Welp, it's official!

I now spend more time trying to read the size markings on the side of a socket than actually using it. Also, when you're on the ground under a car, you can't always get your arm far enough away from your eyes to make it out.

In WWI, a Marine going by the name of Charles F. Hoffman was awarded two Medals of Honor (one Army, one Navy) for his actions at Belleau Wood.

Prior to WWI, he had been enlisted in the Army under the name Ernest A. Jansen (his real name). After the war, he changed his name back to Jansen and reinlisted. I have searched all over the internet looking for an answer as to why he had two names.

Any ideas?

I just rewatched *Conan the Barbarian (1982)* for the first time in many years.

Although it was really a movie about Kull the Conqueror, where the name Kull was replaced with the name Conan in the dozen or less places it's used, it really is one of the most perfect movies. Every scene, every shot, every line feels like it has real purpose. Nothing is wasted. It really is a modern masterpiece.

Edit: I know the image is from Destroyer. I couldn't find the one I wanted, and I haven't found a way to swap it out.

New Induction Experience

I just went through a section induction experience. I didn't hate it.

During the Saturday, there were some guided reflection questions which each person in the crew of new members each answer in turn and discuss with each other. I can see where a 12-14 year old would benefit from those vs the old day of silence. There are periods of silence during the day, but they feel purposeful instead of just a tough thing to do.

The actual ceremony was well done. I felt like the main takeaways from the ceremony was unchanged, and it's probably easier for the youth to understand than the old ceremony.

Another one of my favorites sadly left us

This was one of my favorite movies (and games!) as a kid. I've seen it 100s of times. Same day as Dolly. RIP, Tim. You were a treasure!

9 to 5

Just a few nights ago, the wife and kids and I watched 9 to 5. It was the first time the kids (grown and almost grown) have seen it. I was commenting that I wish Dolly had done more acting, because I loved her accent.

Today, she has passed away. Terribly sad.

Touch typing is such a weird adaptation.

Like the title says, it's very weird if you think about it.

I learned to type in middle school on an IBM Selectric II. I was far from the best or fastest typist. However, in my years of working (which includes a lot of computer work), I became reasonably proficient at it. The strange thing is how the mind works when using that skill. If someone asked me to put all the letters in order on a piece of paper, I would get some right (QWERTY, for example), but I would get a lot of them wrong. Symbols, too. However, when I type them, I know right where they are.

Another oddity is that my first career was as a CAD drafter on an old version of AutoCAD that used command line inputs instead of icon to click. So a LOT of my typing was just one or two words at a time, followed by mouse work. That led to a somewhat hybrid technique where I don't typically locate all my fingers on the correct keys. I generally touch the nibs on F and J, but the rest of my fingers kinda just "float" around somewhere. I often use totally "wrong" fingers on certain keys in certain words. I have a bad habit of "reaching across" the keyboard. However, I find the right key!

I'll never have the speed or accuracy of someone who does it the "right way," but it amazes me how the brain subconsciously processes what I'm doing. Just a werid thought . . . that is all. Carry on.

If you were to learn that intelligent life existed on a distant Earth-like planet, would you expect the inhabitants to look like humans? Would you expect they have a belief system very similar to ours?

Bonus question: How would your views change (if at all) if they weren't the same as humans? As a Christian, I ponder things like this.

Mansplain shame

I tried to get this post started for about an hour, but I struggled with the title and the flair.

I titled it how I did, and here is why. I find myself not adequately explaining things to women, because I'm afraid of being accused of mansplaining. However, I have an almost compulsive need to be exactly, technically, correct about a subject. If something isn't right, I want to buy in with "Well, actually . . ." But I don't.

It frustrates me sometimes. Fortunately, my wife is very patient with me.

I just had to voice this That is all.

Double consonants

This was literally a shower thought just moments ago. If one who stops is a stopper, someone who robs is a robber, someone who plans is a planner, etc, why is someone who shows not a showwer? Instead we spell it shower, which is where I had this thought.

80s movies parents

Has anyone ever noticed that 80s movie parents were super old when you first watched the movie?

I watched Better Off Dead today, and the dad was younger, then, than I am now. Doh.

The orange on snuck in!

The orange one is from a litter of 5 orange cats (orange mom and dad) but is trying to butt in on this other pack of babies.

Hideout

Found 5 hiding under grill on porch. 2 tuxedos, 2 calico, one tabby. Kinda hissy, but after offering wet food, they warmed up and I held all but 1.
