I think pacing progress is clearly good. The risks of going full throttle are unacceptable, safety has to be paramount, and AI development needs to be carefully done. I think anyone who doesn't understand this is just stupid. The costs of slowing down is so little as compared to the possible disasters that could be avoided that it is a no-brainer.

Being that most people not named Hegseth understands this, the part that makes Amodei's asks questionable is how he spent the last year advocating for open-source bans and overt regulation. Doing so killed any sympathy he could've had from the broad community, so Jensen is rightly suspicious that this newest round of safety talk is really just a backdoor into an opensource ban. Safety minded people are castigating Jensen for his views, but they really need to understand the context in which we're operating here. Anthropic's actions are anti-competitive and monopolistic, and should not be tolerated. Perhaps with a more fair leadership in place we could've entered into a regulatory regime that would've satisfied everyone, but as it is, a ruleset written by Anthropic is a nonstarter.

Pushing back as hard as he did, Jensen navigated this adroitly imo. There are times to come out guns blazing, and times to be diplomatic, this was right play.

Pacing being a no-brainer, Ant and OAI simply will enter into probably a voluntary and friendly system to self-regulate without onerous legal prohibitions applied to the low end of the market, and that's probably as good of a solution as we can possibly expect.

Also some people in the market think that pacing means slowdown in compute needs... no that's not how it works. Safety testing means even more compute spend. Within the safety-focused labs, there is constant war between safety and product factions over GPU and compute. For the past while, product factions have been winning and safety factions have been starved of compute, which is why you've seen so many high profile defections and people publicly decrying labs aren't spending enough on safety. Increasing safety spend is necessary, and OAI is now doing things like caching the entire internet so that models can have a safe playground to mess around and security incidents like Huggingface and the german wiki thing can happen synthetically to a decoy (long $SNDK).
