In modern society, can I exist without a phone?

I've been trying to curb my social media and it keeps dragging me back down. I delete and restart accounts every few months just to disrupt the algorithms.

I'm strongly considering a dumb phone, just for calling and texting etc. Then I started thinking, at that point do I even NEED a phone at all?

I'm old school GenX. I didn't get a cell phone until my late 30s. I don't talk to people on the phone unless I absolutely have to. I text my wife, she'd be annoyed if I cut that line of communication, but I could get a couple meshtastic devices and text back and forth with just her.

What would be the consequences of not having a phone/phone number today?

Is there a way to make Basic Cut the default instead of Print then Cut?

I’m in the learning curve of my first Cricut. An explore 5 that I got for my birthday.

I’m sure I’ll try a print then cut eventually. Until then I keep getting to the Make screens and have to cancel out to go back and change it back to just a Basic cut.

Please and thanks for any advice.

I just found this Star Wars concept art and I’m thinking someone copied their homework.

I mean, I can see how this evolved into a Jawa sand crawler. But along that evolution, someone saw this and created a Hiss tank.

What’s a modern version of “Monkey see, Monkey do” that won’t have people clutching pearls?

I just used the saying in another post and as soon as I hit post, I realized someone was going to be offended even though race had absolutely nothing to do with the post. Is there a different way of saying that people are generally dumb and if they see someone else jumping off a bridge, they’re likely to do the same?

For all the posts about living wages, how would that work?

Serious question.

Who gets to decide what constitutes a living wage and how would that be enforced. Given the difficulty (near impossibility) in just getting a minimum wage that keeps up with the cost of living.

I see plenty of comments about a living wage being fair, being reasonable, being logical. And I agree that it is, but in the U.S. it's like saying that everyone should get housing, education, and healthcare. It's a lovely idea, but realistically I don't see it happening in any of our lifetimes.

Statue on my neighbor’s stoop—what is it??

This small statue sits at the base of our neighbor’s front porch stairs (relatively regular stoop, for size reference) and it is….confusing? Seems to be a distressed baby head on some kind of animal body. It’s always entertained us since we first noticed it, but I’m wondering if this is some known creature/character/symbol that I’m just not aware of.

So Reddit, is this just a random silly thing or is there actual meaning to it? What IS it??

Netflix is grabbing more of your information.

So I go to access Netflix after work, my wife is the account holder, I have a profile.

Only now, if I want to access the profile that I've been using for years, I need to create my own login and give them my email. No option to bypass.

Why? Profiles have worked fine for ages, why do I need to login separately? Why do I need to create yet another account to attach to my email?

I am sick and tired of being the product for these people.

Did anyone ever find Revys headphones?

I saw a thread from about a year ago that said maybe just drawn for the show, or very loosely based on a pair of military Comms headgear.

Just seeing if anyone has newer ideas or info?

If Congress won't even defend themselves, do you think they'd defend us?

So, we've heard about the 1.8B slush fund, yes? They're advertising it as payback for political persecution. It's flat out illegal and unconstitutional. Neither the Justice Dept nor the Executive Branch have the constitutional authority to bypass the budget, as voted on by Congress.

So, now they talk about giving this money to the January 6th criminals, who were legally prosecuted, tried, and convicted, then pardoned by Trump.

The January 6th mob that literally broke in and caused Congress to be evacuated for their own safety. Seven people have died as a direct result of that day.

So, Trump is going to steal money from the citizen taxpayers and pay the criminals that attacked and threatened the physical safety of Congress. What is Congress doing about it? Nothing, really. They're discussing options. They're probably going to write a strongly worded bill that goes nowhere and the President will condemn and/or just ignore.

If Congress isn't willing to defend themselves, what hope do the rest of us have?

I'm utterly completely serious. If Congress isn't willing to stand up to the orange faced bully when it comes to paying almost two Billion dollars to the mob that was howling for their blood, does anyone have any faith left that they're going to defend us? The people that voted them into Congress to act on our behalf?

This government has failed and we all get the distinct historic privilege of watching the collapse.

If I decline a phone call, I don't want your voicemail either.

If I don't answer my phone, and I won't, leave a message.

But if I actually look at who is calling and select 'decline' why are they still allowed to leave a message? I'm absolutely uninterested in whatever they have to say.

Looking to build a cyberjournal, these are my options.

I have ADHD and a credit card, don't judge me.

I have a bunch of components, small monitors, cables, peripherals etc. When I've started this project in the past, I wound up with three possibilities for a main pc to build around.

Nvidia Jetson Orin. Not sure why I got this, it isn't aimed at this type of build but would likely work just fine, couple years old now.

Linux Hackboard 2. Most likely candidate as I've worked with Linux on and off for a couple decades and can usually figure out what I need to.

Raspberry pi CM4 with a Piunora I/O board. Solid option, could upgrade the compute module if I feel like dropping more money for some reason. Plenty of Pi based decks, so very easy to find answers or resources.

What does Reddit think? Anything specific for or against any of these boards?

Seriously getting sick of AI trying to be helpful

I just tried posting in r/helpmefind. If a human had read the post it would have been fine.

But no, a bot has to flag my post. I am trying to track down a CD I had about three decades ago. What policy did I dare violate by looking for a CD? Well, AI apparently thinks my post would be better suited in a sub Reddit about help me find paintings.

I know what happened already, I tried describing the colour of the case artwork. Apparently mentioning colour theory and artwork obviously means I can only possibly be looking for a painting and I obviously don't have a clue how to internet properly, my post has been removed for my convenience.

Screw off, AI. I've been doing this a lot longer than you!

I don't recognise the one after the clone assassin. Kind of a mask or headdress thing. The front mask is sort of cross shaped with a big round bit behind the head.
