Moving Pictures quote

Moving Pictures quote

I'm re-reading Moving Pictures which is obviously chock full of film references.

Is this a specific one or just the kind of thing said in films? I can't get a match when I search; Google is determined it's from Aliens but then quotes it as "We don't leave our people behind" which is almost the quote but not.

I also can't parse it into a replace the word quote (like "frankly my dear, I'd give anything for one of Harga's prime pork ribs")

#edit# the second one I gave as an example, I got where it was from 😄 My point was, every other clear reference (like my pictured one, which is drawn attention to with the text noting the spirit of holywood had 'sliced through the Archchancellors mind' is either a word for word or a playful variation (like the Gone with the Wind one). This seems to be neither.

Whether to remove plant matter.

My Messor Barbarus have pulled some plant matterial that was in their delivery test tube out into the connecting chambers.

They can still get to the outworld (left of picture) so I'd assumed they had just decided to block the exit for anything bigger than them, but now I'm wondering if I need to dismantle the chamber to get the plant matter out before it rots/grows.

Atm the colony is in the testtube, so a dismantle now is likely to lead to less escapes than later, but equally dismantling will be a big task and disruptive to my newish colony.

There's also a dead fly (frozen and thawed) they took in and seemingly dumped, or maybe they are taking bits off as needed.

What am I even looking at here?

Found while searching 'platonic version of romeo and juliet' online for context, it's from FB and I think it was captioned 'we're just friends I promise'.

I can't fathom it, is it perhaps a composite of multiple images?

It looks like he's sat on a building, she's sat on his leg and holding his scarf? If not for the forward facing foot I'd also wonder if he was a centaur 😄

Local gift / regional specialty

I'm planning a trip to Japan and reading some guide books, which often highlight the need to give gifts representing a regional specialty from your home area.

Whether it will be necessary is moot, given I'm unlikely to be in a situation where I need to worry about it, but it nevertheless got me thinking.

If I were going to a business meeting then perhaps I'd bring a fine example of Sheffield steel, or some local silverware. But if instead it was more of a token gift, an acknowledgement rather than a valuable item, what would you say would be an appropriate Sheffield item?

The best I'm coming up with is... a smaller amount of Sheffield steel 😅

First ants

Hi, I've just got my first Messor Barbarus queen with a dozen or so workers.

They're all in the test tube which I have wrapped in dark cloth and put out of the way so they are dark, undisturbed and the room is always in the 20's (C).

Am I right that now I do nothing for a week or so, then I can attach them to the nest and outworld? The tube has liquid at the end, stopped with cotton wool, and obviously the plug isn't airtight, I'll keep an eye and make sure the liquid doesn't somehow run out, but are they good while they settle?

Or am I meant to do things sooner?

Thanks all.

Messor Barbarus

Quick question if I may - I'm told if I get a Messor

Barbarus they will need a dry room to store their seeds, so in addition to my gypsum room that I can hydrate with a reservoir I was going to add another gypsum room that I then won't hydrate.

My question is, can that room be after the hydrated room, meaning the ants will have to carry seeds through the hydrated room to the store, or does the store need to be between the outworld and the hydrated room (or off to one side)?

Not sure if I'm overthinking it.

Wakooshi

Hi all, I am looking to get a basic ant habitat from Wakooshi and I’m not sure I am clear on how the pieces will fit together.

I have watched a few videos and can see the outworld and ‘tunnels’ can be joined by small rubber tubes, along with optional screwed braces either side of the tubes. However I cannot see these parts on their site, do they perhaps come with the outworld/tunnels?

Their guide video shows how units connect but appears to be for a different style to the modular versions I am looking at - the images say ‘connection kit sold separately’ but as I say I can’t see any connection kits on their site.

For reference I am looking at a gen 4 medium outworld and a gen 4 medium gypsum 3 way.

(To pre-empt what I'd be thinking if I were you, yes I've already asked them but not had a reply as yet and I'm getting haha antsy haha)

Powerlines

Hi all

If you wanna avoid my waffle, the question is can I remote play my consoles to my laptop using two or three Powerline plugs?

I'd like to occasionally play my PS5/Xbox two floors down, so I've been experimenting. It'll be via my basic laptop and a HDMI cable to the tv, but it's not practical over wifi so I'm looking at doing it all by cables.

I've already a pair of powerlines so could run the console to the router, my question is if I bought another plug for next to my tv for my laptop, will the console talk through the router to the plug? In my head the console and router would talk and the router and laptop would talk, but not pass message on 😄

Wait... can I skip the router and have a plug for the console and one for the laptop... I'm guessing not, as it'll have to go through the router won't it...

Side quests after completion

Hi all

Wanting to replay (and remake) - am I right that when I could play through again ng+ and still do all the sidequests again?

Related, I somehow picked the wrong food for a side quest and it still bugs me; if I pick the right food on the ng+ replay will it 'fix' that on my record?

Easy way to see if me or the ocarina?

Hi all

I was gifted an ocarina and I'm trying to establish whether the off-notes are me or the ocarina (or how much it's me, never played one before so clearly I won't be hitting notes every time).

Some notes go green on my pitch machine thing, others don't. Is it a case of if I can get the note with a bit of fiddling then it's my technique, but if the note just isn't there it's my ocarina?

Just before I throw myself into learning 😀

Credit cards - repaying and using again immediately

I've never had a credit card so apologies if this is obvious.

I'm planning a trip and I'm getting a cc to buy the flights, for the added protection only (I will be paying the card off immediately).

The limit I'm being offered by my bank is around what I expect the tickets to cost; after doing a bit if reading it seems to be a bad idea to get close to my limit however, is that still the case if I'll be paying the debt straight off?

I'm also not clear on timing - say I need to spend 4k and my card is 3k, can I buy one leg for 2k, pay that off and then buy the other leg (and pay that off) 'straight away'? Aside from having to wait a day or so for things to show on the account, is that something I can do?

Waiting period for gradings

I can find references to Iaido waiting periods being 1 year after Shodan, 2 years after Nidan etc...

All I can find for Ikkyu to Shodan is guidance for Kendo, suggesting a minimum of 3 months. Is that the same for Iaido?

UK in case that's relevant :)

Cheap tabi alternatives

Hi all

My home training is done outdoors on my wooden decking. The surface is fairly grippy (not ideal but hey at least I won't put my sword through a ceiling...) and I've been experimenting with footwear.

Trainers are grippy shoes on grippy surface so not the way. I've been wearing my old slipper socks and that's been working for me, except I'm burning through them as the pivoting is wearing the balls of the socks out.

A leather soled tabi seems like the compromise between being able to pivot, without excessive friction and without wearing through them quickly. But they're not cheap and I'm wondering how long I could expect a decent pair to last.

Or if there's a cheaper alternative. I mean, I reckon I could get... well maybe 30 pairs of my cheapy slipper socks or... 18 pairs of some cushioned hiking socks for about what a pair of tabi would cost...

But I've no concept of how hard wearing tabi are, would my decking mess them up and they're only really suited to smooth (dojo) surfaces?

Exit strategy

Not sure if this is an odd question. Also please don't take it as me suggesting I'll give anything other than my best care throughout!

In short, if my T is mid life and I find myself unable to still care for them, will I find a good new hoke easily?

I'd like a tarantula (I'd like a few!) but my main concern is the fact I am no longer young and thinking if I ended up with a female I could still be caring for her in 20 years, by which time I will be oh so old.

Now maybe that's all fine and I'll still be able to care for them easily and all will be well, but I need to know what happens if my hands get doddery or such. Is there a ready tarantula adoption network where I'd post online (or via whatever we have in 20 years 😄) and someone would be like 'yeah they can come live with my 50 for their golden years'?

Having written that I realise any of us could unexpectedly end up unable to care for a T, so perhaps my fixation on my age is moot.

All I keep thinking is when I got my first corn snake at 16 and my mum lecturing me about how I'd still have the snake at 30 (we blew way past that in the end!) and I think it is making me very aware of how old I'd be when my T finally succumbed to age.

I did look at getting a male and so a more manageable lifespan, but all the males I see online are already mature and so it'd be caring for them while they climbed the walls and didn't eat (or moult) for their final 12m, which isn't what I'm looking for really (if my baby turned out male then that's fine to be clear, as I'd still have raised them before they got all obsessive).

Ummm, any comments welcomed. I hope that all made sense!

Hakama pleats - help me start as I mean to go on please

My hakama was getting on a bit (20+ years, though only worn for maybe 5 of them) and I noticed while it definitely had pleats at the top, they were barely noticeable past my knees.

So! New hakama, wooo, nice crisp pleats! My question is... how do I keep them that way? I have tried to fold it back with the pleats flat, though it all got a bit puzzle like trying to work out the order 😄. Do hakama generally keep their pleats unless you store them screwed up, or do I need to keep on top of keeping the pleats?

As I say, I lost the pleats somewhat on my first one, but god knows how it spent the last 20 years, I suspect not neatly folded. And... 20 years, hardly likely to be sharp creases anyway. But I'd like to keep these pleats as long as I can.

#To the people telling me to just get stitched pleats, thanks and I'll bear that in mind for next time, but I've got ones without said stitching atm so it's those I'm looking to preserve. Though good advice for other readers

I've been back to the item and they make a big deal about how the Tetron holds the pleats really easily, and I've watched a few videos and I'm happy I'm folding correctly, so I'll carry on and I'm sure have many years of happy pleats#
