"The Naval Battle of Lepanto of 1571" by Filipino Painter, Juan Luna (1887).

Description (trans. to Eng from Sp):

The canvas depicts the Battle of Lepanto, which was fought on October 7, 1571, in the Gulf of Lepanto, off the coast of the city of Naupactus (or Lepanto—a name derived from Italian and subsequently adopted into Spanish), situated between the Peloponnese and Epirus in mainland Greece. The battle pitted the Ottoman Turks against a Christian coalition known as the Holy League, comprising the Kingdom of Spain, the Papal States, the Republic of Venice, the Order of Malta, the Republic of Genoa, and the Duchy of Savoy. The Christians emerged victorious, with only 30 Turkish galleys surviving. Thus, Turkish expansionism across the western Mediterranean was halted. Miguel de Cervantes participated in this battle; he was wounded, suffering the loss of mobility in his left hand—an injury that earned him the nickname "the One-Handed Man of Lepanto." This writer, who took great pride in having fought there, described it as "the most memorable and lofty occasion that past centuries have ever witnessed, or that future centuries can ever hope to see."
