The specialist I was sent to rule out/rule in myalgic encephalomyelitis mispronounced it and giggled about it. I’m a physician who has railed against proper disease names that are not descriptive of the illness. In this particular case, I think the medical community has done a disservice to itself and to the general public. Myalgic encephalomyelitis is an entity marginalized by medical professionals and ancillary caregivers (!what’s a doable diagnostic/treatment algorithm! they reasonably complain). This term has further pushed it aside to all but researchers, and those who suffer from it (I put in that camp, committed caregivers). I propose a colloquial name that gets right to the point. Most ppl dismiss the symptoms of this illness with thoughts of how they personally have experienced fatigue before. However, they know nothing of “The Big Fatigue “. The reverse of climbing Mount Everest: few know of it and you can’t claim knowing of it til you’ve done it.

At last, the ways and means chair takes hospitals to task over facility fees. https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2026/04/28/congress/jason-smith-hospital-affordability-00896335

I’m a physician on disability and was hit with $365 facility fee to see a sleep MD in a clinic miles from the hospital. I loved this MD but switched to the next closest sleep MD on the preferred list in the NEXT state over.

Some background: NC was humiliated by the state of its WWII recruits disqualified based on poor healthcare due to poor access (a rate far worse than the next state at the bottom of the list). The governor at the dedication of the university of NC at Chapel Hill hospital put a plaque in the lobby saying: never again! We dedicate ourselves to the health of NC citizens. Now that hospital gouges disability/medicare patients with a per visit facility fee of hundreds of dollars. These exec’s are shameless.
