fire grew and burned to keep the tenants in those buildings safe, and all of their belongings safe, for the future.

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 7/27/26 - Rookie Monday

Yeah…especially with the ACL season over, Mondays are just the Dominican Summer League right now, and I don’t have any top prospects for you to specifically keep an eye on here (though it’s clear which team is performing better than the other).  In addition, we have an update on Josuar Gonzalez!

Josuar Gonzalez Update

This was posted earlier on the sub, but just in case…Alex Pavlovic posted on Twitter that Josuar is expected to be back in the San Jose lineup Tuesday night, missing just one game and getting the offday.  FWIW, Pavlovic describes what caused Gonzalez to come out of the game as a “cramp”.

San Jose is on the road down south with the newly-Angelized Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, so those of you in the Bay can’t go buy tickets to see him, and I’m guessing we probably won’t get the NBC Sports coverage the last couple of games have gotten.  MiLB.tv will have the stream though, if you’re subscribed to it.

Pitcher of the Week Award

I usually haven’t included these awards by MiLB in these reports, but heck, there’s not much to talk about today.  Trent Harris, who has suddenly been starting for the River Cats, had two starts this week and was terrific, and earned the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week.  He pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, one walk, and one hit-batter, while striking out 12.  I genuinely don’t know if this means the team wants him to stretch out as a starter going forward, of if this is just some bullpen games for a pitching-depleted Sacramento team and he’s been designated a starter for those games.

BUT if you really want my opinion: He’s still a reliever, he’s just starting bullpen games. My reasoning is that rather than having the normal 5-days off between starts, Harris started on July 21st and July 25th, a quick turnaround.  That’s more of a reliever time between stints than starter time between outings.

ACL: Season Over

u/BruteSentiment — 24 days ago

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 7/23/26 - The ACL Ends; Josuar and Luis Now Know The Way…you know the song….

Welp, the ACL season ended today, no playoffs…but somehow, I don’t think any prospect watchers are upset since we got official word that Luis Hernandez and Josuar Gonzalez will be getting promoted to San Jose!  Meanwhile, Yunior Marte had a spectacular start in Richmond, while the Double-A bullpen looks just like the MLB bullpen.  And in serious news, we had a fireworks mishap in Richmond, that thankfully seems to have passed without any injury.

Promotions:

Okay, let’s start with the big one: on the Glen Kuiper show, Kyle Haines, the Senior Director of Player Development, announced that the Giants will be sending up Josuar Gonzalez and Luis Hernandez to San Jose.  He ironically noted that they usually don’t make announcements before the players know, and he was waiting for the game to end in the ACL to officially tell the players…though, its hard to believe neither would not be expecting something.  Still, we’ve got the news.  And I’m sure Glen probably got a huge viewership boost with this breaking news.  (Side note, he also announced Argenis Cayama is coming off the IL to return to San Jose, too.)

Here’s the lin to the full interview if you want: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VN1zd_1nxms

TBH, it was funny that the SJ Giants FKA Twitter team gave the 👀 emoji to a post about this…I legitimately believe that was the first they heard of it.

One important note: we do not know when exactly the guys will be up.  The only thing I will say is that don’t expect it to be Friday.  But it could be either Saturday or Sunday, it could legitimately not be until Tuesday, with Monday being a normal travel day.

News:

I want to put this up front (though under the promotions everyone wants to read).  There was a scary non-baseball moment at the Richmond Flying Squirrels game tonight, during the post-game fireworks show.  As an eyewitness, I did not see what was happening (I was downloading photos in the press box away from the window), but after hearing crowd noise that was not usual, I saw some rockets shooting across the outfield, parallel to the ground, I’m not entirely sure where from.  I saw at least one rocket appear to go into the stands on the right field side, another hit the short side fence near the third base dugout, a third seemed to shoot through the net into the tunnel.  Other people in the press box said they saw as many as six rockets go into the crowd, but I could not confirm that.

The good news: There were no apparent injuries.  Once the rockets were stopped early, I went down to the stands, I saw no one calling for or in need of help, no first responders.  Fans seemed more amused than anything, there was no panic, and everyone was leaving the stadium calmly without instruction.  The team had no comment by the time I left the stadium.

AAA: Sacramento River Cats 4, Oklahoma City Comets 2

Link

Player of the Game: LF Turner Hill: 1-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1-1 ABS

Turner Hill got on base three times as he continues to be one of the best contact hitters and on-base guys in the Pacific Coast League.  He has 32 walks against 24 strikeouts in 73 games at Triple-A, as he’s hitting .332 and has an OBP of .408 for the Pacific Coast League.  He’s 3rd in the PCL for batting average and 7th in on-base percentage, among qualified hitters.  (He’s 14th in slugging (.486) and 13th in OPS (.894).)

Other Players to Spotlight:

Link

Player of the Game: SP Yunior Marte (25): 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 WP, 1 Balk

In training for San Francisco, the bullpen let this game down, but we can’t ignore a fantastic start by Yunior Marte, who threw seven shutout innings, scattering four hits and two walks against six strikeouts.  Some good defense behind him helped things out, but it started on the mound.  Through nine starts in Richmond, he has a 4.36 ERA with 48 strikeouts to 13 walks in 43.1 innings.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • CF Trevor Cohen (8): 2-4, 1 K, 1 2B (1) - In a game without much offense, Cohen’s double was the only Richmond extra-base hit.  He’s now 7-for-26 (.269) in Double-A with a double and triple.
  • 3B Diego Velasquez: 2-3, 1 RBI - Velasquez had the clutch hit to knock in Richmond’s only run.  He’s now hitting .307 on the season.
  • 2B Maui Ahuna (18): 1-3, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB (16) - Ahuna got his first hit since the break, and is hitting .213 on the year.

Another multi-hit game for Isaiah Barkett, his third in six games at High-A.  He’s 8-for-25 (.320) since his promotion now, with a home run, and three walks against three strikeouts.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • 1B Zander Darby: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 HR (10) - Darby reached double-digit home runs for the first time.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • 1B Robert Hipwell: 1-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SF - Since returning to Low-A, Hipwell is 2-for-9 (.222) over three games.

Player of the Game: SS Luis Hernández (2): 1-3, 1 RBI

We’ll finish the ACL season with the most exciting and top performing prospect in the ACL, 17-year old Luis Hernández.  Luis finished the ACL season with a .298/.382/.535 batting line, with 19 doubles, five triples, and six home run, and 25 walks to 38 strikeouts.  On the Glen Kuiper show today, Kyle Haines confirmed that both Hernandez and Josuar Gonzalez will be going to San Jose to finish the season.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • 2B Josuar Gonzalez (1): 1-3 - In just 30 games, Gonzalez finishes with a .343/.451/.515 batting line, 20 walks to 25 strikeouts, and seven doubles, two triples, and two home runs.

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 7/12/26 - Ready For A (All-Star) Break

As all the “stars” of baseball head to Philadelphia, All the A-ball level teams played one last game before they get to have a vacation.  But it was still a busy day, between the draft, the All-Star Futures Game, and a slate of four games to go.  Also, we’ve got a lot of news about promotions to come after the All-Star Break, as well as what the schedule looks like for the next week!

Promotion News:

Susan Slusser’s reporting has pretty much confirmed, from the players themselves, that Dakota Jordan and Gavin Kilen will be getting promoted from High-A to Double-A after the upcoming All-Star Break.  Justice De Los Santos followed that up with the unsurprising confirmation that Bo Davidson will be getting promoted from Double-A to Triple-A.

That’s all I’ve seen confirmed, but I believe there will be more movement.  We know about those guys because, you know, top prospects!  But one has to think there will be more movement (and honestly, the shallow benches for hitters across the farm system kind of demands it).

Look, I’m just happy this will redistribute some of the Top Prospects, because Eugene just has too big a glut of them!

The biggest question is, of course, will Luis Hernandez and Josuar Gonzalez come up to San Jose after the break, or wait around for the end of the ACL, if they come up at all (a real possibility for Josuar and his hamstring).  If you really want my prediction…my prediction is that Luis Hernandez will come up to San Jose right away, but Josuar will stick behind in the ACL for the final couple of weeks.  Doing this will allow Josuar to take advantage of the less stringent circumstances in Arizona, where he can play less often and play only seven inning games and not nine inning games.

We may not get the actual news until Friday.  So…speculate away!!!

Post Draft Re-Rankings

Obviously, the Giants have a few new big names in their system after this weekend…well, not yet at least, until they sign.  However, these rankings I have are from MLB Pipeline, so they won’t update until Pipeline does, which likely won’t come until late July, or maybe even early August after the trade deadline.

If you ask me, Jackson Flora will probably slot into the Top 5, and Carson Boleman will end up somewhere between 11-15.

ASG Futures Game: AL Futures 6, NL Futures 1 (7 Innings)

Link

Giants Prospects

  • 2B Gavin Kilen (4): 0-1
  • CF Dakota Jordan (5): 1-1, 1 2B

Neither Giant was in the starting lineup, but came in halfway through the short game.  The AL prospects ran away with the game.  Dakota Jordan had the NL’s only extra-base hit with his double.  It was one of only three extra-base hits in the entire game, and one of only four NL hits.

AAA: Salt Lake Bees 11, Sacramento River Cats 8

Link

Player of the Game: 3B Dayson Croes: 4-4, 1 R, 3 RBI, 2 2B (2), 1 SF

This was Croes’ 17th game in Triple-A this season, and his two doubles today were his first at the level (and gave him nine doubles overall).  This was Croes’ first 4-hit game in the minor leagues in his two seasons.  With the River Cats, he has a batting line of .250/.302/.339.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • CF Turner Hill: 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B (13) - Hill is 7-for-18 (.389) over his last four games, with two doubles, a triple and a home run.
  • SS Aeverson Arteaga: 3-5, 2 RBI, 1 K - Arteaga’s 3-hit game broke a 4-game hitless streak, pushing his average back up to .252.
  • 1B Jake Holton: 2-4, 2 R, 1 BB - Holton had his first multi-hit game since back on June 30th.  He’s hitting .218 with Sacramento.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • RP Trent Harris (20): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HR, 1 HBP
  • Blade Tidwell (9): DNP
  • Carson Whisenhunt (11): DNP
  • Joe Whitman (23): Stats

Rehabbing Player Lines:

  • C Daniel Susac: 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B (1), 1 SB (2) - Susac is 4-for-11 (.364) with a double and a home run in three rehab games this time around.  He’s expected to rejoin the Giants after the break.

Other Notable Lines:

  • SP Eric Cerantola: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB 0 K - 😬
  • 2B Thomas Gavello: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 2B (6)

AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels 5, Altoona Curve 3

Link

Player of the Game: 3B Parks Harber (13): 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 2B (20), 1 SB (2)

Another player for whom there’s questions about impending promotions is Parks Harber, who has had more ups than down during his run in Double-A so far.  With his 20th double in his 66th game, he’s one short of how many he had in all of 2021 over 79 games.  He’s also one home run short of last year’s total, and two triples short.  He’s got a batting line of .284/.369/.510.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • DH Bo Davidson (6): 2-5, 1 R, 2 K, 1 2B (12) - In Davidson’s final game at Richmond, he got a pair of hits.  His batting line at Richmond is .277/.340/.521 with 12 doubles and 19 home runs.
  • CF Jean Carlos Sio: 2-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 HR (8) - Sio now has 13 home runs in 53 games overall this season.
  • SS Maui Ahuna (18): 1-2, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP - Ahuna now has 29 walks in 74 games, against 103 strikeouts.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • Yunior Marte (25): DNP

Other Notable Lines:

  • LF Diego Velasquez: 2-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 2B (17), 1 SB (18)
  • SP Tristan Vrieling: 6.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

High-A: Eugene Emeralds 9, Spokane Indians 5

Link

Player of the Game: RF Lisbel Diaz (30): 2-4, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2 HR (14)

Lisbel Diaz’s strong July continued with his second 2-home run game of the month.  He’s 15-for-45 (.333) with two doubles and seven home runs on the month.  Including games at other levels, Diaz has a batting line of .266/.307/.513 with 11 doubles, two triples, and 17 home runs.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • 2B Zander Darby: 2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 2B (16), 1 HR (7) - Darby got his first home run since May 27th, and may be starting to turn himself around from the slump he’s been in the past six weeks.
  • DH Jakob Christian: 2-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 K, 1 HR (8) - Christian now has back-to-back games with two hits and one home run.
  • SS Jhonny Level (3): 2-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 SB (6) - Level is 15-for-46 (.326) in July, and got his first steal since June 24th.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • CF Trevor Cohen (8): 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
  • LF Carlos Gutierrez (14): 1-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
  • SP Luis De La Torre (15): 5.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 9 K, 2 HR, 1 WP
  • Jacob Bresnahan (7): DNP
  • Jancel Villarroel (22): DNP
  • Gerelmi Maldonado (29): DNP

Other Notable Lines:

  • RP Ubert Mejias: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
  • C Onil Perez: 2-4

Low-A: San Jose Giants 12, Visalia Rawhide 5

Link

Player of the Game: 1B Jeremiah Jenkins: 3-6, 2 R, 4 RBI, 1 K, 1 2B (18), 1 HR (13)

Over 11 games this July, Jeremiah Jenkins has collected four doubles and five home runs, though he’s still hitting just .261 (12-for-46) on the month, which is the same average as he has on the full season.

Other Players to Spotlight:

Meet the San Francisco Firebells - San Francisco's Women's Professional Baseball Team has a name and logo

The San Francisco Firebells.

All the names of these teams are tributes to pioneering women, and San Francisco's is a tribute to name we probably all know, but most of us may not know the story behind.

Lillie Hitchcock was a teenager in San Francisco's formative decade of the 1850's. At the age of 15 in 1858, she witnessed a fire on Telegraph Hill, and despite being a young woman, she helped the shorthanded Knickerbocker Engine Company #5 get up the hill to fight the fire, in an age when firefighting companies competed with others to get to a fire and get paid.

After this, Lillie became a "mascot" of sorts for the fire company, hanging out with the company and going on calls. Her (rich) family did not feel her behavior was befitting a young woman, and sent her to live in Europe, but when she returns in 1863 as a 20-year old, she went right back to supporting the engine company and challenging gender norms in the city as an avid partier, drinker, and gambler.

She eventually married a man named Howard Coit, taking his name, but later divorcing him in 1880.

While Lillie's life eventually took her away from San Francisco, she loved the city before she passed in 1929. She left the city a third of her sizable estate that was "to be expended in an appropriate manner for the purpose of adding to the beauty of the city which I have always loved". Among other things, the majority of the bequest was used to build Coit Tower on top of Telegraph Hill, as well as the statue dedicated to volunteer firefighters in Washington Square Park.

For a city that had several major fires in the 19th century that destroyed much of the then-city, and of course was forever scarred and changed from the earthquake and fire of 1906, I love this name and this logo. It's fitting for the city, and a great tribute to Lillie!

All the WPBL games will be played this season in Springfield Illinois, so we won't get to see them in person this season, but I hope the league continues on and gets to play in their home cities.

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 7/5/26 - Parks Harber Parks a Pair of Roundtrippers

Another day with a 2-home run performance as the fireworks come to an end, as Parks Harber picked up two home runs for himself in a big game for Double-A Richmond.  Meanwhile, “Tugboat” Matt Wilkinson makes his return to Triple-A, though it wasn’t a great one, while a Top 30 prospect pitcher makes a move to the bullpen for the first time…and it’s unsure whether it’s permanent.  And the organization make a surprise release of a 2025 draftee…and I have no answers.

AAA: El Paso Chihuahuas 11, Sacramento River Cats 2

Link

Player of the Game: RF Will Brennan: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR (1)

Well, let’s stick with Will Brennan today to end out this series, hitting the team’s only home run on Sunday.  Since the start of July, Brennan has gone 10-for-21 (.476) with three doubles and a home run.  His overall slash line is .366/.406/.488, with eight walks to 15 strikeouts in 42 games.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • CF Turner Hill: 2-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 2B (11) - Hill now has a total of 13 doubles on the season in 70 games.  In 87 games in 2025, he had 16, and had 19 doubles in 109 games in 2024.
  • LF Scott Bandura: 1-4, 1 K, 1 2B (8) - Overall, Bandura has 17 doubles in 77 games between Double-A and Triple-A.
  • SP Matt Wilkinson: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 1 HBP - Wilkinson returned to Triple-A for the first time since June 17th, and struggled in this first game back.
  • RP Joe Whitman (23): 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K - For the first time this season, and the first time since his rookie season in 2023, Whitman was brought in in relief.  It will be worth noting whether Whitman stays in relief, perhaps being eyed as big league bullpen help sometime this season.

  • Blade Tidwell (9): DNP
  • Carson Whisenhunt (11): DNP

Rehabbing Player Lines:

Other Notable Lines:

Roster Note

An interesting note: the Giants released San Jose LHP Braydon Risley today.  The 21-year old Risley was the Giants 19th round pick out of Grayson Junior College in Texas.  Risley was having a fine season, with a 4.80 ERA with 64 strikeouts to 17 walks in 60.0 innings.  He was the California League Pitcher of the Month in May, and got an unusually large bonus for the 19th round, getting $100,000, when most players in that range get about $10,000 in a signing bonus.  There was no given reason for this release.  Risley has had a very difficult month-plus, posting a 10.00 ERA in June, and he last pitched on Friday, giving up three runs in 4.1 innings, his best start since May, in which he tied his season-high in strikeouts with seven.

Gavin Kilen - With Jhonny Level moving up from San Jose, there was a thought that Kilen might be getting a push to Double-A.  But with a May slump, he did not get the push.  We’ll see how playing time goes, but in Game 1 of them being teammates, the priority went to Gavin Kilen, who stayed at shortstop while Level went to second base

MLB Pipeline Rankings Update:

MLB Pipeline has graduated two Giants off the list.  Trevor McDonald (formerly #16) and Daniel Susac (formerly #21) are both officially off the list.  That’s made room for two new players…and those players are Jonah Cox, who slips into the #25 spot, and Yunior Marte, who becomes number 26!  What that means is there’s also a cascading effect on every prospect through Luis De La Torre (formerly #17) through Joe Whitman (formerly #26) to move up at least one and sometimes two spots.

Since I use the MLB Pipeline rankings for these Daily Minors Quick Notes (since the scouting reports are public), you’ll see those updated numbers next to the various prospects’ names going forward!  A really big update is also on the horizon, once #1 prospect Bryce Eldridge graduates off the list!

Player of the Game: C Jesus Rodriguez (17): 1-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 2B (6), 1 SF, 2-3 ABS

Jesus Rodriguez had a successful return to Triple-A after a solid first major league stint of 14 games in the Majors for the majority of May.  He finished the stint slashing .231/.302/.385 in the bigs.  It’s just a first run, he’s got more work to do in his development.  His Triple-A slash line sits at .333/.403/.451 after 25 games at Sacramento this season.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • SP Blade Tidwell (10): 5.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 2 WP - A solid start at best for Tidwell, giving up a lot of hits and not getting many strikeouts, but two runs in five innings isn’t a bad overall result  His ERA is 6.12 in seven Triple-A games.

Bo Davidson has been on a bigtime slump through the end of May, going 2-for-28 (.071) though eight games at the end of May, and generally hasn’t been the same since a week-long injury break from May 14-20th.  Hopefully this game, with his second and third extra-base hits since that injury, is a sign that he’s going to start turning his season around.

Player of the Game: CF Dakota Jordan (6): 2-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 2B (12), 1 HR (7)

Since May 3rd, Dakota Jordan’s power had disappeared, as he’d hit just three doubles over 21 games, where he went 7-for-94 (.074), but hopefully this game will allow for Jordan to have the kind of turnaround he needs.  On the season, he’s got a slash line of .281/.352/.453 with 12 doubles and seven home runs in 49 games.

Player of the Game: 3B Dario Reynoso: 3-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 HR (8), 2 E (6)

Is it Dario Reynoso’s turn to have a breakout run for San Jose?  Reynoso’s 2-home run game comes on the heels of him hitting a home run in his last game on Sunday, upping his total to eight on the year in 40 games.  Last season, in 68 games, he had 10 home runs (all ten came in 53 ACL games, he didn’t have any in 15 Low-A games.

Top Prospect Lines:
