Avoiding state tax

This probably gets ask a lot.

I’m approaching my FIRE date , and looking for ways to reduce tax . I’ll have good amount of income from deferred commissions.

Thinking of moving to a state with no income tax for a year, before going overseas for a few years.

I’m currently in Ca. If I move to Washington state, get my driving license, sign a 12 months lease and stay for 12 months, is that’s sufficient to clean break with Ca?

Battery coding

Just swap out the 12v battery with 60ah AGM battery from Costco. Process is seamless so far.

However my cheap OBD tool is not able to code the new battery. Old posts mentioned this topic and some think you don’t need coding but some say yes.

I rather error on the safe side and code the new battery. But how? Does anyone know which specific obd tool works for 2019 egolf?

Hate paying an arm and leg for dealer to do a 1min job.

Anyone in Bay Area / South Bay specifically have the tool that works? I can buy you a six pack in return? 😅

I might be joining the club

Both 50, have a kid going to college next year. 529 is fully funded.

Current expense is 2.2% (liquid ) net worth. We are golden. Room to increase expense . Once wife pension and my SS kicks in later years , the draw will be naturally lower.

I was planning to stay to 55 . Wife is retiring in a year ( based on my encouragement). Now I might be joining the club sooner than expected . I can see the writing on the wall at work . I’m actually ok with it and happy someone made the call for me.

Virtual toast to the folks here. Will be joining the gang soon!

Personal statement ideas

Kiddo started working on the personal statements. Basically he has been staring at an empty paper for a few days. his college counselor trying to help, sharing some examples, etc.

Unfortunately or fortunately his life is too boring, no big struggle or challenges. No sob stories.

Wife and I tries to brainstorm ideas with him. He is a shy kid but loves to socialize. We thought he can write about it how he learn to thrive even as a naturally shy and introvert person. He has grown a lot and although not a social butterfly but has been very successful overcome the challenges ( internships , summer program, teaching assistance , etc)

Well his college counselor veto the idea. Say it’s not strong enough.

Hmmm.. how should I help this kid? 😂 my advise to him is continue to brainstorm for a month or so, if nothing comes to mind, work on the original topic.

Any suggestions for someone that has absolutely no idea what to write about?

Is this a bad topic ? Too generic?

Tide with oxi liquid

Reading up on this thread . Seems like majority of folks here like to add enzymes booster like febu , and citric acid rinse.

I tried citric acid rinse and like the results so far. Towels are more fluffy.

Pretty happy with just liquid tide. Cloths seem clean. Should I bother with febu or similar? Am I going to notice any difference?

Soapstone

What a pain to use. Tried it the first time yesterday. Start fire, Put the soapstone in and waited 1hour. Full basket of coal on the junior all fully lit and red hot. I didn’t have an infrared thermometer, so I assumed 1 hour is sufficient . Nope. Steak barely sizzle. What a waste of time.

Remove the stone, and grill beautifully as usual 2mins each side and I’m good.

Some put the soapstone in the oven at 400F for 30mins. That’s more work. Maybe I’ll try that.

Feel like I bought in to the hype. 😂

Edit: problem solved. I think it’s because I had the deflector at the bottom and the soapstone at where the grate supposed to go. I’ll either remove the deflector or just place the soapstone at the bottom .

Recommendation for safety

Looking to help my son to review and probably add a couple more safety.

His stats are decent / above average. 3.9/4.36 gpa Sat 1540 with 790 math.
EC - internship at local university, research/project in computer architecture with a professor ( all other peers are undergraduates), CMU computational bio program, TA at his high school.

Major : ECE/EE
Full pay

Possible Safety schools / low target

- RPI ( received RPI Medal)

I know some college above is higher than safely for out of state . We are from California

Any other recommendations?

Edit1:correct the typo on gpa

Edit2:

Interested in your M3 LR if you are going to trade in with Tesla

( let me know if this against the forum rule)

I’m in the market for a used M3 for the kid. Looking for 2022+ Long range , awd, rwd or performance . Not picky on color. Just need more range than the standard.

Ideally below 100k miles in California.

Good condition. Battery should be in good condition, or normal wear .

Willing to offer $1k above what Tesla offer .

DM if you are interested. I think this is a win-win.

Just a rant

Not asking for advise. If this is not the right forum, I’ll delete .

Kiddo is a rising senior. He was planning to take Chem honors in 10th grade, but I talked him out of it since he has 2 AP and 1 Honors. All good. Recently we realized most competitive college requires chemistry. We discussed this and I suggested 2 options- take an online course or take chem in senior year. He didn’t like the senior year chem option as all the peers will be 10th grader. So we signed up for an online asynchronous course in March so he gets a head start before summer. You just need to complete the course in 6months.

Fast forward to today, he got accepted to a 4 weeks summer program. Paid and all exited to go. Yay. Then last week, we heard back from a prof that offer to work on a project with him. I called it a project vs research because no high schooler with no background on the subject is realistically doing any meaningful research. We met this prof during a campus tour, and it’s really nice of him to offer this great opportunity. So he signed up. This prof is in the school he wants to ED to, so I hope this experience will be a plus . The prof went radio silence for a long while so we didn’t know it’s happening or not. We already applied for several summer program much earlier before we this opportunity comes along.

I think you can see where this is going. In addition , The summer program have homework before the program start. Complete a Phyton bootcamp. So that’s 20-30 ( maybe more) hours of work. He is really exited about the summer program. It’s a residential in far away state, no credit so no tests, half field work and half programming/algorithm.

Poor kid. I swear I didn’t push him to over commit. He is wrapping up the bootcamp, currently at 70-75% done on the chem class. Summer program start in 2 week. The chem class is getting intensive , getting difficult. He barely keeping up an A. 50-50% he might get a B. It’s good enough in my book. He didn’t have high school chem , this is college general chem . In hindsight, I should push him to do an intro class ( similar to HS level). I suspect some overconfidence comes to play here. He has done couple of college level stem courses and got As.

I wish I can help him. We have a family vacation planned at the end of this summer program before school starts. That’s it. The entire summer he has 2 weeks off. Of course he keeps reminding me he should have taken Chem in 10th grade! I bet I’ll hear it for a long time.

Then… he will probably need to start thinking about college apps essays.

Oh well, 6 more months. That’s what I keep reminding him. Don’t envy the high school kids nowadays. Back in the days… it’s not that complicated. 😅

Mine is the oem 2019 model 3 SR+. No problem with the wheel , some normal road rash . Looking for 18 for better range.

Local only. Shipping is not worth it.

Is auto temp controller worth it for Joe junior?

I have a hard time keeping it low like 225. Wonder the fan controller will fix this or it’s a waste of time.

Luggage tag scam

Just watch the news on luggage tags scam. Basically someone take your tags after you check in, and place the tag on a new bag with drugs etc.

Innocent folks get caught and jailed for some time due to this scam.

This is scary. I’m sure the possibility is low, but yet not much you can do.

The only recommendations i come across is to Use a temper evidence tape on the tags and take a photo when you check in.

Wonder if the community has any thoughts on this.

Wear and tear maintenance

M3 owner for 7 years. Thinking of giving the car to the kid and get myself an S, particularly looking at used 2023 hw4 S, ~50k miles.

Trying to read up on possible maintenance items. The air suspension is nice , but i heard it’s close to 10k to replace all the suspension parts.

It is common for the air suspension need replacement? If yes, what’s the typical age or miles?

Any other big ticket items besides the suspension? I know the obvious hv battery which I’m not too concerned .

Investment allocation in preparation for FIRE

All my liquid investment is in 80% SP500 and 20% QQQ. I’m 50 and the current plan is to pull the trigger at 55. Some cash ( enough for 2 years expense)

I am thinking putting new money in bonds or other less risky investment. If I touch the current investment, it will trigger taxes

What’s a good long term mix and how to get there given my current asset mix?

Salary in Malaysia

Just curious what is the normal range for fresh graduate engineering salary in Malaysia? Back in the 90s , It’s around 1800-2000 if I remember correctly? I have been noticing folks posting like $3000 or $4000 in Penang .

For context, say $1800 a month back then is not great but ok. A simple meal at hawker center cost less than $2. If fresh grad now making $3000, seems like the country is taken 1 step forward but 2 steps back. It’s not even keeping up with inflation.

I left in late 90s and visit occasionally. Hawker center can easily cost $8 -$10 ( a bowl of noodle + kopi) .

What am I missing? Or it’s really that bad?

What is considered rigorous

In respect to classes one take in high school. I’m a parent . Kiddo is junior this year. School has 25 or so AP. He took 2 (max allowed) in 11th, taking 4 this year and likely 5 in 12th. Some kids are taking total of 14-16APs.

His AP is very much all STEM . He didn’t Ike English and arts, so didn’t take those AP or honors version.

Is this considered rigorous?

How to meet ppl

Thinking about retirement in Taiwan, wife and I are early 50s.

I’m pretty social and can make friends with taxi drivers. Wife is a bit introvert and happy with a book at the corner. We both can speak OK Chinese.

I was wondering how easy it is to meet ppl in Taipei? Not into clubs, pubs etc but loves to eat, walking, traveling and just exploring.

2018 and plan to own it for another 6 years

Does it sound crazy? No major issue with the car besides wear items. I replaced the brakes and struts.

Other option is to sell it now and get a used but newer EV. I enjoy driving the golf. Range is not an issue as this is mainly a commute vehicle

Wonder if there is any residual value for a 12-13 years old egolf!! Will be low mileage though. I have 35k right now .

What’s a good area in Taipei

Thinking of relocating to Taipei with the gold card in a few years. We will be 55. Active. Not trying looking for the cheapest. Say usd 4k rent a month for fully furnished. Slightly higher is fine too if it’s justified

Looking to be near MRT, morning market, and walking/hiking access. And quiet would be good. We can speak OK Chinese.

Since I’m a few years away, this is purely for research.

Any recommendations?
