Your favourite British V-8 engine?

For a nation best for In-line 4s and 6s, postwar Britain made several V8 engines. Which ones do you like or find the most interesting?

  • Rolls-Royce / Bentley: L-Series (1959–2020 | 5.2L, 6.25L, 6.75L)
  • Rover / Land Rover: Rover V8 (1967–2006 | 3.5L, 3.9L, 4.0L, 4.2L, 4.6L, 5.0L)
  • Daimler: Daimler V8 (1959–1969 | 2.5L, 4.5L)
  • Aston Martin: Quad-Cam V8 / Tadek Marek V8 (1969–2000 | 5.3L, 6.3L) Wikipedia
  • Triumph: Triumph V8 (1970–1977 | 3.0L)
  • Jaguar: AJ-V8 (1996–Present | 3.2L, 3.5L, 4.0L, 4.2L, 5.0L) Wikipedia
  • TVR: Speed Eight / AJP8 (1996–2003 | 4.2L, 4.5L)
  • Lotus: Type 918 (1996–2004 | 3.5L)
  • McLaren: M838T / M840T (2011–Present | 3.8L, 4.0L)

The Rover V8 is definitely the most famous, but I think the Daimler is interesting. Had BL acquired Jaguar earlier i wonder if BL might have put the Daimler V8 into its Rovers and maybe Triumphs.

Why wasn’t the 2000 more popular in the US?

Why wasn’t the Triumph 2000 more popular in the USA? With thousands of TRs and Spitfires sold to US drivers, the brand was popular enough.

British jets to Korean War

Aside from the RAAF Gloster Meteor Mk.8, Britain’s jet fighters were not used or arrived too late to serve in the Korean War. Besides the Meteor, the RAF in 1950-53 had the DeHavilland Vampire and Venom (1952), and the FAA the Supermarine Attacker. Hawker’s Sea Hawk and Hunter entered service in 1953 and 1954. Same as the Supermarine Swift and de Havilland Sea Venom (both 1954). Would any of the early jets have been useful in Korea? What about the late arrival Hunter and Sea Hawk? Can these two mix it up with the MiG-15?

It does seem insane that a medium power like Britain was making so many parallel jet fighters across so many firms, when in France everything was Dassault (Ouragan, Mystère and Mirage). Britain should have told Vickers-Supermarine to focus on bombers, and focused all government funds and attention onto fighters from Hawker-Siddeley (owners of Gloster) and DeHavilland.

Retiring with unemployed adult children in the house?

I‘m 55M. Wife is 53. She retires in June 2027 when she’s 55. Our daughters are both 23. One has fully graduated but struggling to find a job. The other will do doing her masters degree until 2028. I’d like to be able to retire at 58 in 2029. But I’m concerned about kids in the house.

Was there any CATOBAR alternative to the A-4 Skyhawk as a replacement to HMCS Bonaventure’s McDonnell F2H Banshee?

If Canada had wanted to keep CATOBAR (catapult takeoff, arrested landing) fighters on HMCS Bonaventure into the 1970s, what were possible replacements for the McDonnell F2H Banshee beyond the A-4 Skyhawk?

How Reddit lets you post and then deletes your post

I’m relatively new to Reddit, so learning the ropes. But one feature they definitely need to add is to prevent posts that will deleted. If a subreddit needs a certain karma count or requires that an account be active for a certain period, how about preventing the Redditer from posting rather than allowing it, only to delete it seconds later? This could be done by disabling the “post” button for any accounts that are not yet valid. I know it’s on me to learn the ways of Reddit, but it grinds my gears when I write something I’ve thought through and considered, only to have it wiped out.

Why 2013-16 Verano Turbo and 2012-2017 Regal GS?

The Verano Turbo and Regal GS both had the same 2L turbo engines, with about equal performance, horsepower and dimensions. It‘s as if both Buick performance models were aimed at the same customer. Why didn’t Buick just make one or the other?

Why did Triumph make so many overlapping models?

Triumph had a confusing web of models all chasing the small saloon market, with the old RWD Herald, modern FWD 1300/1500, cheap RWD Toledo, and premium RWD Dolomite. The latter competed with the Triumph 2000/2500 for those who wanted a fast executive saloon. Then you have the TR4/TR6 and Spitfire offering two competing open top sports cars, until the third option the Triumph Stag entered the scene. The GT6 further muddied the waters by offering TR performance in a closed Spitfire body.

It just seems to me that a smarter rationalized product program would have been: Herald replaced (rather than produced concurrently) by FWD 1300/1500, either one of TR4/6 and Spitfire (not both), no Toledo or Dolomite with customers instead sent to 1300/1500 and top of range 2000/2500 (including estate). Lastly, the Stag is not launched until its V8 is reliable or replaced by the Rover unit.

There. Four Triumph cars for the late 1960s and through the 1970s: 1300/1500, TR, 2000/2500, and Stag.

With the end of ID.4 production in US would you still recommend one?

Canadian here, so our market is a little different, but with the discontinuation of the ID.4 in the US market, would you still recommend one?

Any manual LW200 wagons?

Im glad I found this sub. I had a 2000 SL2 and loved that car, until it rusted out underneath. You don’t think of rust on a Saturn, but it’s there, especially here in salty Canada.

I‘ve always liked the look of the last gen L-Series with the taller grill. Did they ever make 5-speed manual models of the LW200? I was thinking that would be a great start for a turbo wagon.

Rear luggage rack recommendations?

Hello all. I’m loving my 2024 Interceptor, having just completed its 5k Km service. I‘d like to add a rear luggage rack, but I am reluctant to get one that installs to only the four grab rail bolts. I see that TEC makes one that also attaches to the suspension bolts, but the vertical railing behind the seat is ugly.

TD Authenticator App, but no way to disable text 2FA?

I do not like relying on 2FA texts for secure log ins to my banking app or website, due to risk of phone theft or SIM hacking. So, I was pleased when TD introduced their authenticator app that requires a finger print scan. But there seems to be no way to disable the 2FA text option? When I now log into TD EasyWeb on my pc or phone, the pop up now offers both options for authentication, text or authenticator app.

If I have the app I obviously don’t want the text option. I called the bank and asked how to delete the text option, and they said it’s not possible, so instead I could edit my account so that the phone number is my landline (that cannot accept texts). But this is dumb, and instead on my account there should be an option to authenticate only on the app.

Factory touring screen

Just wanted to post that I’ve add the RE factory screen and I’m really liking it. I can ride over 120 kph without any issues. The hole in the screen helps to reduce front end lift. And the price was very good too.
