HORNS - I decided my first game would be massive and ambitious

There’s an unwritten rule in game development that your first game should be something small and simple, and for many very good reasons.

I decided to do the exact opposite.

After spending around seven months writing my book, **Horns**, I decided I wanted to turn that story into a game: a narrative-focused, cinematic RPG that carries the spirit of old-school RPGs while also embracing elements of modern ones.

I wanted to pour everything I had into one serious, large-scale open-world game, my imagination, around **35 years of gaming experience**, and **16 years of programming experience**.

At first, I also wanted to make absolutely everything by myself.

Eventually, I realized that if I wanted to maintain the level of quality I had in mind, I needed to bring a few talented people into the project. I'm simply not talented in every single field required to create a game of this scale.

I still kept the biggest part of the workload on myself: programming, animations, acting, body and facial performance, world design, gameplay, sound editing, cinematics, and many other parts of development.

But a few people have made significant contributions to areas such as voice acting, the game's soundtrack, and some of its visual and graphical details.

I also didn't want **Horns** to feel like “just another RPG.”

The core of the game is still a dark epic fantasy RPG, but I've mixed in elements inspired by several genres and games I grew up loving.

There are recognizable influences from **Souls-like games**, action games such as **Max Payne 1** and **Death Stranding**, and horror classics such as **Resident Evil 1** and **Silent Hill 1,** while keeping RPG systems, exploration, narrative, and character progression at the heart of the experience.

After almost **two full years of development**, Horns now has a playable demo on Steam.

The demo itself went through many different iterations before reaching the version I'm finally comfortable calling properly polished.

My goal now is to maintain that level of quality throughout the full game: a world that feels rich rather than empty, an engaging story, meaningful exploration, and around **25–30 hours of quality gameplay**.

I'm also trying to keep the final price very accessible, somewhere around **$10–15**.

For a project like this, every comment, piece of feedback, and bit of support genuinely helps, and wishlists are especially important for the game's visibility and future launch.

The demo is completely free, so if any of this sounds interesting to you, give it a try.

I hope you enjoy **Horns**.

And if you do, please consider wishlisting it on Steam.

My action RPG behind the scenes

Last week I shared gameplay trailer for my game and today I put together a short video showing how I am making my action RPG game, Horns.

Some interesting facts about the project: it is being developed entirely by me, and all of the footage was recorded using only two iPhones. The recording equipment was handmade and improvised specifically for this purpose.

A few days ago, a friend of mine composed the main song for the game, which you can hear in the background of the video, while another musician created a full ambient soundtrack.

Some of the artwork in Horns is also handmade. For example, the in game map started as an acrylic painting on canvas.

I hope you enjoy the video. If you would like to check out Horns, it is available on Steam.

Thank you for watching!

Horns - a solo dev RPG

Horns is an RPG solo project, my personal passion, and my desire to create a serious solo indie game that will be noticed and, above all, played. Although at first glance it looks like a Soulslike game with elements of a classic RPG, Horns is not a Soulslike, and it is very different from traditional RPG games.

The game was created as a combination of older popular titles from the late 90s and early 2000s, so you can feel the influence of hits such as Resident Evil 1, Max Payne 1, Morrowind, and God of War, but also the influence of titles like Lords of the Fallen, Death Stranding, and Elden Ring. The gameplay is a combination of old style and modern gameplay, and the mechanics inspired by existing games have been taken to a slightly higher level.

Horns is strongly connected to and focused on its story, as well as the way that story will be presented to players. Although combat is one of the main elements, the focus is on exploration, learning, and finding your way through the magical world of Velharion.

The focus of the game is on following signs in the world, exploring every corner, listening to the main heroine’s monologues and memories, but also following conversations with NPCs and bosses. These will reveal parts of the story to the players, while also showing them the right direction for further progression.

Although the base of the game is open world, in Horns there is no wrong path, so you will not get lost. It is up to the players to choose which path they will take and how they will explore the realm.

Since the game’s mechanics are a combination of well known and innovative systems, it is strongly recommended not to turn off the in game tutorial and to follow it carefully. It will make the experience much easier for players, explain how to use weapons and magic, and introduce the main gameplay mechanics.

Horns starts slowly, but as players progress, they will unlock new possibilities, powers, and strange events in Velharion.

A 3 hour long demo is available on Steam, and the final game is expected this October.

I need help setting the price for my game

I need help selecting a good price that feels fair both to me as a developer and to potential players/buyers. I already have a price in mind, but I am an unknown developer, a true “one-man band” behind this game, so I want the pricing to feel reasonable from both perspectives.

My game, Horns, is a solo project. By release, it will have a bit more than 2 years of development time behind it (1 year and 2 months so far).

The demo already offers around 3 hours of gameplay, and the full game is planned to have about 30 hours of content.

It is a linear game that gives the feeling of an open world. The map is quite large, there are usually multiple paths in front of the player, and there is no “wrong” direction to take.

Short description of the game:

  • Dark fantasy RPG with a strong atmospheric world
  • Heavy focus on storytelling and delivering the narrative through gameplay
  • Realistic graphics with many animation sequences
  • Third-person perspective
  • A combination of old-school game design and modern mechanics
  • Inspired by Morrowind, The Witcher, Max Payne, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill, all wrapped in a dark fantasy setting
  • Mechanics inspired by popular titles, but expanded and pushed further in some ways

A huge amount of effort and work has gone into making the game feel comparable in quality to well-known titles while still remaining unique. To me, it feels like a very unusual and distinctive RPG experience (but this could be subjective).

Optimization is not perfect yet, but the game has already been tested and runs on a GTX 1060 from 2016. By release, optimization should be significantly improved.

I noticed that many indie studios and solo developers would probably price a game like this between $30–50 considering the scope and length.

Personally, I was thinking about pricing it around $12–15. I feel that would be fair for potential buyers, and for me it could still pay off if the game sells well.

I would appreciate your honest opinion on the description and pricing, and of course you can also check the game on Steam.

Horns – An Unusual RPG by a Solo Developer

After approximately 1 year and 2 months of development, I can finally wrap up the demo for my game, Horns. I believe the demo clearly shows what this game is becoming and what it’s truly about.

Horns is an unusual RPG that combines classic old-school gameplay mechanics with modern design. Players will feel the influence of legendary titles from the late ’90s and early 2000s such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Morrowind, and Max Payne. At the same time, those ideas are expanded and merged into a dark fantasy experience inspired by games like The Witcher, Dark Souls, and Elden Ring.

The game is heavily focused on narrative and exploration, with the goal of uncovering the mysteries of the realm of Velharion and the story behind its main protagonist.

It is also important to mention that there is currently no studio behind this project. Horns is a solo-developed game, my personal vision of an RPG and a strong desire to create serious, meaningful games based on my own stories.

I also want to give special thanks to several talented friends who contributed in key areas such as voice acting, face models, original soundtrack composition, and programming support. I truly hope this project succeeds so that one day we can build a real studio together and turn all this talent into a professional game development team.

The 2+ hour demo is now available on Steam.

Full release planned for Q3 2026.

After weeks of polishing Horns based on players' comments and feedbacks, I believe the demo is now in a strong state and provides a solid foundation for a future development.

If you haven’t tried Horns yet, you can download the free demo on Steam. If you already have it, make sure you’ve installed the latest update.

This is a major update featuring bug fixes, new features, animations, and characters.

Horns started as a solo passion project, but after seven months, a few talented collaborators joined to contribute in specific areas.

Special thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge and creativity:

  • Nenad Radovic, voice acting (Buried Alive King boss)
  • Radoš Kostic, face model (Bren the blacksmith)
  • Milan Petkovic, full game soundtrack
  • Ana Borovicanin, face model (main character)
  • Vladimir Zdravkovic, C++ development
